She is a five foot seven long list of things he can''t have. He is a determined cop, desperate to keep his heart sealed behind his badge. Michelle is a survivor. With a fresh perspective on life, she trades her tragic past in California for the coastal waters of Charleston. Rowdy is a newly minted sergeant dedicated to his job, but the life of a Charleston police officer has never been more dangerous. FROM 1 MOUNTAIN TO THE NEXT

release date: Feb 14, 2017
FROM 1 MOUNTAIN TO THE NEXT
In this true story of a series of obstacles, both physical and metaphorical, Kate prepares herself for a life''s work of summiting Everest. Born into a close-knit and happy family and raised in the Lake District, she struggled throughout school with dyspraxia: a lack of fine motor control, poor coordination, balance, and trouble staying organised. Kate, her brother and parents were then presented with the challenge of understanding their youngest family addition, a profoundly autistic girl named Martha. In this epic, Kate explores the social and material struggles of coping with bullying, heartbreak, finding employment following graduation, with a bereavement, and with struggling to accept herself. This is a narration of the consequences and the rewards of deciding to choose one''s own unconventional path in a world and a society that does not automatically welcome its fledglings. It is also a story of mud, sweat, tears, hills and miles. Kate vividly chronicles how striving to achieve through adventure can bring enlightenment, peace and a tremendous sense of freedom.

Interpersonal Effects of Belonging

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Interpersonal Effects of Belonging
Previous experiments demonstrate that college students benefit academically from learning that early challenges in college are common and impermanent, rather than diagnostic of a lack of belonging. The current project expanded this focus by examining interpersonal functioning -- namely, relationship goals and responsiveness -- as one mechanism underlying the academic benefits of social belonging. A large-scale experiment (N = 604) utilizing a social belonging intervention for first-year college students tested this possibility. The intervention increased two measures of course credits completed (but not GPA) among socially and economically disadvantaged students. Among participants who also completed the relationship questionnaires in the spring (N = 288), the belonging intervention increased responsiveness but did not affect compassionate or self-image goals with roommates. None of the relationship variables mediated the effects of the intervention on academic outcomes. Findings pertaining to relationship outcomes are discussed in light of missing data on the follow-up relationship measures. Results suggest that social belonging interventions may increase credit completion among students from marginalized backgrounds, and associations of compassionate and self-image goals with academic achievement depend, in part, on students'' cultural backgrounds. Limitations of this study and future directions are discussed.

The Fall

The Fall
Dallas He was the beginning of my heart . . . and the end of it. I was only fifteen years old when he claimed it and twenty when he took it with him. They say what is meant to be will find a way. But when you have changed to the point of no return, how can anything ever be the same? Seven years later, Dean Martin waltzed back into my life in hopes of resuming what I had fought so hard to forget, but he was in for a wake-up call. I was no longer the naïve woman he had left . . . and I was no longer his. I met the love of my life and my soul mate when I was fifteen. I knew that; he knew that. He wanted that girl back. I wanted to forget she ever existed. Dean What I thought was my pre-destined path was very much an illusion. Living seven years with regret, I realized too late that I was broken, and that I only had myself to blame. I thought love could wait . . . but it didn''t. We''d had it all those years ago, and then I foolishly left it behind. She was all that mattered. She was all there ever was. There was no life without Dallas, no reason . . . except her. No matter how hard she tried to convince me, I knew I had to once again make her mine, to make her remember . . . the fall. Mature audiences only. Explicit sex and language

Our Children and Other Animals

release date: Nov 28, 2014
Our Children and Other Animals
Focusing on the socialization of the human use of other animals as resources in contemporary Western society, this book explores the cultural reproduction of human-nonhuman animal relations in childhood. With close attention to the dominant practices through which children encounter animals and mainstream representations of animals in children''s culture - whether in terms of the selective exposure of children to animals as ‘pets’ or as food in the home or in school, or the representation of animals in mass media and social media - Our Children and Other Animals reveals the interconnectedness of studies of childhood, culture and human-animal relations. In doing so it establishes the importance of human-animal relations in sociology, by describing the sociological importance of animals in children''s lives and children in animals’ lives. Presenting a new typology of the various kinds of human-animal relationship, this conceptually innovative book constitutes a clear demonstration of the relevance of sociology to the interdisciplinary field of human-animal relations and will appeal to readers across the social sciences with interests in sociology, childhood studies, cultural and media studies and human-animal interaction.

What Does it Matter?

release date: Jan 01, 2013
What Does it Matter?
The present research sought to explain recent findings that mentally subtracting a past positive event increased one aspect of well-being -- namely, positive affect -- compared to simply reflecting on a past positive event and to an affectively neutral reflection (Koo et al., 2008). Based on evidence that both the emotion of gratitude and counterfactual reasoning create meaning, I hypothesized that imagining the ways in which a good thing might not have occurred would increase positive affect by increasing the meaningfulness of the event. Contrary to predictions, participants who only reflected on a past positive event, in addition to participants who also reflected on the absence of a past positive event, reported increased positive affect compared to participants who engaged in an affectively neutral task (i.e. reflected on what they did the previous day). The increase in positive affect among participants in the gratitude conditions was mediated by the meaningfulness of the events they described. The implications of these findings for understanding the emotion of gratitude, gratitude interventions, and the role of meaning in each are discussed.
