Writes of Spring

Writes of Spring
Communication is a pivotal element in creating theatre with other artists, with audiences, and with the outside world. Theatre artists are required to collaborate at nearly every step of the process. Despite the necessity of highly developed collaboration skills, communication in the creation of theatre is an often-underdeveloped curriculum area. As a Director and Teaching Artist I am particularly interested in how to find new ways of collaborating so I may model and pass these skills to my students. Through a qualitative research survey of communication used in collaborative devising, this research analyzes environments that improve communication and allow for maximum creativity in an effort to develop critical communication pedagogy. This study examines my approach in working through a devising process as the Coordinator of a collaborative group of adults creating an original play. I examine our process and make connections as to how devising influenced my future work as a Director and Teaching Artist. By examining the theatres that make extensive use of ensemble devising as a tool for creating theatre, I gained insight into more collaborative ways of working. This research found support through examination of group communication theories and methods in which they promote collaborative spirit. Finally, critical pedagogy offered a lens through which I can impart these discoveries to young artists. I discovered ways to use the model of devising to open the possibilities for my students to take ownership over their processes and the art they create. I also gained insight into the role of facilitator in order to develop ways of modeling and teaching these communications. Communication pedagogy in the theatre allows me the tools to identify, question, and transform my experiences in creating theatre as a director and teaching artist.

Higher Education in the United States

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Higher Education in the United States
This dissertation represents the first historical, descriptive, and spatial analysis of higher education in the United States. The principal contribution of the dissertation is a database which allows for multiple ways to visualize and investigate spatial patterns of institutions of higher education (hereafter, IHE). The lack of a geo-referenced database of the nation''s IHE previously inhibited the spatial analysis of the U.S. higher education system as a whole. The secondary contribution of the dissertation is identifying a series of factors that influenced the spatial patterns of IHE. Educational, federal, state, and demographic factors have shaped the geography of IHE and enrollment in the U.S.Literature reviews trace the history of U.S. higher education from the founding of Harvard in 1636 through to the twenty-first century. Maps of the historical spread of IHE set the review of literatures within a spatial context. Periods of structural change in U.S. higher education between 1939 and 2007 are identified. Traditional and spatial statistical analyses for IHE and their enrollments were conducted using the dissertation database. Results are presented across multiple spatial scales, including the nation, state, and ZIP CodeTM levels. A notable finding of the dissertation is that the spatial core of "traditional" IHE has remained in the Northeast. Western and southern states could not "catch up" with the Northeast in terms of the concentration of either four-year or private, non-profit IHE relative to the college-aged population. However, western states compensated for the lack of private, non-profit IHE by establishing public and two-year IHE. Scholars have examined the post-WWII expansion of U.S. higher education in great detail, yet the analysis of higher education change from a geographic perspective previously has been limited. This dissertation fills a recognized research void with two contributions: the creation of a spatial database of IHE and the preliminary interpretation of spatial patterns of IHE in light of educational, federal, state, and demographic factors. A third contribution, in the longer run, will be making the database available to other researchers and policy makers.

Rationality and Reproduction
Health insurance has become essential in mediating the extremely high costs of childbirth; however, it has been neglected in fertility research. This study examines health insurance coverage as an economic determinant of fertility and includes discussions of the cost of raising children, contraception and childbirth as well as opportunity costs to illustrate that the effect of health insurance may differ by resources, such as income and education. Using data from the 2001 Survey of Income and Program Participation, I analyze the effects of insurance on the probability of pregnancy and birth with Discrete-Time Hazard Models. Results show that health insurance is a powerful indicator of fertility. Married women with insurance coverage, especially private insurance coverage provided by someone else''s plan, coverage in own name or public insurance, have increased expected odds of fertility compared to uninsured women.

Il Libro Dei Miracoli

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Il Libro Dei Miracoli
Multi-media votive sculpture, made from wax, papier-mâché, wood, terra cotta and textiles, is a long-neglected subject of study in early modern Italian art history. This dissertation focuses on an unparalleled seventeenth-century manuscript, the Libro dei miracoli, which reproduces in watercolor a number of the lost multi-media votive statues that once populated the church of S. Maria della Quercia in Viterbo. The names of votaries, along with a description of their miracles, accompany the watercolors and present an invaluable source of information that allows for this first comprehensive study of votary identity. Abundant archival material maintained by S. Maria della Quercia, situated within larger historical events and cultural trends, informs this dissertation which explores the democratic nature behind votive statuary effigies. The offerings granted male and female members of most socio-economic classes in early modern Italy the extraordinary opportunity to act as patrons of art. Moreover, the sculptures, and watercolors after them, were individualized representations of votaries that can be considered a form of portraiture available to rich and poor alike.
