Alice's Sister

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Alice's Sister
We have all imagined it--our daytime activities reappear, twisted, in our dreams at night. What, then, drove Alice to dream of bodily distortions and dangerous adults? What is happening in her waking life to cause this darkness? Reimagined using details from Carroll''s original work, Jessica Young''s collection ALICE''S SISTER focuses on Alice''s older sister, Mary, and the trouble she faces--the quiet, shadowy disturbances--that affects everyone around. It seems the rabbit hole goes much farther down than we thought. Employing ambitious writing techniques such as rotating narrators, Young invites us in for the descent. "In this haunted reimagining of a Victorian children''s book, wonderland conceals a darker story. Jessica Young writes with uncanny precision about the most occluded reaches of the heart. The breadth of compassion in these poems is all the more remarkable because of the clarity with which they make their case: that innocence is a dangerous fantasy imposed upon the young."--Linda Gregerson "Jessica Young''s first collection takes us so far beyond the looking glass, it''s a reluctant surprise to return to the world upon putting it down. We have here a young poet fully formed. Her voice is sure when it needs to be, and full of fear and questioning when that''s called for. She has invented an entrancing time and place, and peopled it. But, although this collection has some of a fiction''s best elements, this is song. Musical, all-encompassing. These poems call up for me all of my favorite poets, but Jessica YOung sounds like no one else I''ve ever read."--Laura Kasischke "If you thought there was nothing else to say about the Alice in Wonderland story, think again. Jessica Young has taken on a detective-poet''s role in potent poems of haunting, delicate strength. Read them closely to journey more deeply into the mystery of that classic, very strange book."--Naomi Shihab Nye "Jessica Young constructs a world so lush with characters and character--the red trillium flowers underfoot, the spruce piano keys--that we could be forgiven it we wished to simply linger, for a while, in the detail. But this book is far more than a poetic re-imagination of Lewis Carroll. In a series of striking formal experiments and narrative turns, Young''s poetry takes on our dailiness in order to change it imperceptibly, "like a plum sliced/...silently pitted, twisted back/into place, and presented as if untouched, undamaged."--Tung-Hui Hu "I can''t remember the last time I read a collection that was, all at once, as brilliantly conceived, as wondrous with language, and as fun to get lost in."--A. Van Jordan

Making Space at the Well

Making Space at the Well
"When it comes to ministry related to mental health concerns, prayer and Scripture are not enough. Beginning with the biblical motif of going to the village well for the waters that sustain life and exploring the communal significance of that well, pastor, professor, and clinical psychologist Jessica Young Brown calls on the Black Church to rally its historic resilience and creativity to acknowledge and engage those in its pews who are struggling with mental health concerns. Using the acronym of SPACE, the author discusses: Silencing the Stigma ... naming the negative attitudes and mistaken assumptions about mental illness, especially in the African American community Presence & Persistence ... identifying the importance of authentic relationships in healing mind and spirit Application & Action ... highlighting practical steps to address the needs as they emerge Cautions ... being real about the fears and risks related to mental health crises, including the importance of referrals Expression & Exhortation ... calling on the cultural power of testimony to encourage the entire congregation to access the healing power of God Rev. Dr. Young Brown concludes with a practical exploration of "Now What? Digging the Well and Drawing from It." The book''s appendix features a brief primer on common mental disorders that frequently affect members of our family, neighborhood, and church"--

More Than a Prayer

release date: Jan 01, 2010
More Than a Prayer
While African Americans show similar rates of mental health concerns, they seek and obtain significantly fewer traditional mental health services (MHS) as compared to other groups. One alternative to traditional forms of MHS is the use of church-based resources, such as pastoral counseling. Pastors frequently report counseling as a large part of their duties. Therefore, their perceptions about mental health have a major impact on services that parishioners receive. This online survey assessed 40 pastors'' perceptions about mental health services, as well as perceived needs for information or training. Attitudes about mental health were significantly related to variety of counseling provided and frequency of counseling. Attitudes toward mental health, church size, and pastoral education did not significantly predict counseling or referral. Topics discussed in counseling and desires for more training were evaluated and areas for future intervention are discussed in light of results from this study.

Personality and Interpersonal Predictors Among Ministers

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Personality and Interpersonal Predictors Among Ministers
A review of vocational assessment in ministry populations revealed that since the 1950s, ministers have been assessed using psychological and vocational assessments in an effort to ascertain goodness of fit for ministry tasks. However, ministers consistently produce profile reports that are significantly different from the population as a whole. In addition, while there has been much research on the general ministerial vocation, there has been little research on particular ministerial roles and the predictors for ministers who will excel in those tasks. The literature on ministers is outdated and has not taken into consideration the peculiar characteristics of the ministry population, such as a special set of societal standards and the "call" from God to engage in ministry. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a personality profile exists that can predict the types of ministers that would be most likely to exhibit a preference in pastoral care and counseling tasks as a specific ministerial vocation. Based on a review of the literature, several variables from psychological and vocational assessments emerged as possible predictors. In addition, it was hypothesized that the relationship between these variables could be explained by a friendly-dominant style of interpersonal behavior. Results suggest that there is in fact a personality profile that can predict whether ministers will exhibit a preference for pastoral care and counseling tasks. This profile was different based on setting, as was the goodness of fit with the theoretically proposed interpersonal style. Implications and limitations are discussed.

The Impact of Phonics Instruction on the Reading Accuracy of Second Grade Students
The researcher studies the implications of teaching phonics in small groups on the reading accuracy of second grade students. Students were split into four groups, based on reading ability. The researcher took the reading accuracy scores of each student at the beginning, middle, and end of the experiment. For the first four weeks, students in groups 1a and 2a received only whole class instruction. For the last four weeks, groups 2a and 2b received the small group instruction, in addition to the whole class phonetic instruction Groups 1a and 1b only received the whole class instruction. Groups 1a and 1b made more progress in their accuracy score while receiving only the whole class instruction. Groups 2a and 2b made more progress while receiving the experimental phonetic treatment. The results were split with 50% of students making the most progress while participating in the experimental group and 50% of students making the most progress while participating in the control group. The data provided to be too divided to identify the small group instruction as the cause for the change in reading accuracy scores.
