The Vagrant

release date: Sep 19, 2023
The Vagrant
A modern parable for ambitious people on the relationship between success and self-reflection, from the coauthor of the acclaimed Go-Giver series and a renowned authority on leadership. Have you ever wondered, “If I could go back in time and talk to my twenty-year-old self, what would I say?” In The Vagrant, a brash young executive finds himself asking that exact question when his world is turned upside down. From Dan Rockwell, creator of the popular Leadership Freak blog, and John David Mann, coauthor of the award-winning classic The Go-Giver, The Vagrant follows Bob, a bright, up-and-coming leader in the health care business who leads a team of forty at a large city hospital. When he’s called up to the seventh floor one fine spring morning, he fully expects a promotion in line with his C-suite aspirations. Instead, he’s fired. Moments after losing his job, Bob has a strange alleyway confrontation with a homeless man rambling about “the four impediments of the Apocalypse.” To Bob, his words are nothing but incoherent ranting, but they soon prove eerily prophetic. In the weeks that follow, Bob loses everything he holds dear—his apartment, possessions, reputation, and health—and ends up living on the street . . . until chance leads him back to that same alley and he crosses paths with the strange man once again. In this timeless, eye-opening tale of redemption, Bob’s tailspin journey through loss and catastrophic failure invites readers to examine the nature of genuine leadership and embark upon their own story of self-discovery.

Vibrational Population Inversions Within Normal Shock Waves in CO2-N2-He Mixtures

Vibrational Population Inversions Within Normal Shock Waves in CO2-N2-He Mixtures
Numerical solutions are given for vibrational population inversions created in CO2-N2-He mixtures due to shock wave heating of a cold gas. The results indicate that population inversions between the (040) and (001) energy levels of CO2 and, to a lesser degree, between the (200) and (001) levels, can be created in the vibrational nonequilibrium flow behind a normal shock front. The properties of these inversions as a possible laser medium are assessed; the results indicate that the laser properties of this shock-induced nonequilibrium flow are not as promising as those of lasers operating on the principle of rapid expansions. Lincoln and the U.S. Colored Troops

release date: Nov 04, 2013
Lincoln and the U.S. Colored Troops
When Abraham Lincoln issued his final Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, he not only freed the slaves in the Confederate states but also invited freed slaves and free persons of color to join the U.S. Army as part of the U.S. Colored Troops (USCT), the first systematic, large-scale effort by the U.S. government to arm African Americans to aid in the nation’s defense. By the end of the war in 1865, nearly 180,000 black soldiers had fought for the Union. Lincoln’s role in the arming of African Americans remains a central but unfortunately obscure part of one of the most compelling periods in American history. In Lincoln and the U.S. Colored Troops John David Smith offers a concise, enlightening exploration of the development of Lincoln’s military emancipation project, its implementation, and the recruitment and deployment of black troops. Though scholars have written much on emancipation and the USCT, Smith’s work frames the evolution of Lincoln’s ideas on emancipation and arming blacks within congressional actions, explaining how, when, and why the president seemed to be so halting in his progression to military emancipation. After tracing Lincoln’s evolution from opposing to supporting emancipation as a necessary war measure and to championing the recruitment of black troops for the Union Army, Smith details the creation, mobilization, and diverse military service of the USCT. He assesses the hardships under which the men of the USCT served, including the multiple forms of discrimination from so-called friends and foes alike, and examines the broad meaning of Lincoln’s military emancipation project and its place in African American historical memory.
