JAVA AND OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING PARADIGM

release date: Jan 01, 2005
JAVA AND OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING PARADIGM
This practice-oriented text explores the intricacies of Java language in the light of different procedural and object-oriented paradigms. It is primarily focussed on the Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) paradigm using Java as a language. The text begins with the programming overview and introduces the reader to the important object-oriented (OO) terms. It then deals with Java development as well as runtime environment set-up along with the steps of compilation and running of a simple program. The text explains the philosophy of Java by highlighting its core features and demonstrating its advantages over C++. Besides, it covers GUI through Java applets, Swing, as well as concurrency handling and synchronization through threads. A chapter is exclusively devoted to fundamental data structures and their applications in Java. The book shows how Unified Modeling Language (UML) represents objects, classes, components, relationships, and architectural design. This comprehensive and student friendly book is intended as a text for the students of computer science and engineering, computer applications (BCA/MCA), and IT courses.

The Krugersdorp Cult Killings

release date: Sep 01, 2020
The Krugersdorp Cult Killings
Eleven murders over a period of four years sent shockwaves through the Krugersdorp community and made headlines nationwide. Eventually these murders were connected to Cecilia Steyn and her cult, Electus per Deus (chosen by God). Members of the cult were willing to do anything for Cecilia – even if it meant committing murder. The murderers are intelligent, ordinary people – a teacher, a financial broker, and a teenager who – despite her involvement in the murders – still managed to obtain six distinctions in matric and be accepted to medical school. Their victims merely kept their appointments, not knowing that their appointments were with death. Who is Cecilia Steyn? How can one person manipulate five others to commit murder and perjury on her behalf? How did Satanism contribute to all of this? How did inexperienced criminals manage to evade capture for so long? Jana Marx answers these and other questions in this true-crime account that led to one of the most sensational murder cases in the country’s history. Through interviews with those in the inner circle, evidence given in court and police files covering a period of four years, Marx attempts to answer the public’s questions and provide a view of the inner workings of such a cult.

A Free Woman on God's Earth

release date: Jan 01, 2009
A Free Woman on God's Earth
"A Free Woman On God's Earth" The True Story of Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman, The Slave Who Won Her Freedom is the inspiring story of Mumbet, an enslaved African woman who lived in Sheffield, Massachusetts during Revolutionary War times. Owned by John and Hannah Ashley, Mumbet served eleven patriots as they wrote impassioned letters to King George demanding freedom from the British. Mumbet could not help but overhear their conversations. These Declaration of Grievances became the Sheffield Resolves, or the Sheffield Declaration, the precursor to the Declaration of Independence and the irony of the sentiments in this document was not lost on Mumbet. After a particularly brutal incident, where Mistress Hannah Ashley intends to strike a servant girl with a hot poker from the hearth, Mumbet puts her own arm up to block the blow and is burned to the bone. When she finally heals, she realizes she can no longer live enslaved and waits for the right moment. The moment comes in 1780 with the ratification of the Massachusetts Constitution, making into the law the words, "All men are created free and equal." Mumbet takes these words and used them to sue for her freedom. On August 21, 1781, she becomes a free woman.

A Rule Is to Break: A Child's Guide to Anarchy
The anti-instruction manual - because there are no rules for bad behavior! Children are natural masters of anarchy, but are too often unaware of the power they wield in their cute little hands, and too seldom encouraged by grown-ups to figure that out. In "A Rule Is To Break: A Child's Guide To Anarchy" that determined little devil girl Wild Child wages her own one-girl rebellion against the stifling world of adults who just want her to behave! And she brings her friends along! Prepare for the upcoming Toddler Rebellion with Wild Child as your guide! Praise for "A Rule Is To Break: A Child's Guide To Anarchy" - "I love this book -- my children's new favorite. 'A Rule Is To Break' says: go ahead and throw your best self a party! So glad it exists." - Kristin Hersh / musician (Throwing Muses), author ('Rat Girl' and 'Toby Snax'), co-founder of CASH Music, and mom. "How much do I love this idea and its execution? A lot, I tell you." - Julie Danielson / Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast "... A delight to read! A children's book on anarchy seems somehow just right: an instinctive, intuitive sense of fairness, community, and interdependence sits naturally enough with a desire for participatory democracy, feminism, queer-rights, environmental balance, self-determination, and peace and global justice." - Bill Ayers / author ('To Teach: The Journey in Comics' and 'Fugitive Days'), teacher, Barack Obama's alleged terrorist pal, and grandpa. Street Art and Activism in the Greater Caribbean

