Hedda Gabler
"In Hedda Gabler, a moving exploration of female oppression, a recently married Hedda navigates her new identity as a wife and the intense constraints put on her by society. She prefers pistols to cooking and cares not for raising a family. As Hedda fights against the pressures of her new life and her own neuroses, she comes to terms with an untimely choice. Sirens: Elektra in Bosnia is a gripping story about the horrors of collective and personal wars as a family torn apart by death and destruction becomes their own worst enemy. When a deal between Agamemnon and his brother Menelaus goes awry, Iphigenia becomes the blood sacrifice leading to truths her sister Elektra can no longer hide from. Against the backdrop of a family drama, Judith Thompson gives voice to the women who were silenced during the Bosnian War, examining a cultural trauma and its place in our collective history."--

Growing Up Silent in The 1950s

release date: Dec 01, 2012
Growing Up Silent in The 1950s
Growing Up Silent in the 1950s likely will become the definitive social history of the Silent Generation. Whether you were a part of this generation or have no idea there was such a generation, here you will find the answer to the central question: Who are the Silent Generation and why were they not acknowledged? Those of the Silent Generation have been called deferential, well-mannered, and book smart conformists. They did what they were expected to do, putting responsibilities first, always postponing who they wanted to be. They were reared in a contradictory world, living their youth in the safest time in history, yet always worried about "the bomb." Curwensville Joint High School Class of 1955, already identified by researchers as the year most representative of the Silent Generation, serves as the archetype of what it really was like growing up during the 1950s with comments and recollections from twenty percent of the class members.

All the Gentlemen Callers

release date: Mar 01, 2012
All the Gentlemen Callers
Reading letters, particularly love letters, is similar to reading a diary. We are interested and curious, but still hold a certain sense of being intrusive. However, letters are still considered the most personal way to understand the character and personality of an individual and of the zeitgeist in which the letters are written. Placing these particular letters in their historical context of The Roaring Twenties and The Great Depression is particularly poignant in that they are written mainly by those in their early twenties, young people who were on the cusp of the great adventure of life. In this collection most of the letters are written by gentlemen to one particular beauty Jessie Beverly Pifer, dashing, independent, fashionable, and always remembered as the stylish and vibrant Jebbie, Belle of the Class of 1924. The letters, many beautiful in their own right because of the handwriting, provide a first hand account of daily travails lived by the young nearly a century ago, expressing a parallel to modes of communication of then and now, displaying emotions familiar to all generations, and revealing the love and devotion of All the Gentlemen Callers who loved Jessie. We can t help but wonder how emails of today can ever connect the sender and the receiver through the carefully constructed, flowing reflection, and very personal expression found only in love letters written with a fountain pen. The Author, Dr. Judith Thompson Witmer (Director of the Capital Area Institute for Mathematics and Science at Penn State Harrisburg), holds a respect and passion for social history of small towns and the families who live there. The author of nearly a dozen books, ranging from biographies to educational administration and other trade books, her most recent publication (2011) is Jebbie: Vamp to Victim, the true story of Jessie Beverly Pifer, a beautiful young woman with many suitors who became entrapped in a web of deceit. All the Gentlemen Callers is a companion to Jebbie, focusing on the social interaction of young men who came calling on young women, a generation like no other in changing the social times and expectations of becoming adults in a time Studs Terkel called euphoric and F. Scott Fitzgerald termed The Jazz Age.

Ciel is catatonic and will only express herself through Strauss''s music on the piano and through classical song, while Jabber moves in and out of psychotic delusion. Their lives are desperate but they find peace, refuge, and blissful love in performing their own wild and woolly personalized version of Tennyson''s classic epic poem "Enoch Arden." This is a play about the truly redemptive and empowering nature of art, and how it can be recreated and reclaimed by anyone with the hunger and the will to do so.Based on Tennyson''s "Enoch Arden" and the melodrama for piano by Richard Strauss.

Invoking the Moral Imagination

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Invoking the Moral Imagination
The title and question guiding this inquiry is: "Invoking the moral imagination: What can a dialogue between social healing practitioners reveal about how compassion arises in the process of social healing?" the impetus for this study has evolved from my decades as a social healing practitioner, and a deep respect for the courage and moral imagination of my colleagues who have been steadily persevering in attempts to build bridges between those alienated by conflict, violence and dehumanization. As such, this study is designed to benefit the field of practice by offering a conceptual framework of how compassion arises in the process of social healing. Grounded in the premises of connected and participatory knowing, the study utilizes a three-day dialogue between twenty-five international peacebuilders in September 2002 as the means for data collection. the results of this inquiry illustrate that consistent themes have emerged from peacebuilding practice, even as they did in the dialogue itself, which point to compassion''s role and potential in healing ruptured relationships by establishing broader identity parameters and allowing for an experience of common humanity. This inquiry fits into an emerging trend in the field of peace studies, which I have termed social healing. the social healing paradigm uses a relational healing lens through which to view conflict transformation and peacebuilding. It addresses the ways in which people and groups have been harmed through structural and direct violence, and seeks to discover the means to heal the destructive psychological and social consequences of that wounding. It is the informing paradigm for the fields of transitional justice, restorative justice and reconciliation.

Academic Dishonesty

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Academic Dishonesty
There have been many studies done and much research completed on the problem of academic dishonesty at the college and university level. However, there is a dearth of studies done on academic dishonesty as it relates to the legal issues and trends related to higher education administration. The purpose of this research is to analyze the issues, outcomes and trends in federal and state courts concerning academic dishonesty at the university level. The study also provides guiding principles for colleges and universities in situations of academic dishonesty. This study looked at 74 court cases involving academic dishonesty from the period beginning in 1974 and ending in 2009. The research provided a 35-year record of court cases that were analyzed to determine which policies and procedures would yield higher education administrators the desired results. The issues of due process rights (including First Amendment rights and equal protection rights), breach of contract, immunity, negligence, libel, slander, conflict of interest, Americans with Disabilities, defamation, tort, retaliation, discrimination, and general legal procedural issues (including Article 78 issues specific to the state of New York and Tennessee Code issues specific to the state of Tennessee) are the prevelant issues concerning litigation. By a large margin, the two top issues found by this research were procedural issues (37%) and due process rights issues (34%). Of the 74 cases analyzed, 48 occurred in a public institution and 26 occurred in a private institution. Thirty-three of the 74 cases, or 45%, involved students pursuing a professional degree iii to become a medical doctor, nurse, veterinarian, engineer, dentist, lawyer or pharmacist. Forty-five of the 74 cases analyzed, or 61%, involved graduate students. The courts have consistently ruled that students are to be given full due process rights in general, and that they are to be treated with decency and fairness specifically. Of the 74 cases analyzed in this study, 59 of the verdicts were in favor of the institutions, 12 were in favor of the student, and 3 were split decisions between the institution and the student. Academic dishonesty is treated by the court system as a mixture of purely academic matters and disciplinary matters. If the court deems the action taken by the university is based on a purely academic matter, it generally will not interfere, unless there is evidence of arbitrary and capricious behavior on the part of the institution. The main issue involved in cases stemming from public universities has historically been the issue of due process rights; the main issue involved in cases stemming from private unversitites has historically been breach of contract issues. However, the court system is now intermingling the obligations of public and private universities when it comes to due process rights and breach of contract rights.
