Almost a year after the lost of the ''Mary Jane'', and with it their eldest son Willie, the Leybourne family is slowly resuming normal life once more, although the father Joe''s mind and health still suffer. The children head down to the Silver Strand beach before summer ends but disregard the danger of the tide. While escaping the caves before they are trapped, they come across the body of a girl and are able to grab her before it is too late. After she recovers, they discover that she is in fact a cousin, being the daughter of Antony Leybourne. This causes Joe to reveal the reason why he never mentions this part of the family.
