This book contains several poems and some songs that I have written since I was in junior high. This book publication happened because my mentor, Rita Randecker truly believes that my poems and songs can help people who struggle with mental illness, and especially teens growing up through school that endure bullying, depression and anxiety. My ultimate dream for this book is to help others feel less alone and I plan to donate 40% of whatever profits to my home church, Ax Church in La Salle, IL for funds to not only keep the church alive to bring Jesus to where people are at, but also to support a wonderful event that the church has been having for the past several years called Hope Week. Hope Week was created to help our communities by giving our time and money to help restore public parks, schools, or other jobs that the state or cities are unable to provide funds for, and we also try to help families or local businesses in some ways that we are capable of such as renovations or simply donating a vehicle to a family in need of one. In the year 2020, due to the corona-virus, we decided to change things up a little because normally the church sets up projects for the volunteers, so this time the volunteers had to find a project to provide hope to someone or to somewhere. My project was to finish this book, get it published, donate as much as I can to help fund this amazing church and events they created, lastly like I said before, I hope my poems and songs helps my readers feel less alone and most importantly, to inspire hope in my readers hearts and their lives.

The inspiration for the documentary God & Country For readers of Democracy in Chains and Dark Money, a revelatory investigation of the Religious Right's rise to political power. For too long the Religious Right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. In her deeply reported investigation, Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: this is a political movement that seeks to gain power and to impose its vision on all of society. America's religious nationalists aren't just fighting a culture war, they are waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy. Stewart pulls back the curtain on the inner workings and leading personalities of a movement that has turned religion into a tool for domination. Social integration and acceptance of trans women as their self-identified gender has a considerable influence on their health, wellbeing and quality of life. Researchers have suggested that social integration for marginalised groups may be facilitated through sport participation. Given that trans women often experience stigma and social exclusion because of their gender expression, their experiences may differ from those of other marginalised groups. Trans women often have to deal with the common public perception that they have a physical advantage over cisgender women and should not be allowed to engage in sport as their identified gender. As a result of having a masculine voice, trans women experience activity limitations in speaking, communicating and participating in society because their birth-assigned sex is often exposed by their voice. Therefore, it is likely that voice may also be a barrier for trans women's acceptance by peers in sport settings because of the heavy communicative demands and high vocal load experienced in sport environments. The aim of this doctoral inquiry was to explore the experiences of trans women's participation in sport, as well as to understand their experiences and awareness of voice within sporting environments. Further, this thesis aimed to examine the development and implementation of national sporting organisation's (NSO's) policies and procedures for trans women's engagement in sport. An interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was used to develop a rich and detailed understanding of the participation of trans women in sport. Twenty women were ix interviewed about their lived experiences of engaging in sport and the importance of voice in sport settings. Nine NSOs and one trans and gender-diverse advocacy organisation were interviewed about their sporting policies and procedures relating to trans women's participation. This research has resulted in two published articles and two submitted manuscripts. The emerging data reflected the lived experiences of trans women engaging in sport. Three key stages were identified by the women as impacting on their experiences: sport pretransition, sport during transition and sport post-transition. The women highlighted that there were several barriers to their engagement in sport, with one of the most significant barriers being a lack of inclusive policies that supported their participation as their identified gender. Another barrier was that the women perceived that they were not permitted to play as their identified gender during transition. Further, the women were also questioned by the public and staff about their eligibility to play against cisgender women. Despite the potential barriers to sport participation, many of trans women continued to engage in sport because they wanted to maintain their health and remain socially connected. Most of the fully transitioned trans women reported that sport involvement improved their wellbeing, social relationships and sense of belonging. All 20 participants reported that their voices were critical to their engagement and acceptance by peers in sport settings. This research provided insights into NSO's satisfaction regarding their current policies and procedures that are relevant to trans women. Spokespeople from these NSO's explained that a lack of funding and resources meant that full attention to policy creation x for trans women had not been achievable. Through the development of policy, NSOs have a critical role in facilitating the participation of trans women. Trans women perceived sport to be an important aspect of their lives. The women shared that sport allowed them to remain socially connected and maintain their physical health during challenging periods. NSOs need to address the barriers experienced by trans women, such as confusing policies and the difficulty accessing trans-friendly environments to assist with their engagement in sport. This doctoral research provides personal accounts directly from trans women and NSO spokespeople to understand the experiences of trans women in sport.