release date: Sep 06, 2022
Street Art and Activism in the Greater Caribbean
Foregrounding street art in the capital cities of Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico, this book argues that Antillean street artists diagnose the “impossible state” of the arrested present (colonized, occupied, or under dictatorship) while simultaneously imagining liberated futures and fully sovereign states. Jana Evans Braziel launches a comparative study of art, politics, history, urban street cultures, engaged citizenships, and social transformations in three Antillean capital cities—Havana, Cuba; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; and San Juan, Puerto Rico—of the Greater Caribbean. The book includes a photo documentary archive of street art, murals, and installations by key muralists in these cities: Yulier Rodriguez Pérez, "Jerry" Rosembert Moïse, and Colectivo Moriviví (Chachi González Colón, Raysa Rodríguez García, and Salomé Cortés). Braziel offers art historical and geopolitical analyses of the urban street art in their cities of production, underscoring street art as political, economic, and environmental engagements (and not as exclusively aesthetic ones) with urban space and street life. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, Caribbean studies, Latin American studies, and urban studies.

The Rise of International Parliaments

release date: Dec 14, 2020
The Rise of International Parliaments
International parliaments are on the rise. An increasing number of international organizations establishes 'international parliamentary institutions' or IPIs, which bring together members of national parliaments or - in rare cases - elected representatives of member state citizens. Yet, IPIs have generally remained powerless institutions with at best a consultative role in the decision-making process of international organizations. Why do the member states of international organizations create IPIs but do not vest them with relevant institutional powers? This study argues that neither the functional benefits of delegation nor the internalization of democratic norms answer this question convincingly. Rather, IPIs are best understood as an instrument of strategic legitimation. By establishing institutions that mimic national parliaments, governments seek to ensure that audiences at home and in the wider international environment recognize their international organizations as democratically legitimate. At the same time, they seek to avoid being effectively constrained by IPIs in international governance. The Rise of International Parliaments provides a systematic study of the establishment and empowerment of IPIs based on a novel dataset. In a statistical analysis covering the world's most relevant international organizations and a series of case studies from all major world regions, we find two varieties of international parliamentarization. International organizations with general purpose and high authority create and empower IPIs to legitimate their region-building projects domestically. Alternatively, the establishment of IPIs is induced by the international diffusion of democratic norms and prominent templates, above all that of the European Parliament. Transformations in Governance is a major academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, and environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states to supranational institutions, subnational governments, and public-private networks. It brings together work that advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford.

Shifting Sands

release date: Sep 09, 2013
Shifting Sands
This book identifies the many people-skills a project manager needs to make a project successful. While traditional project management training teaches the phases and processes of planning and executing a project, it barely mentions the people skills required to make the project successful. Shifting Sands explains how to build and use people skills during a project, giving real 'world' examples and letting the reader learn from the authors' mistakes instead of their own. Co-authors Bill Berghel, PMP and Jana Markowitz, MS Organizational Psychology, have over 40 years of project management experience between them. For almost any situation a project manager could face, Bill and Jana have "been there, done that" and provide a funny story to illustrate their point. Shifting Sands provides guidance, explanations and how-to's from which even experienced project managers and business leaders will benefit. -- Book cover.

