Barbarians at the Wall

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Barbarians at the Wall
The people of the first nomadic empire left no written records, but from 200 BC they dominated the heart of Asia for 400 years. They changed the world. The Mongols, today''s descendants of Genghis Khan, see them as ancestors. Their rise cemented Chinese unity and inspired the first Great Wall. Their heirs under Attila the Hun helped destroy the Roman Empire. We don''t know what language they spoke, but they became known as Xiongnu, or Hunnu, a term passed down the centuries and across Eurasia, enduring today in shortened form as ''Hun''. Outside Asia precious little is known of their rich history, but new evidence reframes our understanding of the indelible mark they left on a vast region stretching from Europe and sweeping right across Central Asia deep into China. Based on meticulous research and new archaeological evidence, Emperors and Barbarians traces their epic story, and shows how the nomadic cultures of the steppes gave birth to a ''barbarian empire'' with the wealth and power to threaten the civilised order of the ancient world.

Empire of Horses

release date: Mar 09, 2021
Empire of Horses
An authoritative and rich history of the remarkable Xiongnu culture—a lost empire which preceded the Mongols and even China itself. The author of landmark histories such as Genghis Khan, Attila, and Xanadu invites us to discover a fertile period in Asian history that prefigured so much of the world that followed. The people of the first nomadic empire left no written records, but from 200 bc they dominated the heart of Asia for four centuries, and changed the world in the process. The Mongols, today’s descendants of Genghis Khan, see these people as ancestors. Their rise cemented Chinese identity and inspired the first Great Wall. Their descendants helped destroy the Roman Empire under the leadership of Attila the Hun. We don’t know what language they spoke, but they became known as Xiongnu, or Hunnu, a term passed down the centuries and surviving today as “Hun,” and Man uncovers new evidence that will transform our understanding of the profound mark they left on half the globe, from Europe to Central Asia and deep into China. Based on meticulous research and new archaeological evidence, Empire of Horses traces this civilization’s epic story and shows how this nomadic cultures of the steppes gave birth to an empire with the wealth and power to threaten the order of the ancient world.

Amazons

release date: Jun 15, 2017
Amazons
Since the time of the ancient Greeks we have been fascinated by accounts of the Amazons, an elusive tribe of hard-fighting, horse-riding female warriors. Equal to men in battle, legends claimed they cut off their right breasts to improve their archery skills and routinely killed their male children to purify their ranks. For centuries people believed in their existence and attempted to trace their origins. Artists and poets celebrated their battles and wrote of Amazonia. Spanish explorers, carrying these tales to South America, thought they lived in the forests of the world’s greatest river, and named it after them. In the absence of evidence, we eventually reasoned away their existence, concluding that these powerful, sexually liberated female soldiers must have been the fantastical invention of Greek myth and storytelling. Until now. Following decades of new research and a series of groundbreaking archeological discoveries, we now know these powerful warrior queens did indeed exist. In Amazons, John Man travels to the grasslands of Central Asia, from the edge of the ancient Greek world to the borderlands of China, to discover the truth about the warrior women mythologized as Amazons. In this deeply researched, sweeping historical epic, Man redefines our understanding of the Amazons and their culture, tracking the ancient legend into the modern world and examining its significance today.

Analysis and Simulation of Impairments in Xampling Based Receivers

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Analysis and Simulation of Impairments in Xampling Based Receivers
Recent advances in Compressed Sensing theory has lead researcher to apply these techniques to the design of sampling systems which can sample spectrally sparse signals with a wide bandwidth below the Nyquist rate. Xampling is a framework proposed to design such Sub-Nyquist sampling systems. This work presents results and analysis of simulations of impairments in of such systems. The impacts of hardware impairments, choice of reconstruction algorithm, signal energy dynamic range and channel mismatches on system performance are studied. Results show that if a system is designed with a sufficient number of channels then it may be able to maintain performance despite impairment.

A Viking Odyssey: Around the World 1,000 Years Ago

release date: Apr 19, 2016
A Viking Odyssey: Around the World 1,000 Years Ago
The world was first unified 1,000 years ago. When Leif the Lucky and his Viking explorers linked Europe and America with their settlement at Vinland it marked a profound change in the world. Suddenly, almost every region on earth was in touch with its neighbours, spanning continents and oceans. For a few years, it was in theory possible to send a message all the way round the world. At the time, no one could possibly have known this, or what it would lead to. But in hindsight the early 11th century gives us a brief hint of today''s global unity. But what was the world like 1,000 years ago? What would a traveller have seen as they ventured across the continents? John Man circles the globe at the turn of the millennium to explore its major cultures, revealing many surprises. Islam was confident and curious, Europe was just awakening after its dark-age slumber, and Asia was home to the world''s most refined civilizations, while some aboriginal peoples were modifying age-old ways in Australia, Africa and the Americas. A Viking Odyssey is a fascinating and sumptuous account of the world in the year 1,000, bringing to life the diversity of human cultures, from hunter-gatherers to sophisticated city-dwellers, and the links between them. This book is a revised edition of Atlas of the Year 1,000, with new contributions from John Man. "A splendidly conceived and executed idea." Dr. John Roberts, The New Penguin History of the World. "Just brilliant. A real contribution to world history." Prof. Robert Moore, University of Newcastle. "A splendid accomplishment." Dean R. Snow, Professor and Head of Anthropology, Pennsylvania State University. "A wealth of fascinating information." Ray Inskeep, formerly Professor of Archaeology, University of Cape Town. "A fascinating snapshot of all corners of the world at the dawn of the global age" David Northrup, Dept of History, Boston College, USA. "A fresh look at the world at the dawn of the past millennium". Science News. "The most original of all the spate of books that came out during the millennium." Michael Palin. JOHN MAN is a bestselling historian and traveller specializing in Central Asia (in particular Mongolia). Genghis Khan: Life, Death and Resurrection is a best-seller in 21 languages. His other books include Attila the Hun, Kublai Khan, The Terracotta Army, and The Great Wall. In 2014, Xanadu was published in the US as Marco Polo, to accompany the Netflix TV series.
