نحن...؟ نحن، بيل كلاتي وكيتي طومسون، أخ وأخت. لقد ترعرعنا في جنوب ولاية ويسكونسون مع أخّين آخرين ومجموعة كبيرة من أبناء الأعمام والعمات. كانت الحياة أحياناً رائعة وأحياناً لا. كانت الأوقات الرائعة تُخرق بالانتقال المتكرر والصراعات العائلية, ومن ثم خُرقت بوفاة والدنا ونحن في سن المراهقة. أثناء السنوات اللاحقة القليلة توفي أقاربنا البالغون الآخرون جميعهم تقريباً. ولكن عن طريق قيادة والدتنا -الزعيمة الكبرى في العائلة- تمكن أفراد عائلتنا (بالمفهوم الواسع) من الصمود معاً. استمرت دروب حياتنا بإدخالنا في علاقات مضطربة وتحديات شخصية أخرى. منحتنا تلك التجارب أيضاً بعض أجمل الهدايا، التي يمكن أن تهبها الحياة: النمو الشخصي والعلاقات العميقة والأبناء والأحفاد والعمل المُرضي. زاد عمق الرابط الأخوي بيننا -كوننا أخاً وأختاً- على مر السنوات، بالرغم من أننا أقمنا في بلاد مختلفة. بيل فتى مدينة، من رأسه إلى أخمص قدميه، لايزال يعيش في ضواحي مدينة ميلواكي في ولاية ويسكونسون، حيث ولدنا. كيتي لا تزال -كفأرة ريفية- جياشة العواطف، تعشق الحياة على جزيرة مانيتولين في شمال أونتاريو في كندا. اندمجت اختلافاتنا وتشابهاتنا مع بعضها على مر السنوات، لتجعلنا صديقين مقربين وزميلين في المهنة، يملكان المتعة الفريدة في كونهما أخوين أيضاً. ... ولماذا ألفنا هذا الكتاب؟ عالج بيل على مدى سنوات عديدة أشخاصاً كانوا يتعاملون مع أشخاص يحبونهم، يسببون المشكلات -أقارب أو أصدقاء مقربون استمروا بارتكاب الأخطاء المؤذية نفسها مرة بعد مرة. كثيراً ما كان يتمنى لو أنه يجد كتاباً يستطيع -هو وزملاؤه- أن يشاركوا عملاءهم قراءته. كان هدفه مساعدة عملائه على التعامل بطريقة أكثر فاعلية مع التحديات التي يقدمها لهم الشخص المضطرب، الذي يحبونه، مع الحفاظ -في غضون ذلك- على سلامتهم العقلية. أدرك بيل ذات يوم أنه إن أراد أن يوجد مثل هذا الكتاب, فعليه أن يكتبه بنفسه. بعد قليل من النظر والعمل الأولي باشر بالكتابة. وسرعان ما أدرك أنه بحاجة إلى شريك يثق به. كانت كيتي أول شخص يتبادر إلى ذهنه. كانت تملك خبرة كبيرة في استشارات البالغين وتعليمهم، ولطالما امتلكا فهماً مشتركاً للأشياء التي تثير الناس، وكيفية دعمهم. تعلمنا عبر مســيرتنا الشــخصية وعملنا مع الآخرين العديد من المفاهيم والمهارات، التي ساعدتنا على عيش حياة أكثر
