The method by which health care is managed and administered has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Over the last ten years, optometry has become increasingly more involved in contracting with third party vision care plans. The influence of managed care on the practice of optometry has resulted in the transfer patient utilization control, mode of reimbursement, and patient satisfaction from the practitioner to plan administrators. If the design and marketing of the plan is effective, the practitioner will no longer be dependent upon national managed vision care plans for patient volume. A small business employer can utilize the plan to improve recruitment, increase retention, and productivity of current and prospective employees. The employees have the opportunity to access comprehensive eyecare in a professional environment without restrictions or regulations on services or materials.
