In franchise contracts, the royalty rate and the fixed entrance fee are the main monetary clauses defining the payment scheme between the franchisor and the franchisee. In the traditional agency view, the presence of distant outlets leads the franchisor to choose a payment mechanism designed to provide incentives to the franchisee; that is, a low royalty rate associated with a high fixed fee. Based on a unique panel dataset, we provide evidence that, in the Brazilian context, spatial dispersion has the opposite impact, with interesting practical and research implications.

Résumé français : Cette thèse est divisée en deux parties. Dans la première partie on s''intéresse aux problèmes de commande optimale déterministes et on étudie des approximations intérieures pour deux problèmes modèles avec des contraintes de non-négativité sur la commande. Le premier modèle est un problème de commande optimale dont la fonction de coût est quadratique et dont la dynamique est régie par une équation différentielle ordinaire. Pour une classe générale de fonctions de pénalité intérieure, on montre comment calculer le terme principal du développement ponctuel de l''état et de l''état adjoint. Notre argument principal se fonde sur le fait suivant: si la commande optimale pour le problème initial satisfait les conditions de complémentarité stricte pour le Hamiltonien sauf en un nombre fini d''instants, les estimations pour le problème de commande optimale pénalisé peuvent être obtenues à partir des estimations pour un problème stationnaire associé. Nos résultats fournissent plusieurs types de mesures de qualité de l''approximation pour la technique de pénalisation: estimations des erreurs de la commande , estimations des erreurs pour l''état et l''état adjoint et aussi estimations de erreurs pour la fonction valeur. Le second modèle est le problème de commande optimale d''une équation semi-linéaire elliptique avec conditions de Dirichlet homogène au bord, la commande étant distribuée sur le domaine et positive. L''approche est la même que pour le premier modèle, c''est-à-dire que l''on considère une famille de problèmes pénalisés, dont la solution définit une trajectoire centrale qui converge vers la solution du problème initial. De cette manière, on peut étendre les résultats, obtenus dans le cadre d''équations différentielles, au contrôle optimal d''équations elliptiques semi-linéaires. Dans la deuxième partie on s''intéresse aux problèmes de commande optimale stochastiques. Dans un premier temps, on considère un problème linéaire quadratique stochastique avec des contraintes de non-negativité sur la commande et on étend les estimations d''erreur pour l''approximation par pénalisation logarithmique. La preuve s''appuie sur le principe de Pontriaguine stochastique et un argument de dualité. Ensuite, on considère un problème de commande stochastique général avec des contraintes convexes sur la commande. L''approche dite variationnelle nous permet d''obtenir un développement au premier et au second ordre pour l''état et la fonction de coût, autour d''un minimum local. Avec ces développements on peut montrer des conditions générales d''optimalité de premier ordre et, sous une hypothèse géométrique sur l''ensemble des contraintes, des conditions nécessaires du second ordre sont aussi établies.

The voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) plays an essential role in the nervous system for thegeneration of action potentials and, given its relevance, it has been used as a target of insecticides (e.g. pyrethroids, DDT and oxadiazines) to control vectors of human pathogens such as Aedes aegypti. Insects have only one copy of the Vgsc gene, but they produce multiple splice variants due to differential exon usage. We compared the exon conservation of the VGSC between 68 species (10 Orders). The amino acid similarity of exons ranged from 42.5 to 100% and evidenced an increase in the number of alternative, mutually exclusive and 5'' or 3'' alternative splice site exons from Diplura to Diptera. Mutations in the Vgsc gene (knockdown resistance, kdr) are one of the main mechanisms of resistance to pyrethroids in A. aegypti. Resistance alleles can provide both advantages (insecticide resistance) and disadvantages (fitness costs) to mosquitoes in the presence and absence of insecticides, respectively. We isolated a strain of A. aegypti carrying a kdr allele (410L+1016I+1534C) but congenic to a pyrethroid-susceptible strain. The levels of cross-resistance to multiple insecticides pyrethroids, DDT and oxadiazines were compared between three congenic strains carrying different kdr alleles (410L+1016I+1534C, 989P+1016G and 1534C). The 410L+1016I+1534C allele did not confer higher levels of resistance relative to the 1534C allele for most insecticides tested. However, the 410L+1016I+1534C allele conferred higher levels 1R-cis _S cypermethrin and deltamethrin relative to the 1534C allele. This is the first report of increased levels of resistance to a stereoisomer conformation associated to a kdr allele. To study the fitness costs associated, we conducted a population cage experiment where the congenic strains carrying the 410L+1016I+1534C and 1534C alleles were crossed and allowed to mate through nine generations in the absence of insecticide exposure (but a subset of mosquitoes of the F 9 were selected with deltamethrin and allowed to mate). There was a dramatic decrease in the allele frequencies of the 410L+1016I+1534Callele (resulting in decreased number mosquitoes homozygous for this allele) but it quickly recovered after deltamethrin selection. Overall, our results suggest that the 410L+1016I+1534C allele is highly advantageous over the 1534C allele in field populations of A. aegypti where 1R-cis _S cypermethrin or deltamethrin are applied but use of other pyrethroids would be equally inefficient for either of these alleles. However, the frequencies of the 410L+1016I+1534C allele would likely decrease relative to 1534C in the absence of pyrethroid exposure under conditions similar to those tested in this project.

This empirical article deals with the location strategy and performance outcomes of franchised chains in Brazil. Brazilian franchising has experienced vertiginous process of expansion in recent years, being present in different regions of this country of continental size, including the most remote and less developed. Based on the background literature in economics and management regarding location choices and spatial competition in retailing, we use a new and unique dataset to distinguish several behavior categories in spatial strategies of franchising chains in Brazil, via a two-step cluster analysis. The performance outcomes are then studied with econometric estimations on panel data. Our results provide evidence that the choice for agglomeration, and the location in areas with a high population and a high human development index, lead to higher chain performances.
