Noch vor wenigen Jahren konnte man den Eindruck haben, daß die neuzeitliche Trennung von Anthropologie und Ethik zu den kaum revidierbaren Voraussetzungen einer wohlbegründeten Moralphilosophie gehört. Inzwischen hat sich dieses Bild deutlich gewandelt. Wo die tieferliegenden Ursachen für die moralischen Krisenerscheinungen der Gegenwart im "Verlust der Tugend" gesucht werden, ist auch der Gedanke nicht weit, daß Platon, Aristoteles und Thomas von Aquin uns heute wieder mehr zu sagen haben als etwa Kant, Hume und Mill. Unbeirrt durch wissenschaftliche Trends hat Josef Pieper es wie kein anderer verstanden, den ursprünglichen Sinn der antik-mittelalterlichen Tugendlehre erneut zugänglich zu machen und von seinen vielfältigen Mißdeutungen klar zu unterscheiden. Seine Schriften zu den vier Kardinaltugenden Klugheit, Gerechtigkeit, Tapferkeit und Maß sowie den drei theologischen Tugenden Glaube, Hoffnung und Liebe werden hier erstmals in einem Band vorgelegt. Es gibt vermutlich keine andere Darstellung in diesem Jahrhundert, die in der Auslegung aller sieben Haupttugenden einen ebenso gründlichen wie umfassenden Einblick in die Fundamente der abendländisch-christlichen Lebenslehre gewährt.

Seitdem der Erkenntnisfortschritt in den Wissenschaften, wirtschaftlicher Aufschwung und soziale Daseinsfürsorge mit der erhofften Beseitigung grundlegender Ungewißheiten auch die Philosophie selbst überflüssig zu machen scheint, haben sich alle bedeutenden Philosophen des Jahrhunderts der Frage nach Berechtigung und Nutzen des Philosophierens gestellt. Unter verschiedenen Perspektiven hat Josef Pieper zu dieser Diskussion um Sinn und Berechtigung des Philosophierens Stellung bezogen und auf die untergründige Verbindung der anhaltenden Legitimationskrise mit den spezifischen Eigentümlichkeiten des neuzeitlichen Philosophiebegriffs hingewiesen. In der interpretierenden Rekonstruktion zentraler Positionen der abendländischen Philosophie wird dabei die ursprüngliche Gestalt eines Philosophierens erkennbar, das aus dem Dilemma falscher Alternativen befreit und das Anliegen des Philosophierenden wieder mit dem Denken und Sprechen des heutigen Menschen, seinem Verlangen nach geistiger Orientierung verbindet. Dieser Band der Werkausgabe Piepers enthält neben bereits veröffentlichten Schriften auch bisher ungedruckte Vorträge, den Münsteraner Habilitationsvortrag (über eine These Martin Heideggers), die Antrittsvorlesung (Philosophische Bildung) sowie einen Vortrag (nicht-christliche Philosophie) aus der Zeit seiner ersten Gastprofessur in den USA.

Plato''s famous dialogue, the Phaedrus, was variously subtitled in antiquity: "On Beauty", "On Love", "On the Psyche". It is also concerned with the art of rhetoric, of thought and communication. Pieper, noted for the grace and clarity of his style, gives an illuminating and stimulating interpretation of the dialogue. Leaving the more recondite scholarly preoccupations aside, he concentrates on the content, bringing the actual situation in the dialogue -- Athens and its intellectuals engaged in spirited debate -- alive. Equally alive is the discussion of ideas, which are brought to bear on contemporary experience and made to prove the perennial validity of Socratic wisdom, and its power to excite the mind. "The ultimate of human happiness is to be found in contemplation". In offering this proposition of Thomas Aquinas to our thought, Josef Pieper uses traditional wisdom in order to throw light on present-day reality and present-day psychological problems. What, in fact, does one pursue in pursuing happiness? What, in the consensus of the wisdom of the early Greeks, of Plato and Aristotle, of the New Testament, of Augustine and Aquinas, is that condition of perfect bliss toward which all life and effort tend by nature? The famous and popular Thomistic philosopher addresses the topic of hope from the perspective of human history and asks the questions: "Is man''s hope such that it can find any fulfillment in the field of human history?" And: "Is man''s human history such that it can give us any grounds not to despair?" Pieper looks at the movement of history, the idea of progress, man''s hope for a better future, and he counters the temptation to despair with a Christian philosophy of hope based on faith in divine providence and the compatibility of faith and reason.

One of the great Catholic philosophers of our day reflects on the way language has been abused so that, instead of being a means of communicating the truth and entering more deeply into it, and of the acquisition of wisdom, it is being used to control people and manipulate them to achieve practical ends. Reality becomes intelligible through words. Man speaks so that through naming things, what is real may become intelligible. This mediating character of language, however, is being increasingly corrupted. Tyranny, propaganda, mass-media destroy and distort words.
