Boswell i Holland 1763-1764

release date: Sep 01, 2017
Boswell i Holland 1763-1764

The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (Dodo Press)

The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (Dodo Press)
James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck and 1st Baronet (1740-1795) was a lawyer, diarist, and author born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His name has passed into the English language as a term (Boswell, Boswellian, Boswellism) for a constant companion and observer. He is best known as Samuel Johnson''s biographer, and is also known for the detailed and frank journals that he wrote for long periods of his life, which remained undiscovered until the 1920s. These included voluminous notes on the grand tour of Europe that he took as a young nobleman and, subsequently, of his tour of Scotland with Johnson. When The Life of Samuel Johnson was published in 1791 it at once commanded the admiration that Boswell had sought for so long, and it has suffered no diminution since. Its style was revolutionary - unlike other biographies of that era it directly incorporated conversations that Boswell had noted down at the time for his journals. In addition to his journals and major biography, Boswell also wrote a prominent display of support for the slavery movement: No Abolition of Slavery; or, The Universal Empire of Love (1791).

The Life of Johnson
Samuel Johnson is famously known for single-handedly creating the first recognized dictionary of the English language, just one of many his many renowned accomplishments. The biography of this remarkable writer, dramatist, poet, and moralist was penned by his friend, James Boswell, in 1791. An immediate success upon its publication, this work has come to be considered the greatest biography produced in the English language, and has earned Boswell the reputation as a wonderfully sharp and methodical artist of the biography. The wealth of detail and charming characterization of Johnson can be attributed to Boswell''s diligent journal-keeping and excellent memory. He often initiated psychologically probing conversations to explore Johnson''s character. He also collected a mass of letters to and about Johnson, and worked diligently to authenticate anecdotes about the man. The result of these efforts is a charming and accurate portrait of a literary idol. This edition follows the popular abridgment of Charles Grosvenor Osgood and is printed on premium acid-free paper.

An Account of Corsica; The Journal of a Tour to That Island; and Memoirs of Pascal Paoli
James Boswell, most famous for his biography of Samuel Johnson, also wrote an account of his travels in Corsica in the mid-18th century. In addition to describing the landscape, people, and customs of the island, he also became an enthusiastic supporter of the Corsican independence movement led by Pascal Paoli. This book is an intriguing blend of travelogue and political treatise, told in Boswell''s convivial and engaging style. With the benefit of hindsight, it is also interesting to see how this work foreshadowed some of the themes and ideas that Boswell would explore more fully in his later writing.
