A young man lives alone with his mother and his beloved dog in a house in a small village overlooking the fjord. The dog has run off and gone missing. This has never happened before... In The Dead Dogs, lives are shockingly disrupted by an event that changes the direction of their future. Fosse''s drama explores life lived in unexpected ways, with a sense of otherness pervading the present and colouring the characters'' relationships.

Not so much a sequel as an alternate perspective, Jon Fosse’s coda to his brilliant and much-lauded Melancholy, picks up the story of tormented landscape painter Lars Hertervig in 1902, shortly after his death. In the same meticulous and hypnotic prose for which Fosse is famous, Melancholy II serves not only as an investigation into the “collateral damage” of art, but into a master’s tools and obsessions. Taking place, like Melancholy, over the course of a single day, we are treated to the thoughts of Hertervig’s sister Oline, carrying on with her life in the absence of her beloved—if eccentric—brother. She recalls their childhood under a domineering father, recalls Hertervig’s difficulties fitting in, and likewise Hertervig the man: poor, always hovering on the brink, fanatical about painting and his own perceived shortcomings both as an artist and human being. Von der Einsamkeit des Unverstandenen: Ein vier Jahre alter Junge will die Welt an einem norwegischen Fjord, wo er mit seinen Eltern lebt, erkunden. Innerhalb von wenigen Tagen erfährt er, wie gross und stark die Macht der Erwachsenen ist, die ihn vor "gefährlichen" Abenteuern beschützen wollen. Immer wieder versucht er, zusammen mit seiner dreijährigen Schwester die Grenzen seiner Freiheit auszureizen, immer wieder wird er daran gehindert, diese Erfahrung zu machen. Aber dabei erkennt er auch die Liebe zu seiner kleinen Schwester und wie wichtig ihm das Gefühl des Geborgenseins in dieser Beziehung ist. Eine schöne Geschichte mit eindrücklich ruhigen Bildern und - wie ein Kontrast - Sätzen mit z.T. über 300 Wörtern. Fosse reiht Hauptsatz um Hauptsatz ohne Punkt aneinander, manchmal ein ganzes Kapitel lang. Die Sprache bleibt aber so schlicht und klar, dass Kinder mühelos folgen können. Ganz zu Recht wurde dieses Buch in Norwegen als bestes Kinderbuch des Jahres ausgezeichnet. Sehr empfehlenswert. Ab 6 Jahren, ausgezeichnet, Urs Geissbühler.

In einem Haus an einem Fjord liegt Signe, eine alte Frau, auf einer Bank und sieht sich selbst als junge Frau durch die Räume gehen. Sie sieht sich am Fenster stehen und auf das Wasser blicken. Sie sieht ihren Mann Asle, den es in seinem kleinen Boot immer wieder auf den Fjord hinauszog, bis er eines Tages nicht zurückkehrte. In dem alten Haus, das erfüllt ist von den Stimmen seiner ehemaligen Bewohner, traumwandelt Signe durch die Vergangenheit und begegnet den vorangegangenen Generationen der Familie - bis zurück zu Asles Ururgrossmutter Alise, die in der Nacht am Ufer ein Feuer hütet. Denn schon damals hatte es einen gegeben, der nie mehr vom Fjord zurückkam. er ging nicht weg, er blieb hier bei ihr, die ganze Zeit, bis er so plötzlich verschwand, denkt sie, er war bei ihr, vom ersten Mal, dass sie ihn ankommen sah und er da stand und sie sich einfach nur anschauten, einander zulächelten, als ob sie alte Bekannte wären, als ob sie sich schon immer kennen würden irgendwie, aber sich so unendlich lang nicht mehr gesehen hätten und sich darum so riesig freuen würden, dieses Wiedersehen machte beide dermaßen froh, dass die Freude die Führung übernahm, sie führte sie aufeinander zu, als hätte ihnen das ganze Leben lang etwas Wichtiges gefehlt, und jetzt wäre es da, endlich, jetzt war es da.

Still at odds with her sister and her mother and haunted by her dead father, she''s unable to shake the continuing presence of the past in her life... Jon Fosse''s new play, and this English version by David Harrower, were commissioned by the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

They have a child and life changes. He can''t go out and she can''t stay in. He writes words that no one will publish and she takes a lover.
