Healthy Smile, Healthier Life
What are the signs that dentists can see that signal a larger health concern? If you have family history of heart disease or stroke; if you have -- or are at risk for -- diabetes; even if you are considered a "healthy" person, Healthy Smile, Healthier Life has information that can help you live a healthier, happier... and longer life.As a dentist, the mouth is the obvious starting place for Dr. Norige''s quest for better patient health. In Healthy Smile, Healthier Life, Dr. Norige explains -- in plain English -- the red flags in your mouth that signal unnecessary stress is being placed on your heart, and other warning signs he can see that affect more than your mouth. Why is a dentist concerned with recognizing these signs? The mouth is part of the whole body system, which means that any change in the mouth can have a ripple effect throughout the body. Dr. Norige''s philosophy of complete health dentistry guides him to find ways to positively change your oral health and therefore your overall health.Take your first step towards a better understanding of the connection between your oral health and overall health with Healthy Smile, Healthier Life.

Slaughter of the Dissidents Volume I (3rd Edition)
This is volume I of a trilogy and is the seminal work documenting the widespread discrimination and censorship of Darwin Dissidents. Case studies in this volume document how individuals in academia and scientific disciplines are denied freedom of speech and continued access to their spheres of influence. In many instances dissidents are punished due to their religious beliefs with assertions that religious beliefs invalidate one''s ability to practice or teach good science.

New Jersey Attorney Ethics

New Jersey Attorney Ethics
The first definitive treatise in an ever-expanding area, New Jersey Attorney Ethics: The Law of New Jersey Lawyering collects, organizes and analyzes the New Jersey Rules of Professional Conduct, court rules, decisions of the New Jersey Supreme Court, the Superior Court, and District of New Jersey, opinions of the Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics, the Advertising and Unauthorized Practice Committees, and statutory authority governing attorney conduct in New Jersey. A dog-eared copy of this treatise should be on every New Jersey attorney’s desk. The treatise has been cited in opinions of the New Jersey Supreme Court, the Appellate Division, the Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics and the Disciplinary Review Board. New Jersey attorneys are governed by some of the strictest and most complex ethical principles in the nation. The New Jersey Rules of Professional Conduct varied significantly from those proposed by the ABA when they were first adopted by the New Jersey Supreme Court in 1984. In 2004, the Court substantially revised those rules even further. This volume provides a comprehensive, systematic analysis of the maze of New Jersey authorities that regulate an attorney''s conduct, including the literally thousands of opinions interpreting and applying the current and predecessor rules. Extensive discussions of:The N.J. Supreme Court''s authority over the profession. The limits of court authority and the roles of the other government branches.Organization of a law practice, including entity selection, firm names and letterhead.Advertising, marketing and solicitation. The legal fee agreement, including retainers and contingent fees.Fee sharingFee collection, including attorney liens, and fee arbitrationAttorney trust accountingDuties in representing a client, both in the transactional and litigation settingConflicts of interest, including imputed disqualification, screening, conflicts relating to concurrent clients, former clients, public representations, family relationships, the attorney’s own interests, and business transactions with a client.Client waivers of conflictsClient confidentialityDisclosure of client information to the courts and adversariesEx parte communicationDetailed analysis of New Jersey''s attorney discipline system, both procedurally and substantively.Immunity and confidentiality in the disciplinary system

Made in America?

Made in America?
For two decades, the consensus explanation of the British Industrial Revolution has placed technological change and the supply side at center stage, affording little or no role for demand or overseas trade. Recently, alternative explanations have placed an emphasis on the importance of trade with New World colonies, and the expanded supply of raw cotton it provided. We test both hypotheses using calibrated general equilibrium models of the British economy and the rest of the world for 1760 and 1850. Neither claim is supported. Trade was vital for the progress of the industrial revolution; but it was trade with the rest of the world, not the American colonies, that allowed Britain to export its rapidly expanding textile output and achieve growth through extreme specialization in response to shifting comparative advantage.

Identity Theft

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Identity Theft
The loss of private customer data such as Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, birth-dates, and other confidential information to unauthorized third parties presents a daunting set of challenges and legal obligations to affected businesses. Identity theft has been America''s “fastest growing crime” since at least 1989 and although actual cost data is difficult to gauge, various studies estimate that the U.S. business community suffers direct domestic losses of fifty-six to one-hundred billion dollars per year. These rather staggering figures do not include significant additional tangential costs such as the criminal prosecution and incarceration of offenders. Identity theft also directly costs private consumers over two billion dollars and one-hundred million hours of time per annum to resolve in the aftermath of having their identities stolen. The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse reports that over eight *50 million individuals were victims of identity theft in 2007 alone. That source also reports at least 900 business-related data breaches in the United States alone involving the compromise of over 245 million records containing personal information. Over the past two years, hackers, disaffected employees, and other cyber criminals have compromised data networks at TJ Maxx/Marshalls, Barnes & Noble, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Stanford University, Princeton University, The Veterans Administration, Fannie Mae, and the City of San Francisco. According to the Department of Justice, reports of data breaches increased even more dramatically in 2008 with 656 reported breaches, reflecting an increase of 47% over the preceding year''s total of 446. This includes a total of 35,691,255 stolen or otherwise compromised identities. According to that same study, only 2.4% of all breaches had encryption or other strong protection methods in use, and 8.5% of reported breaches had password protection. Considering the enormity of these incidents, there is no way to be certain “how many other retailers, who might not be quite as careful, are already being breached?” As dependence upon data access, especially wireless applications, continues to grow, new vulnerabilities will be further exploited. Obviously, given the current risk environment, businesses are obligated to do their utmost to protect systems and ensure customer confidentiality. Unfortunately, in this same threat environment, careful consideration must also be given to planning and preparation for worst case scenarios. In the event of a major system compromise, who bears the cost of system restoration or customer reimbursements? What about negative publicity, loss of goodwill, and lawsuits? What constitutes minimum due diligence before and after a data-compromise? What steps should management consider post-breech? What are the legal consequences to our business, customers and other stake-holders? Should we purchase cyber-insurance? Part one of this article addresses current infrastructure risks and the challenges associated with cyber insurance underwriting. Part two attempts to summarize what has become a rather complex legal and regulatory landscape. Part three addresses due diligence and post-breach best practices that may facilitate the retention of customer goodwill while minimizing business costs and legal liabilities.

Right-wing political extremism in the Great Depression

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Right-wing political extremism in the Great Depression
We examine the impact of the Great Depression on the share of votes for right-wing anti-system parties in elections in the 1920s and 1930s. We confirm the existence of a link between political extremism and economic hard times as captured by growth or contraction of the economy. What mattered was not simply growth at the time of the election but cumulative growth performance. But the effect of the Depression on support for right-wing anti-system parties was not equally powerful under all economic, political and social circumstances. It was greatest in countries with relatively short histories of democracy, with existing extremist parties, and with electoral systems that created low hurdles to parliamentary representation. Above all, it was greatest where depressed economic conditions were allowed to persist.
