Dithiolate Complexes of the Early Transition Metals

Dithiolate Complexes of the Early Transition Metals
Metal dialky1amides have been used to prepare complexes of the type [R[subscript 4]E] (6-x)[superscript ML][subscript 3] where R[subscript 4]E is a tetraalkylammoniuna or tetraphenylarsonium ion, L=benzene-1,2-dithiol, toluene-3 ,4-dithiol or o-mercaptophenol (for M=Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, and Ta), L=1,2-dihydroxybenzene (for Ti and Hf), L=naphthalene- 1, 8 -dithiol (for Ti, Zr, and Hf), and x=4 (for Ti, Zr and Hf) or x=5 (for Nb and Ta), The complexes were prepared as Li or Na salts according to the general equation; M(NR[subscript 2])[subscript x] + (6 -x)NaHL + (x-3)H[subscript 2]L[superscript THF]--u003e NA[subscript (6-x)]ML[subscript 3] + xHNR[subscript 2].The alkali metal was then replaced by an organic cation in acetonitrile. Comparison of UV and visible spectra of the new complexes with previously isolated complexes shows that there is a shift of the lowest energy band to higher energy in the order: Ti
