Letters for Brian
Handsome, clever and ambitious, Brian Johnson embodied the traits of a much-admired professional sportsperson. A successful rugby league player and coach, life changed when Brian was diagnosed with early-onset dementia at the age of 52. His cognitive decline was rapid and when his wife, Karen, could no longer talk with him, she wrote letters until his death, aged just 59. Letters for Brian provides encouragement for anyone who thinks they would be unable to cope with caring. It is heartfelt truth, showing how easy caring can be - yet how it can also be the hardest thing you''ll ever do. Ultimately, it is a story of love and loyalty.

Quick Access to Your Important Information

Quick Access to Your Important Information
I didn''t know that I needed a book like this until I became the caretaker for my ailing father and disabled sister simultaneously. In those roles, I quickly became overwhelmed and very frustrated because I found myself constantly looking for pieces of their important information in order to pay bills, handle medical appointments, manage repairs, etc. only to find out that their important documents, papers, and receipts were scattered about in different locations throughout their houses? They didn''t always know exactly where their information was, which added to my mounting frustration. I set out to find a way to compile each of their information into one document per person so that I didn''t have to continue to rummage through mounds of files and paperwork every single time that I needed something. That task changed my life. Once I had a template for each of them, all I had to do was fill in the blanks. Finding a means of compiling and organizing their information changed my life and made it so much easier for me to help them. Unfortunately, my father and sister both passed away suddenly, within two months of each other, but because I had taken the time to over things with them and then had written everything down, including their final wishes, I felt confident that I could handle things smoothly and in a manner that they deserved. Thus, this book was born. I now use it to keep all of my own important information in so that I can find anything I need quickly and easily and so can my family, if the need arises. Note: I have three suggestions for anyone purchasing this book.1) Fill out your information in pencil so that you can update it as needed.2) I strongly recommend adding stick on labels to each topic heading in the book. The simple addition of labels has made finding any information that I need so much faster.3) I have left extra writing space in the Table of Contents so that individuals who have purchased my book can fill in important information that they need and use all the time. Having this information at the beginning of the book saves so much time when you use it as a quick reference guide.

Out of the Corner

Out of the Corner
Karen Johnson speaks from the heart, with candour and honesty, in a way that is both compelling and inspiring. Karen''s story is one of triumph over adversity. She is the type of woman you would look at and never think that this was her history. I am proud of Karen, and when she set herself the challenge of writing she never wavered. This book may be shocking in parts, and sometimes it is in the smallest details that you find yourself trying to understand how you would cope, and what you would do, when faced with a life that Karen has lived in the past. However, what shines through most are Karen''s courage, determination and spirit as she rebuilds her future. T his book is an amazing achievement, second only to Karen''s role as a mum. Her three beautiful, intelligent, feisty and independent children are a testament to everything she is as a mother. Out of the Corner is a book which will leave a lasting impression and, while it covers a complex array of emotions, its singular message is universal: it is one of hope.

When Teddy Lost His Smile

When Teddy Lost His Smile
One day a teddy who couldn''t smile, met a little girl who loved him just the way he was... ''When Teddy Lost His Smile'' is a story designed for children living with facial palsy. The book aims to: - Improve self-esteem in children with facial palsy by normalising the condition. - Reduce feelings of isolation so they don''t feel they are ''the only one''. - Increase awareness of facial palsy in schools and the wider community. It was written with the assistance of a number of child psychologists, as well as children and parents living with facial palsy, to ensure that the story is relevant and addresses the challenges of this condition for young children in a way that is appropriate and sensitive. The story focuses on Teddy who Rosie buys at a toy sale. Teddy is very shy and he worries because he has lost his smile. Rosie who has facial palsy, shows teddy throughout the book that he shouldn''t worry so much about his lost smile. Rosie''s facial palsy is only spoken about in a very positive way and she is a confident, happy little girl with lots of friends. The book explores some areas related to children with facial palsy, for example, Rosie gets sand in her eye at one point, and she eats food that is easier to chew. She also talks about her party tricks, such as being able to raise just one eyebrow and sneeze with one eye open. At the end of the book, Rosie asks her daddy to give Teddy a new smile with his sewing kit, but Teddy decides that he is happy the way he is. The book is recommended for children aged 3 to 7. It is also a useful tool for an adult with facial palsy to introduce facial palsy to their child, or for teachers to educate their pupils about the condition.

