Refrigeration systems employing the NH3-H2O absorption cycle provide cooling using a thermal energy input. This cycle relies on the zeotropic nature of the refrigerant - absorbent pair: because of the difference in boiling temperatures between NH3 and H2O, they can be separated through selective boiling in the desorber. Desorbers with counter-current flow of the solution and generated vapor enable efficient heat and mass transfer between the two phases, reducing the absorbent content in the generated vapor. Flow visualization experiments at temperatures, concentrations and pressures representative of operating conditions are necessary to understand the heat and mass transfer processes and flow regime characteristics within the component. In this study, a Flooded Column desorber, which accomplishes desorption of the refrigerant vapor through a combination of falling-film and pool boiling, was fabricated and tested. Refrigerant-rich solution enters the top of the component and fills a column, which is heated by an adjacent heated microchannel array. The vapor generated within the component is removed from the top of the component, while the dilute solution drains from the bottom. Flow visualization experiments showed that the Flooded Column desorber operated most stably in a partially flooded condition, with a pool-boiling region below a falling-film region. It was found that the liquid column level was dependent on operating conditions, and that the pool-boiling region exhibits aggressive mixing between the vapor and solution phases. Heat transfer coefficients were calculated from the data for the pool-boiling region, and were compared with the predictions of several mixture pool-boiling correlations from the literature. The correlations from the literature were in general unable to predict the data from this study adequately. It was found that the Flooded Column desorber yielded higher heat transfer coefficients within the pool-boiling region than those predicted by these correlations. Therefore, modifications to existing mixture boiling correlations are suggested based on the findings of this study. The resulting modified correlation predicts 33 of the 35 data points from this study within ±40%, with an average absolute error of 19%.

Commonly, in environmental and ecological populations, neighboring units within a finite population may provide similar information. In an attempt to obtain the most informative picture of a population, researchers may not want to collect information from similar units within the obtained sample. Moreover, when sampling from such populations, the selection of dispersed units may result in a reduction in the variance of estimators. Hedayat, Rao, and Stufken (1988a and 1988b) introduced balanced sampling designs for the exclusion of contiguous units. Under the assumption that contiguous units provided similar information, finite populations of N units arranged in a circular, one-dimensional ordering were considered. Sampling plans that excluded the selection of contiguous units within a given sample, while maintaining a constant second-order inclusion probability for non-contiguous units, were investigated. Stufken (1993) extended the ideas of balanced sampling avoiding contiguous units to balanced sampling avoiding adjacent units-units that are within [alpha] spaces of each other-from circularly ordered populations and provided necessary conditions for the existence of such sampling plans. In this paper, two direct search algorithms for identifying generators of cyclical balanced sampling plans excluding adjacent units from circularly ordered populations are detailed. Generators for plans with [alpha]=1 and n[less than or equal to]15 and with [alpha]=2 and 3 with n[less than or equal to]10 are presented, including the first known sets of generators of plans for n[greater than or equal to]9 with [alpha]=1, n[greater than or equal to]6 with [alpha]=2, and n[greater than or equal to]5 with [alpha]=3. Furthermore, the necessary conditions for existence of balanced sampling plans excluding adjacent units from circularly ordered populations are shown to be sufficient for n=5 and 6 with [alpha]=1, n=3, 4, and 5 with [alpha]=2, and n=3 and 4 with [alpha]=3. Techniques for obtaining supports of balanced sampling plans excluding adjacent units from linearly ordered populations using plans from circularly ordered populations, and vice versa, are also presented. In addition, various sampling schemes involving balanced sampling plans excluding adjacent units from circularly ordered populations and variance approximation techniques are compared through a simulation study.

This research investigated the miniaturization of a novel heat transfer enhancement technique. The technique, using alternating magnetic fields to influence a ferromagnetic particle laden fluid, was demonstrated to be effective on conventional scales using an oil based suspension, increasing the coefficient of heat transfer, h, by 260%. In order to determine the viability of this enhancement technique at smaller scales using a water based suspension, an experimental apparatus was designed to measure the coefficient of convective heat transfer in mini- and micro-scale flows. Water based suspensions of ferromagnetic particles were pumped through a 1.1 mm diameter heated tube. External alternating magnetic fields acted on the suspension, causing the particles to be attracted to and then released from the heat transfer surface. The efficacy of this enhancement technique was determined by comparing the heat transfer coefficients between enhanced and non-enhanced trials, while also considering the resulting increase in pressure loss. Dispersions of Fe and Fe304 particles were used during experimentation.