Wabi-Sabi - Photo School
Wabi-Sabi Photo School The Beauty of Photography (Deutsch-English) Wabi-Sabi is a japanese philosophic and aesthetic concept which has touched us in a deep way. With the help of our co-author, japanese artist Natsuko Horinouchi-Podzimek, we created an ebook on how we can avail ourselfes of the aesthetics of Wabi-Sabi for our photography. We see Wabi-Sabi as a way for us european photographers to free ourself from the honey trap technology and perfection-mania set up for us. In Wabi-Sabi, there is room for “mistakes”. The most important in Wabi-Sabi is not the perfect photograph but the expression and depth of the image. On the contrary! It is especially the absence of perfection – e.g. the light flares, the blurs, the haziness, the deep shadows – that transforms a prosaic photography into poetry. At the same time the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi is characterized by reduction, modesty, and a symbiotic relationship to nature. There is a truth behind Wabi-Sabi we always yearned to find in photography. In our e-Book “Wabi-Sabi – The beauty of photography” we show you how this concept can help you finding your very own way of photography which is characterized by more depth, substance, and emotions. Photography is more than just technology and fancy gadgets. We are convinced, that photography is pure passion, inspiration, and a wonderful way to express our emotions. So let yourself be inspired by the philosophy of an ancient culture. Find your very own photographic style with the help of our photographic exercises. How to Fall Out of Love Madly

How to Fall Out of Love Madly
“Three relatable thirty somethings drive this ode to womanhood. Learning the hard way to love themselves, the women teach invaluable lessons.”—People “Everyone who loves Sally Rooney should be reading Jana Casale!”—Julie Buntin, author of Marlena Three women confront the compromises they’ve made to appease the men they love. Joy and Annie are friends and roommates whose thirty-something lives aren’t exactly what they’d imagined. To make ends meet, they decide to rent their extra bedroom to Theo, who charms Joy with his salt-and-pepper hair and adoration of their one-eyed cat. When Annie goes to live with her boyfriend, Theo and Joy settle into a comfortable domesticity. Then Theo brings home Celine, the girlfriend he’s never mentioned, who is possibly the most stunning woman Joy has ever seen. Joy resolves to do whatever it takes to hold on to him, falling ever deeper into an emotional hellscape of her own making. She is too obsessed to realize that Celine’s beauty doesn’t protect her from pain. Haunted by an event from her past, Celine can’t escape her shame and finds herself in an endless cycle of self-sabotage. Annie is baffled by Joy’s senseless devotion to Theo, but she’s consumed by her own obsessions: she can’t stop parsing her commitment-phobic boyfriend’s texts in an exhausting mission to maintain his approval. At work, where she fully embraces her natural assertiveness, Annie is a star. But when an anonymous letter lands on her desk accusing her esteemed and supportive boss of sexual misconduct, she is forced to decide who and what she’s willing to stand up for. Perceptive, mordantly funny, and full of heart, How to Fall Out of Love Madly examines women’s many relationships—with one another, their mothers, their work, men, and themselves—to reveal their underlying power and complexity. It asks, why do so many smart, compassionate, otherwise empowered women tolerate egregious behavior from the men they love? And what will it take for them to reclaim control?

Following His Own Path

Following His Own Path
In this book, Jana S. Rošker offers the first comprehensive overview and exegesis of the work of Li Zehou, who is one of the most significant and influential Chinese philosophers of our time. Rošker shows us how Li's complex system of thought seeks to revive various Chinese traditions, and at the same time attempts to harmonize or reconcile this cultural heritage with the demands of the dominant economic, political, and axiological structures of our globalized world. Variously characterized as "neo-traditional," "neo-Kantian," "post-Marxist," "Marxist-Confucian," "pragmatist," "instrumentalist," "romantic," and more, Li's work was central to the period known as the Chinese Enlightenment in the 1980s and has helped modify and transform antiquated patterns of Chinese intellectual discourse. He is one of the rare Chinese thinkers whose work has not only had a deep and lasting impact on Chinese intellectuals, but has acquired a broad readership outside of China as well. Seen from a broader intercultural perspective, Li's unique and imaginative approach to a wide range of basic theoretical problems has created new styles of intellectual investigation, while reminding us of our belonging to a common humanity, regardless of differences in our individual cultures, languages, preferences, and traditions.

