Transfer of Learning and the Cultural Matrix

release date: Aug 14, 2015
Transfer of Learning and the Cultural Matrix
This study, conducted in an international college in Thailand, aimed to understand the transfer of learning from an undergraduate academic literacy programme to the disciplines. In so doing, it adopted a cultural matrix to investigate the interrelationship among students'' perceptions of transfer of learning, their personal beliefs about knowledge, knowing and learning, and their secondary school backgrounds. A three-part questionnaire, supplemented by purposive semi-structured interviews, was used to collect data from all consenting students from the final course in a four-trimester programme. The first part of the questionnaire employed the Epistemic Beliefs Inventory (EBI) in gauging students'' beliefs about knowing and learning, the second part comprised the Measure of Academic Literacy, which measure students'' perceptions of transfer of learning from the literacy programme to the disciplines, and the questionnaire surveyed students'' demographic details, with regard to their secondary school context. Data were then analysed to establish the interrelationship between these data sets. Open-ended questions to the MALT section of the questionnaire were analysed, and, in order to illustrate and further understand the data analysis from the questionnaire, trained interviewers conducted semi-structured interviews. Initial, factorial analysis of the EBI indicated a factor structure that differed from that of the US origins of the instrument, suggesting a relationship between culture and beliefs. While analysis indicated a significant low-moderate relationship between students'' beliefs about knowledge and learning and the transfer of learning, no such association was detected between the beliefs and students'' secondary school background. The students'' multicultural backgrounds, coupled with ambivalent beliefs, may provide an explanation for this. The findings, thus, give partial support for the application of the cultural matrix to transfer of learning. The study makes an original contribution by applying the cultural matrix to learning in a previously unexplored way. In so doing, it aims to generate a general theory of transfer of learning while fostering a culturally pluralistic understanding of learners'' beliefs about knowledge and learning and the implications for such transfer. It also advocates an approach that supplements existing classroom-specific pedagogical methods with school-wide cultural management initiatives in order to better effect transfer of learning.

Belief Systems in American Politics

release date: Jan 01, 2020
Belief Systems in American Politics
There are vast literatures in multiple subfields of political science pertaining to the ways in which democratic citizens think about politics. There are still more literatures pertaining to the ways in which these thoughts about politics do or do not translate into political actions. This dissertation makes three novel contributions spanning these themes. The first is purely theoretical, applying the principles of Robert Brandom''s inferentialist philosophy of semantics to the concept of ideological belief systems to argue for changes to the way we think about and measure the organization of political beliefs in the mass public. Specifically, it argues that scholars of ideology should take seriously the relationships democratic citizens perceive between attitudes without strong assumptions regarding how they ought to go together based on major party conflict. The second examines the articulation of these ideological belief systems among political pundits, who through the combination of lacking of formal political power but being professionally involved in politics are arguably the most ideological class of democratic citizen. After sampling political pundits on Twitter and scaling them in two-dimensional preference space, I examine patterns in belief system polarization as the ability to correctly recover a pundit''s scaled preferences based on the text contained in their tweets. Finally, the third chapter examines floating policy voters, who change their presidential voting behavior from one election to the next on the basis of policy issues they consider important to their vote, during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. While the overall number voters who could conceivably cast floating policy votes was relatively small, these voters were significantly more likely than others to either vote for a different major party candidate than they did in 2012 or not vote at all.

Printing and Prophecy

release date: Nov 17, 2011
Printing and Prophecy
Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe''s earliest known printed book---not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl''s Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page---over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers'' reactions along approved paths. Authors were packaged---and packaged themselves---in word and image to respond to the tension, while leading figures of early modern culture such as Paracelsus, Martin Luther, and Sebastian Brant used printed prophecies for their own purposes in a rapidly changing society. Based on a wide reading of many sources, Printing and Prophecy contributes to the study of early modern literature, including how print changed the relationship among authors, readers, and texts. The prophetic and astrological texts the book examines document changes in early modern society that are particularly relevant to German studies and are key texts for understanding the development of science, religion, and popular culture in the early modern period. By combining the methods of cultural studies and book history, this volume brings a new perspective to the study of Gutenberg and later printers.

Strange and Terrible Visions of Wilhelm Friess, The: The Paths of Prophecy in Reformation Europe

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Strange and Terrible Visions of Wilhelm Friess, The: The Paths of Prophecy in Reformation Europe
Although nearly forgotten today, the prophetic writing of Wilhelm Friess was the most popular work of its kind in Germany in the second half of the sixteenth century. While the author Wilhelm Friess was a convenient fiction, his text had a long and remarkable history as it moved from the papal court in fourteenth-century Avignon, to Antwerp under Habsburg oppression, to Nuremberg as it was still reeling from Lutheran failures in the Schmalkaldic War, and then back to Antwerp at the outbreak of the Dutch revolt.Dutch scholars have recognized that Frans Fraet was executed for printing a prognostication by Willem de Vriese, but this prognostication was thought to be lost. A few scholars of sixteenth-century German apocalypticism have briefly noted the prophecies of Wilhelm Friess but have not studied them in depth. The Strange and Terrible Visions of Wilhelm Friess is the first to connect de Vriese and Friess, as well as recognize the prophecy of Wilhelm Friess as an adaptation of a French version of theVademecum of Johannes de Rupescissa, making these pamphlets by far the most widespread source for Rupescissa s apocalyptic thought in Reformation Germany. The book explains the connection between the first and second prophecies of Wilhelm Friess and discovers the Calvinist context of the second prophecy and its connection to Johann Fischart, one of the most important German writers of the time.Jonathan Green provides a study of how textual history interacts with print history in early modern pamphlets and proposes a model of how early modern prophecies were created and transmitted. The Strange and Terrible Visions of Wilhelm Friess makes important contributions to the study of early modern German and Dutch literature, apocalypticism and confessionalization during the Reformation, and the history of printing in the sixteenth century."