Digital platforms and technologies have led to innovation in the way we trade: from early online mail order shops, to today's complex cryptocurrencies and digital assets. Understanding the economic, social and political implications of such change in the way we make transactions - and how these fit into the context of wider socioeconomic trends - are key areas of focus for policymakers who wish to address social challenges and also make the best use of such platforms for public benefit. This report captures discussions among participants and key themes that arose over a two-day Thought Leadership consultation held at St George's House, Windsor, in April 2017. It captures preliminary ideas about how digital technologies are changing the way we are able to transact and the implications of such changes on society, as well as providing recommendations for further research.

"Congenital birth defects affect approximately 1 in 20 live births, and are the leading cause of infant death in the Western world. Of these, genitourinary tract and craniofacial abnormalities constitute approximately 20% of the cases, both of which require surgical and/or pharmaceutical interventions to alleviate disease symptoms. Importantly, in many of these individuals the underlying molecular and morphological causes of the defect are unclear. The characterization of mouse models of congenital diseases contributes to morphological and molecular understanding of potentially pathogenic mutations in paediatric patients, detection of which often requires a priori knowledge. In this thesis I have developed three mouse models of urogenital system and craniofacial diseases, through the use of forward and reverse genetic methods. In the second chapter I have identified a point mutation in Arhgap35 (p190A RhoGAP) from a forward genetic screen for regulators of urogenital system development that results in kidney hypoplasia and glomerulocystic disease. The loss-of-function mutation in p190A RhoGAP deregulates RhoA and Rac1 signaling, likely by disrupting the Rho-binding surface. This results in defective primary cilia elongation during nephrogenesis, associated with proximal tubule and glomerular cyst formation. P190A RhoGAP localizes specifically to the cilia basal body to dampen Rho-family activity, and allow the dynamic actin cytoskeleton rearrangements necessary for cilia elongation. Together this reveals an unexpected link between regulation of Rho GTPase activity and ciliogenesis, thus highlighting novel regulators of glomerulocystic kidney disease.I continued my investigation into the molecular and morphogenic regulators of urogenital system disease by characterizing the role that regulated apoptosis of the common nephric duct plays in the appropriate connection of the ureter to the bladder. In so doing, I have demonstrated the first instance of regulation of the anti-apoptotic protein cIAP1, which is modulated by LAR-family receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase activity in the caudal common nephric duct. This regulation dictates the balance of cIAP1 substrates, such that loss of the LAR-family results in proportionally more cIAP1- caspase 3 interactions leading to reduced apoptosis and the development of vesicoureteral junction obstruction. Conversely, loss of cIAP1 activity during urogenital system development, either genetically or pharmacologically, results in an acceleration of common nephric duct elimination associated with elevated caspase 3 activity leading to laterally displaced ureter-bladder connections and vesicoureteral reflux. Importantly, both vesicoureteral reflux and junction obstruction are included in the congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) disease spectrum, which is the leading cause of early onset-chronic kidney disease. Finally, I have uncovered the concomitant modulation of canonical Wnt and BMP signaling pathways by the LAR-family receptor tyrosine phosphatases during craniofacial development. Loss of LAR-family activity results in upregulation of BMP signaling in the distal first branchial arch, while abrogating canonical Wnt signaling proximally. This initiates aberrant Meckel's cartilage and mandibular bone formation, foreshortens the lower jaw (micrognathia) and results in a mis-positioned tongue and cleft palate. Together this spectrum of defects is reminiscent of Pierre Robin Sequence, a disease for which upstream signaling regulators are completely unknown.Overall, this thesis attempts to elucidate both molecular and physical causes of common paediatric diseases through the detailed characterization of embryonic models. In so doing, I have highlighted several novel pathways and morphological mechanisms of cystic kidney disease, urinary tract disorders and craniofacial malformations that should be investigated for pathogenic relevance in human patients." --

