Crown

release date: Feb 22, 2022
Crown
On the eve of Queen Elizabeth II''s historic 70th anniversary on the throne, Tracy Borman''s sweeping narrative of the British monarchy illuminates one of history''s most iconic and enduring legacies Since William the Conqueror, duke of Normandy, crossed the English Channel in 1066 to defeat King Harold II and unite England''s various kingdoms, forty-one kings and queens have sat on Britain''s throne: "shining examples of royal power and majesty alongside a rogue''s gallery of weak, lazy, or evil monarchs," as Tracy Borman evocatively describes them in her sparkling chronicle, Crown & Sceptre. Ironically, during very few of these 955 years has the throne''s occupant been unambiguously English―the Norman French, the Welsh-born Tudors, the Scottish Stuarts, and the Hanoverians and their German successors to the present day have dominated the throne. Appealing to the intrinsic fascination with British royalty, Borman lifts the veil to reveal the remarkable characters and personalities who have ruled and, since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, have more ceremonially reigned―a crucial distinction explaining the staying power of the monarchy as the royal family has evolved and adapted to the needs and opinions of its people, avoiding the storms of rebellion that brought many of Europe''s royals to an abrupt end. Richard III; Henry VIII; Elizabeth I; George III; Victoria; Elizabeth II: their names evoke eras and dramatic events, forming the sweep of British history that Borman recounts. She is equally attuned to the fabric of monarchy: the impact of royal palaces; the way monarchs have been portrayed in art, on coins, in the media; the ceremony and pageantry surrounding the crown. In 2024, Elizabeth II would eclipse France''s Louis XIV as the longest reigning monarch in history. Crown & Sceptre is a fitting tribute to her remarkable longevity and that of the magnificent institution she represents.

Printmaking in the Service of Botany
Gavin Bridson, bibliographer at the Hunt Institute, explains in the introduction that before printmaking the main problem for artists was distributing botanical drawings so that botanists everywhere could study them. Bridson goes on to trace the history of printing methods for botanical illustrations through five centuries. With the aid of photographic enlargement of details in a one to one ratio, 72 examples of relief, intaglio, planographic, nature-prints and photographic printing techniques are analyzed in this catalogue that accompanied a 1986 exhibition.

False Alarm
"Drawing together an impressive range of existing studies and displaying a dazzling grasp of program and budgetary details, White shows again and again that critics of Medicare and Social Security have hidden highly contested value judgments behind a veil of public-spirited alarmism. Despite treading familiar ground, False Alarm bristles with original arguments." -- Health Affairs

Principles of Catholic Theology: On God, trinity, creation, and Christ

release date: Jan 01, 2023
Principles of Catholic Theology: On God, trinity, creation, and Christ
"Catholic theology has to ask and answer fundamental questions: what is the nature and content of Christian revelation, what are the sources of revelation, how are the mysteries of the faith to be understood in relation to one another, and how do the truths of the Catholic faith relate to those of natural reason. In this four book set within the larger Thomistic Ressourcement series, Thomas Joseph White answers these fundamental questions and discusses the central mysteries of faith as they relate to God and human beings. Book 1 is a set of essays about the task of Catholic theology from a Thomistic point of view. Book 2 is an argument for the reasonableness of Christianity in a secular and pluralistic age. Book 3 is a set of essays on Trinitarian, Christological, and creation theology. Book 4 is a set of essays on theological anthopology, including Mariology and ecclesiology"--
