John Owen's view of illumination and its contemporary relevance

John Owen's view of illumination and its contemporary relevance
This dissertation examines the teaching of illumination or spiritual enlightenment as it was understood by the Puritan, John Owen (1616-1683), in order to gain a better understanding of this biblical doctrine and its relevance for today''s church. This pastor and theologian has been recognized as one of the Puritan giants of his day. Statement of the problem: There are two interrelated problems associated with the topic of illumination: 1) There is a lack of detailed theological discussion regarding spiritual illumination. While the Scriptures speak about the Holy Spirit enlightening the minds of the believer, many Protestant writings in theology and hermeneutics do not thoroughly discuss the Spirit''s illumination but only give scant attention to this matter. 2) There are several questions concerning the nature and function of spiritual illumination. Is spiritual enlightenment even required for a person to comprehend biblical truth? Or, are our reasoning abilities sufficient? Another question revolves around the way we are illumined. Is illumination by means of Scripture or by the Spirit or by both components? The process of illumination raises a question: does illumination assume an individualistic or a corporate approach or are both approaches valid? These are some of the questions which will surface and will be addressed throughout this work. The Significance of this study: Perhaps the most significant contribution of this study involves the thinking of John Owen who was one of the most outstanding Puritan theologians and pastors of his day. This study on the spirit''s enlightenment seeks to make a contribution to the area of historical theology. The influence of the various theological teachings and the historical events surrounding John Owen had an influence on his theological understanding of illumination. Objectives of this study: There are a few fundamental objectives included in the study of John Owen''s theology of illumination: 1) To analyze and evaluate various opinions of illumination espoused in John Owen''s day, but not endorsed by this Puritan. 2) To provide a descriptive.