Sense about Science and the Nuffield Foundation commissioned RAND Europe to provide an overview of emerging trends and social changes which may affect the way in which the British public understand and engage with the political process, policymaking, services and information sources, and the role of evidence and expert opinion within this. The report was intended to offer background context – and inspire further discussion and thinking – at a workshop on influencing the policymaking environment to support initiatives on the use of evidence, hosted by Sense about Science and the Nuffield Foundation. The report discusses key social, technological and political changes that may affect the policymaking environment in the years to come. These include: demographic change; economic uncertainty; the increasingly flexible, fragmented and plural nature of our shared and individual identities; the rise of social media and their impact on the traditional media; political pluralism; new avenues for state–public and public–public communication and political activism; and the spread of rumours and misinformation. The authors note that these trends are highly interconnected and the ways in which they interact are difficult both to disentangle and to predict. Long-term forecasts would therefore be tenuous, and, rather than venture firm conclusions or posit causal relationships between trends and specific outcomes, the authors seek instead to provoke reflection on the implications of this changing context for those seeking to centre the role of independent analysis and evidence in the policymaking process.

In 2009, the Good News Club came to the public elementary school where journalist Katherine Stewart sent her children. The Club, which is sponsored by the Child Evangelism Fellowship, bills itself as an after-school program of "Bible study." But Stewart soon discovered that the Club's real mission is to convert children to fundamentalist Christianity and encourage them to proselytize to their "unchurched" peers, all the while promoting the natural but false impression among the children that its activities are endorsed by the school. Astonished to discover that the U.S. Supreme Court has deemed this -- and other forms of religious activity in public schools -- legal, Stewart set off on an investigative journey to dozens of cities and towns across the nation to document the impact. In this book she demonstrates that there is more religion in America's public schools today than there has been for the past 100 years. The movement driving this agenda is stealthy. It is aggressive. It has our children in its sights. And its ultimate aim is to destroy the system of public education as we know it.

Atmospheric N₂-fixation by cyanobacteria is a key source of newly fixed N in nutrient-poor arctic ecosystems. To further determine the causes of N limitation and predict long-term responses to climate change the controls of biological N₂-fixation must be better understood. Using acetylene reduction assays we evaluated the spatial and temporal variation in N₂-fixation by associative cyanobacteria in various ecosystem types in both the low and high Canadian Arctic. The direct and indirect effects of soil moisture, plant community functional composition, and bryophyte and lichen abundance on rates of N₂-fixation were examined at sites varying in latitude and vegetation type. The linkages between N and C cycling processes in arctic systems were examined through paired measurements of N₂-fixation, inorganic soil N with surface greenhouse gas fluxes, including CO₂, N₂O and CH₄. Total growing season N₂-fixation input across a low arctic landscape was estimated at 0.68 kg ha⁻~yr⁻~, which is slightly less than twice the estimated average N input 0.39 kg ha⁻~yr⁻~ via precipitation. N₂-fixation by bryophyte-cyanobacterial associations appear to be very important across the Canadian Arctic. Increasing soil moisture was strongly associated with an increasing presence of bryophytes and increasing bryophyte abundance was a major factor determining higher N₂-fixation rates at all sites. Shrubs had a negative effect on bryophyte abundance; competition from vascular plants, potentially through shading, may negatively influence N₂-fixation. Soil N status was linked to rates or N₂-fixation in both the high and low Arctic indicating that these N₂-fixing associations act as important point sources of soil N. Higher rates of nitrification may be associated with warmer and drier vegetation types; however, increasing NO₃-N availability does not appear to increase rates of denitrification. Loss of N through denitrification was not a significant factor in the N cycle at the high arctic sites examined. We found many factors control both the spatial and temporal variability of N₂-fixation, including topography, microtopography, vegetation characteristics, microclimatic conditions, nifH abundance and availability of other nutrients, such as phosphorus. Moisture, however, appears to be a key factor not only in determining N₂-fixation but also by influencing related nutrient cycling processes.
