Pacific Forest
This book addresses the contending views of the uses of Solomon Island forest. Ranging from an examination of the interaction between the first settlers and their forest, the book goes on to analyse the attitudes of the British administrators, planters, and missionaries. The colonial government sought to protect the resource, but neglected to consider the wishes of the forest’s inhabitants in planning for its future economic use. The independent governments failed to protect the dwindling forest on customary land in the face of accelerating demands from their own people and of Asian-based logging companies, while non-governmental organisations and aid-donors have tried to invoke a more conservative regime of forest use.

The Use of Alternative and Conventional Medications for Treating Hypertension by Jamaicans in the Hartford, Connecticut Area

The Use of Alternative and Conventional Medications for Treating Hypertension by Jamaicans in the Hartford, Connecticut Area
Abstract Background Hypertension continues to be an international public health concern. This chronic disease is highly prevalent in Caribbean countries. Jamaican migrants to the Greater Hartford, Connecticut area share in this high prevalence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concomitant use of herbal and conventional medicines for treating hypertension among these migrant Jamaicans. Methods Qualitative and quantitative mixed methods were used to carry out this study. Focus groups and in-depth interviews collected qualitative data and a survey questionnaire collected quantitative data allowing for representation and hypothesis testing. Analysis of qualitative data used a thematic approach while SPSS was used for univariate and bivariate analyses. Results Two focus group meetings initially led to selection of a sample for in-depth interviews with fifteen participants. Later, a questionnaire showed 92.9% of migrant Jamaicans continued to use herbal medicines for treating high blood pressure. The majority of respondents, 95.2% engaged in concomitant therapy, that is, use of both herbal and conventional medicines. Belief in the limited side effects of herbs was a primary reason given for continued use of herbal medicines. Strong correlations were seen for herbal and OTC use (p

History Matters

release date: Nov 24, 2010
History Matters
Written for everyone interested in women''s and gender history, History Matters reaffirms the importance to feminist theory and activism of long-term historical perspectives. Judith M. Bennett, who has been commenting on developments in women''s and gender history since the 1980s, argues that the achievement of a more feminist future relies on a rich, plausible, and well-informed knowledge of the past, and she asks her readers to consider what sorts of feminist history can best advance the struggles of the twenty-first century. Bennett takes as her central problem the growing chasm between feminism and history. Closely allied in the 1970s, each has now moved away from the other. Seeking to narrow this gap, Bennett proposes that feminist historians turn their attention to the intellectual challenges posed by the persistence of patriarchy. She posits a "patriarchal equilibrium" whereby, despite many changes in women''s experiences over past centuries, women''s status vis-à-vis that of men has remained remarkably unchanged. Although, for example, women today find employment in occupations unimaginable to medieval women, medieval and modern women have both encountered the same wage gap, earning on average only three-fourths of the wages earned by men. Bennett argues that the theoretical challenge posed by this patriarchal equilibrium will be best met by long-term historical perspectives that reach back well before the modern era. In chapters focused on women''s work and lesbian sexuality, Bennett demonstrates the contemporary relevance of the distant past to feminist theory and politics. She concludes with a chapter that adds a new twist—the challenges of textbooks and classrooms—to viewing women''s history from a distance and with feminist intent. A new manifesto, History Matters engages forthrightly with the challenges faced by feminist historians today. It argues for the radical potential of a history that is focused on feminist issues, aware of the distant past, attentive to continuities over time, and alert to the workings of patriarchal power.

Evaluation Methods in Research

release date: Dec 01, 2003
Evaluation Methods in Research
Intended as a guide for those wishing to draw on research techniques in order to inform the planning and undertaking of multi-method evaluation studies of educational initiatives. While it is possible to undertake evaluation without reference to research, the formal evaluation of education initiatives is enhanced by the use of research approaches to gather information on the nature of the developments that have taken place and/or merit and worth of the initiatives. In a climate where the question, "Does it work?" is being asked with increasing frequency, this book will consider ways of designing multi-method evaluation studies to help answer this question.
