Effect of a 7-week Rock Climbing Class on Physical Fitness and Performance

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Effect of a 7-week Rock Climbing Class on Physical Fitness and Performance
The purpose of this study was to assess changes in physical fitness and performance by rock climbing twice a week over a 7-week time period. Rock climbing is on the rise in popularity as seen in the rise of indoor climbing gyms and the increase in rock climbing competitions. Notably, the International Federation of Sport Climbing has held the Climbing World Championships biennially since the first event in 1991, which emphasizes the importance of this research to apply to training programs. To better understand the sport of rock climbing a variety of tests were used to assess physical fitness and performance. The tests included grip strength, grip endurance, pinch strength, the sum of 7-site skinfold thicknesses, percent body fat, upper body aerobic power and time to complete a graded route on the climbing wall. 16 subjects, 3 females and 13 males, who were enrolled in a 7-week rock climbing course at Western Michigan University participated in the study. Significant improvements were observed in right hand grip endurance, left hand grip endurance , right hand pinch strength, pinch strength average, and timed climb, or time to the top of a graded route. It was concluded that 7-weeks of rock climbing twice a week showed improvements in some physical fitness and performance variables.

The Ghosts of Horseshoe Bend

release date: Jan 01, 2014
The Ghosts of Horseshoe Bend
This research explores the various and often conflicting interpretations of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, an event seemingly lost in the public mind of twenty-first century America. The conflict, which pitted United States forces under the command of Major General Andrew Jackson against a militant offshoot of the Creek Confederacy, known as the Redsticks, ranks as the single most staggering loss of life in annals of American Indian warfare. Today, exactly 200 years after the conflict, the legacy of Horseshoe Bend stands as an obscure and often unheard of event. Drawing upon over two centuries of unpublished archival data, newspapers, and political propaganda, this research argues that the dominate narrative of Northern history, the shadowy details of the War of 1812, and the erasure of shameful events from the legacy of westward expansion have all contributed to transform what once was a battle of epic proportions, described by Jackson himself as an "extermination," into a seemingly forgotten affair.

Between Two Gazes: Kubrick's Alienating Aesthetic

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Between Two Gazes: Kubrick's Alienating Aesthetic
"In his explanation of 2001: A Space Odyssey’s concluding “Stargate” sequence, Stanley Kubrick privileges its psychological and affective aspects, stating that “[the concluding sequence’s] meaning has to be found on a sort of psychological level rather than in a specific literal interpretation” (qtd. in Grant 81-82). Expanded beyond this film and into Kubrick’s corpus altogether, his films largely display an emphasis on the psychological impacts they have over spectators. More specifically, Kubrick’s films have been described as cold cinematic texts that resist emotional engagement (Kolker, “Rage for Order” 60; Freer 114). Consider 2001’s Stargate sequence --in which a series of chromatic images appear onscreen at random with no obvious narrative purpose or explanation --as exemplary of the emotional estrangement underlying Kubrick’s films. Conventional narrative cinema provides clear-cut narratives that allow méconnaissance (or misrecognition) to occur in the cinema, during which spectators immerse themselves into the film’s narrative verisimilitude; but Kubrick’s films resist this by thwarting such expectations --as is evident in the convoluted Stargate sequence --to create an alienating aesthetic unique to the Kubrickian corpus. Psychologically, Kubrick’s cinema alienates spectators from identifying with his narratives, which consequently thwarts emotional identification from spectators. In order to theorize this trend from a psychoanalytical perspective, I explore the convergence of two conflicting Lacanian film theories --an earlier version which resists méconnaissance and the latter version which alternatively requests that theorists use misrecognition to observe moments when their immersion is disrupted --occurring throughout Kubrick’s films. There is a marked discordance between conventional narrative structures and Kubrick’s deconstruction of them, one which shall be explored in this thesis to illustrate the various ways in which Kubrick’s alienating aesthetic is manifested, particularly in A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, and 2001: A Space Odyssey"-- from abstract.

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Unaccompanied Refugee Minors and Their Strategies to Navigate a New World
This study explored how unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) define success. The population of URMs consists of individuals who, through forced migration from their country of origin, were resettled in the United States through the URM program. Little is known about the ways in which refugee adolescents view the resettlement process once they have left the URM program. Through a traditional grounded theory method, 15 interviews with former URMs were conducted with the aim of laying the groundwork for a theory that would explain how success is defined, the unique challenges URMs face, the mechanisms for overcoming challenges, and the role that culture plays in the resettlement process.

Response of Weeds to the Intensification of Kansas No-Till Crop Rotations with Cover Cropping

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Response of Weeds to the Intensification of Kansas No-Till Crop Rotations with Cover Cropping
No-till producers can manage weeds by including cover crops during the fallow phase as part of an integrated weed management plan. Field experiments were conducted between 2007 and 2009 to quantify the influence of cover crops on weed emergence, biomass accumulation, and seed production. Field experiments were established near Garden City, KS with winter wheat or fallow as main plots and cover crop treatments as subplots including five spring- and five fall-sown individual or mixtures of crop species and a no-cover chemical fallow. Separate1-m2 quadrats were seeded with kochia or downy brome at 500 seed/m2. Kochia density was reduced by 75% and biomass reduced by 88% in fall-sown cover crops compared to chemical fallow across growing seasons. Spring-sown cover crop mixtures reduced kochia biomass in 2009 when kochia emergence was delayed. Downy brome biomass decreased exponentially as cover crop biomass increased. A second field experiment was established near Manhattan, KS with soybean, winter wheat, or grain sorghum phases of the rotation as main plots and six cover crop treatments as subplots sown after winter wheat harvest. Paired Palmer amaranth 1-m2 quadrats were seeded with 500 seed/m2 in each cover crop subplot. One quadrat was protected from any herbicide application made to the cover crop or to the grain sorghum. Combining burndown application with high biomass-producing cover crops reduced Palmer amaranth emergence and biomass. Influence of cover crop presence reduced early season Palmer amaranth emergence in the subsequent grain sorghum phase. Optimal seeding rate of forage soybean sown in winter wheat stubble and its impact on Palmer amaranth and downy brome emergence and growth were evaluated in field studies established near Manhattan and Hesston, KS in 2008 and 2009. Soybean was no-till drilled after wheat harvest at five rates ranging from 100,000 to 600,000 seeds/ha. A no-cover chemical fallow treatment was included. Separate 0.5-m2 quadrats were seeded with Palmer amaranth at 100 seed/0.5 m2 or with downy brome at 250 seed/0.5 m2. Three termination methods evaluated were killing frost, glyphosate application, or crop rolling. Palmer amaranth density was not affected by treatments but biomass decreased as soybean seeding rate and crop biomass increased. Downy brome emergence was less with rolled or sprayed termination methods in one site year as timing of termination was optimal. High biomass producing cover crops sown during the fallow phase of a crop rotation reduced weed emergence, density, and biomass accumulation. Cover crops can be part of an integrated weed management plan in Kansas.