Learning to Learn, Pre-Kindergarten

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Learning to Learn, Pre-Kindergarten
As the current K-12 generation approaches societal maturity they will encounter issues that are changing almost as fast as they are identified. Fast on the heels of the elementary population are the pre-kindergarten children who will be facing an ever-changing global society. Business and educational leaders have called for universal preschool education that will meet the developmental needs of pre-K children. These developmental needs are identified through research that supports the advantages of early childhood education and intervention. The primary goal is to close achievement gaps as they invest in the future. As world competitors in the global marketplace make investments in early education, and domestic social and economical conditions dictate the need for childcare, the call for implementing pre-K universal programs is being heard. State funded preschool programs have expanded over the last decade. By the 2001-2002 school year, 40 states had preschool programs. The social benefits of high-quality early learning programs and the long-term effects of early intervention on achievement are continually supported by research. Preschool has been shown to increases early reading and math skills in kindergarten and studies found that children who attended quality preschools demonstrated lower incidents of social problems. A national survey of American families revealed 82% of three and four year olds with employed mothers are in non-parental care, and 43% use child care centers for this care. With so many children already enrolled in environments outside of home, attention must be given to the merits of pre-K education. It is important to note that the research explaining the benefits of early education, qualifies the findings with the descriptive phrase "high quality." As states come on-line with pre-K programs they are requiring certified, degreed teachers and standard approved curricula. These requirements are elevating the importance and professionalism of the early childhood learning environment. (Contains 18 endnotes.).

Information Security Plan for Redacted Tax Service

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Information Security Plan for Redacted Tax Service
The Cybersecurity Master of Science Program at California State University San Marcos requires all students to participate in a Semester-In-Residence with a local business. I chose Redacted Tax Service (RTS), a small tax preparation company that has been in business in the San Diego area for more than 30 years. My final deliverables are a Risk Assessment and an Information Security Plan, detailing current security practices and providing recommendations for future improvements. Over the course of the Semester-In-Residence I became the company''s Chief Information Security Officer and, as my coworkers liked to call me, the IT Department. I ensured that all software was up-to-date, researched and installed a new antivirus software, ensured Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance when RTS began accepting credit cards, and mitigated any incidents. The most potentially serious incident occurred when the owner clicked on a link in a fraudulent email. The concern was that the entire computer, and potentially the network, could become encrypted. I was able to check log files, run an application to detect rogue software, and run a virus scanner on all network machines. In the end, I could determine that the malicious intent of the email hadn''t infected the network. Another large concern was physical security. The company had just moved into an office in a local downtown area and foot traffic increased dramatically. I coordinated the installation of a new alarm system, set-up a motion sensor by the front door, as well as a camera in the front office that could be viewed on a computer, tablet or cell phone. I also recommended the purchase of steel file cabinets with locks, which better protected sensitive client information. Some of the previous concerns were documented in the Risk Assessment I performed, including PCI compliance and physical security. Once the Risk Assessment was completed, I was able to determine the controls I felt were necessary using the General Services Administration''s (GSA) Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program''s (FedRAMP) Information Security Plan Template. I also documented the company''s system information, network configuration, and software applications used. I believe this may prove to be even more useful than the security controls, since it had never been documented before. Overall, I was able to complete a Risk Assessment, an Information Security Plan, and ensure a secure and maintainable network. There will always be work to be done but I am confident that Redacted Tax Service is much more secure, in both network and physical security, since I became involved.
