''My Mama Wrote It!''

release date: Oct 23, 2008
''My Mama Wrote It!''
Growing up in Hugo, Oklahoma, a small rural community in southeast Oklahoma, there was always a Sunday program or some kind of event going on at the church; anniversaries, special days, revivals, musicals, funerals, etc. In the Afro-American community, we looked forward to having dinner on the grounds, and often staying at church all day. Anytime there were programs and special occasions that were occurring, a welcome had to be said to welcome visitors and guests, or if invited to other churches, a response had to be given in thanks of their invitation. My Mama, wrote numerous addresses for these special days. She was an outstanding writer, orator, missionary, fourth grade school teacher, and the best of moms. This book was written to show off my mothers writing abilities, and more so to give others the opportunity to see how these presentations should be written for their upcoming times of needs. For all readers of this book, May God bless you.

Understanding the Bible

Understanding the Bible
In 1854, Victorian miners fought a deadly battle under the flag of the Southern Cross at the Eureka Stockade. Though brief and doomed to fail, the battle is legend in both our history and in the Australian mind. Henry Lawson wrote poems about it, its symbolic flag is still raised, and even the nineteenth-century visitor Mark Twain called it "a strike for liberty".Was this rebellion a fledgling nation''s first attempt to assert its independence under colonial rule? Or was it merely rabblerousing by unruly miners determined not to pay their taxes? In his inimitable style, Peter FitzSimons gets into the hearts and minds of those on the battlefield, and those behind the scenes, bringing to life Australian legends on both sides of the rebellion.

Kids Don't Want to Fail

release date: Jun 13, 2011
Kids Don't Want to Fail
Understanding the causes of the racial achievement gap in American education—and then addressing it with effective programs—is one of the most urgent problems communities and educators face. For many years, the most popular explanation for the achievement gap has been the “oppositional culture theory”: the idea that black students underperform in secondary schools because of a group culture that devalues learning and sees academic effort as “acting white.” Despite lack of evidence for this belief, classroom teachers accept it, with predictable self-fulfilling results. In a careful quantitative assessment of the oppositional culture hypothesis, Angel L. Harris tested its empirical implications systematically and broadened his analysis to include data from British schools. From every conceivable angle of examination, the oppositional culture theory fell flat. Despite achieving less in school, black students value schooling more than their white counterparts do. Black kids perform badly in high school not because they don’t want to succeed but because they enter without the necessary skills. Harris finds that the achievement gap starts to open up in preadolescence—when cumulating socioeconomic and health disadvantages inhibit skills development and when students start to feel the impact of lowered teacher expectations. Kids Don’t Want to Fail is must reading for teachers, academics, policy makers, and anyone interested in understanding the intersection of race and education.

Counting Our Losses

Counting Our Losses
This text is a valuable resource for clinicians who work with clients dealing with non-death, nonfinite, and ambiguous losses in their lives. It explores adjustment to change, transition, and loss from the perspective of the latest thinking in bereavement theory and research. The specific and unique aspects of different types of loss are discussed, such as infertility, aging, chronic illnesses and degenerative conditions, divorce and separation, immigration, adoption, loss of beliefs, and loss of employment. Harris and the contributing authors consider these from an experiential perspective, rather than a developmental one, in order to focus on the key elements of each loss as it may be experienced at any point in the lifespan. Concepts related to adaptation and coping with loss, such as resilience, hardiness, meaning making and the assumptive world, transcendence, and post traumatic growth are considered as part of the integration of loss into everyday life experience.

Harlem’s Hell Fighters

release date: Jun 30, 2003
Harlem’s Hell Fighters
When the United States entered World War I in 1917, thousands of African-American men volunteered to fight for a country that granted them only limited civil rights. Many from New York City joined the 15th N.Y. Infantry, a National Guard regiment later designated the 369th U.S. Infantry. Led by mostly inexperienced white and black officers, these men not only received little instruction at their training camp in South Carolina but were frequent victims of racial harassment from both civilians and their white comrades. Once in France, they initially served as laborers, all while chafing to prove their worth as American soldiers. Then they got their chance. The 369th became one of the few U.S. units that American commanding general John J. Pershing agreed to let serve under French command. Donning French uniforms and taking up French rifles, the men of the 369th fought valiantly alongside French Moroccans and held one of the widest sectors on the Western Front. The entire regiment was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the French government s highest military honor. Stephen L. Harris s accounts of the valor of a number of individual soldiers make for exciting reading, especially that of Henry Johnson, who defended himself against an entire German squad with a large knife. After reading this book, you will know why the Germans feared the black men of the 369th and why the French called them hell fighters. "

Life Notes provides a simple yet powerful set of stories grounded in scripture and in faith that walks though the author''s faith journey. Stories of perseverance, stories of love, stories of hurt and sorrows. Life Notes affirms the many people who touched Bennie''s life and gave him the strength to perservere. Life Notes is intended to encourage you to pause and take notes along the way. Don''t miss the daily affirmations given to you by a moment at church; or in a song; or at work; or with your childen, spouse, or partner. Bennie recalls reflecting on the maturing of his youngest son going to college. Shortly after that reflection, he found himself writing little thoughts and notes. It may have been a conversation with my dad, or my brother, or something I heard from my minister. He began sharing those with his wife and children, then with his siblings. The reflections were encouraging and motivating. He later learned that a couple of his sisters were printing them out and then later became a form of encouagement, which is the impetus for this book, Life Notes.

Key Strategies to Improve Schools

Key Strategies to Improve Schools
School improvement initiatives are often the focus of political agendas, professional conferences, and publications. While a plethora of school improvement resources and techniques exist, most explanations for employing school improvement strategies in differing contexts are extremely vague at best and non-existent at worst. Here, author Edward Harris explains and illustrates strategic, practical approaches for adapting and applying research-based school improvement strategies. While consideration is given to the principal''s role in the school, the notion of school leadership is viewed in broader terms and includes teacher roles as well. The interrelationship of organizational culture and school leadership is also a key component of this book. One of the goals is to bridge the gap between the "theory" and "practice" of school leadership. Harris provides an explanation of Mary Douglas''s typology of grid and group, substantive analytical tools and procedures to examine one''s social context and assess school culture, and practical examples and suggestions for contextualizing and adapting school improvement strategies. This book features in-depth, practical applications and explanations of the following school improvement strategies: ·Increasing student engagement and motivation ·Providing focused, sustained professional development ·Implementing organizational and management practices ·Building links ·Monitoring and accelerating improvement This book is useful for teachers, administrators, and anyone involved in teacher leadership preparation programs.
