A High-bandwidth, Low-latency System for Anonymous Broadcasting
In this thesis,1 we design and evaluate Spectrum, a system for bandwidth efficient, anonymous broadcasting. In this system, one (or more) publishers broadcast a message to many users, who provide cover traffic. These users share their message between two or more servers; as long as one of these is honest, even an adversary with a complete view of the network cannot discover a message’s source. Prior systems require that each user publish a message; however, streaming media tends to have many consumers for every content producer. We take advantage of this for a large performance improvement. To do so, we provide a cryptographic solution to the disruption problem, where dishonest users can corrupt a message by writing noise. This solution provides access control for operations performed obliviously by the servers. Spectrum is 60x faster than prior work for moderate-sized messages (10 kB), Each client uploads under 1 kB of additional data to broadcast a message of any size. Using a two-server deployment, Spectrum is fast enough to broadcast 3.4 GB/h to 600 users or streaming video to 5,000 users. Further, we can shard Spectrum across many physical servers for commensurate speedup, scaling a given workload to many more users.

Assessing the Peer-teaching Quality and Stategies of Medical Students Within the Human Gross Anatomy Laboratory During Reciprocal Peer-teaching

Assessing the Peer-teaching Quality and Stategies of Medical Students Within the Human Gross Anatomy Laboratory During Reciprocal Peer-teaching
Background:Anatomy education in medical school curricula has faced a reduction in course hours. Vulnerable as well is the hands-on dissection component. Reciprocal Peer Teaching (RPT) has been implemented in medical schools as the pedagogy to combat the reduction in anatomy course hours, while still allowing medical students to gain hands-on participation in dissection-based gross anatomy. RPT has two main roles associated with it, the peer teacher and peer learner. In this edition of the course in fall 2020, due to COVID-19, the third role of non-participant was formed due to limitations on student numbers allowed within the classroom. While prior studies have measured the impact of the pedagogy overall on student performance and in comparison to non-RPT anatomy courses, the inner workings of the success of the pedagogy have yet to be examined. The purpose of this study was two-fold, 1) investigate the actual episodes of peer teaching during RPT and 2) assess the peer teaching skills of medical students during RPT in the gross anatomy laboratory. Insights gained from this dissertation study indicate that the role associated with peer teaching sessions is highly influential. Peer teachers were found to be four times more likely to correctly answer exam questions than peer learners. Further the overall teaching quality across the entirety of the Gross Anatomy course was found to be of low quality and did not improve across the three-block exams of content. Additionally, medical students during peer teaching did not fully utilize their designated peer teaching time of 15 minutes at the beginning of each new lab. On average, only about 8 minutes of time was dedicated to peer teaching sessions. The implications from this study are that more structure and weight (in the form of assessment or professionalism) needs to be attached to peer teaching in this context.