Informal Marriages in Early Modern Venice

Informal Marriages in Early Modern Venice
Conditions of the marriage market and sexual culture, and the needs of wealthy families and their members created social tensions in the late sixteenth and early-seventeenth century Venice. This study details these tensions and discusses concubinage– a long-term, sexual, non-marital union - as an alternate family model that soothed them by meeting the needs of families and individuals in a manner that did not offend the sensibilities of the authorities or other Venetians. Concubinage was quite common, and the Venetian community regularly accepted concubinaries, concubinal relationships, and the offspring concubinage produced.

Prominenti v ghettu Terezín, 1942-1945
The introduction (pp. 7-73), by Helena Krejčová, gives general information on the Terezín ghetto, its creation and its role in Nazi anti-Jewish policy, and then focuses on an analysis of the privileged category of ghetto prisoners. Describes criteria for inclusion in this category (e.g. having a special function in the ghetto administration, nationality, world reputation), ways how being "prominent" affected the prisoner's life (improved housing conditions, temporary or even permanent protection from deportation), as well as the fate of privileged groups. Pp. 84-296 provide a detailed list of 225 "Prominenten" and their personal data, compiled from three sources: the list published in Ralph Oppenhejm's book "An der Grenze des Lebens: Theresienstädter Tagebuch" (1961), the album of "Prominenten" acquired from Kibbutz Givat Haim Ihud, and the central card catalogue of the Jewish Community, Prague, discovered by the editors in 1993.

Posthuman Legal Subjectivity

release date: Aug 12, 2021
Posthuman Legal Subjectivity
This book provides a reimagining of how Western law and legal theory structures the human–earth relationship. As a complement to contemporary efforts to establish rights of nature and non-human legal personhood, this book focuses on the other subject in the human–earth relationship: the human. Critical ecological feminism exposes the dualistic nature of the ideal human legal subject as a key driver in the dynamic of instrumentalism that characterises the human–earth relationship in Western culture. This book draws on conceptual fields associated with the new sciences, including new materialism, posthuman critical theory and Big History, to demonstrate that the naturalised hierarchy of humans over nature in the Western social imaginary is anything but natural. It then sets about constructing a counternarrative. The proposed ‘Cosmic Person’ as alternative, non-dualised human legal subject forges a pathway for transforming the Western cultural understanding of the human–earth relationship from mastery and control to ideal co-habitation. Finally, the book details a case study, highlighting the practical application of the proposed reconceptualisation of the human legal subject to contemporary environmental issues. This original and important analysis of the legal status of the human in the Anthropocene will be of great interest to those working in legal theory, jurisprudence, environmental law and the environmental humanities; as well as those with relevant interests in gender studies, cultural studies, feminist theory, critical theory and philosophy.

Jovial Bigotry

release date: Mar 15, 2012
Jovial Bigotry
This book revisits the debate over manners and morals that raged in France, Britain and the United States in the late nineteenth century. It was in essence a debate about gender and sexuality, and one of the foremost figures in the transnational discussions was the French writer and lecturer Paul Blouet, alias Max O’Rell (1847–1903). Although largely forgotten today, O’Rell deserves remembrance as a major phenomenon of the fin-de-siècle publishing and entertainment world. A Frenchman living in England but catering primarily to the American market, he disseminated national and gender stereotypes in an unprecedented way. Admired for the wit deployed in his lectures and his many best-selling books, he is a colorful exemplar of the many bourgeois commentators, male and female; most of them with mainstream political, social and cultural views, who engaged in these discussions, producing dense webs of assertion and opinion across countries and even continents. The elegant French salonnière, the independent but trustworthy English girl, the bitter American spinster activist meddling in public affairs: these are just a few examples of the many caricatural representations of women thrust into the debate. Max O’Rell and his fellow observers commented on women’s position in family and society, their partnership in the couple, their education, their sexual fulfilment, their right to paid work, aspects of social etiquette, feminism, domestic abuse, adultery and prostitution. There were frequent disagreements and sometimes hostile exchanges, but this analysis of the debate reveals a fundamentally common outlook among its participants: an agreement on patriarchy as the foundation of bourgeois society, and on the necessity to confine women in carefully stereotyped roles.
