Sexing the Prairie - Male domination over female instincts in Martha Ostenso's "Wild Geese"

Sexing the Prairie - Male domination over female instincts in Martha Ostenso's "Wild Geese"
Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, course: Early Twentieth-Century Canadian Novels , language: English, abstract: [...] Martha Ostenso writes in the realistic tradition, leaving behind the idyllic Romances of the turn of the century and applying modern psychological assumptions to the conceptions of her characters. In this respect Wild Geese combines on the one hand an authentic social picture of rural prairie life, and on the other hand the mystical spirituality embodied by the female heroine. The questions raised in this work focus on the relationship between man and women in the novel and on their symbolic presentation as struggling forces of contrasting natures. Most critics perceive the prairie landscape itself as a symbol of femininity mirroring the rebellion of the heroine against the domination of her father. The central question to be examined will be that of Ostenso’s understanding of the female and the male. In section 2 of this work, realistic aspects of the novel will be analysed in order to gain an insight into the narrative structure of the novel. Three aspects are of special importance for this paper starting with the authentic description of the prairie as habitat, turning towards the disfiguring of the Romantic hero in realistic writing and finally focussing on the emancipation of women in the Canadian West. Since the characters in prairie realism are presented as the extension of the landscape, this section is the indispensable preparatory step for the closer analysis of the male and female gender descriptions. The third section deals with the main characters ofWild Geeseand their relationships among each other, investigating, in particular, those traits of character, which Ostenso presents as typical for their gender. Furthermore, the influences of Modernism on Ostenso will become obvious in this analysis, as she makes use of psychological conclusions of Sigmund Freud and the intertextual reference to classical mythology. In section 4, the two alternatives of female liberation shown by Ostenso are set into context with the preceding plot and narrative structure of the novel completing the question about the relationships among men and women. In the conclusive section, the gender-typical features as perceived by Martha Ostenso should have become evident, so that the battle between the sexes as well as its symbolic level of nature against domination will be fully unfolded in the end. All citations from Martha Ostenso’s Wild Geese are gathered from the 1989 edition by McClelland and Stewart and are endued with the corresponding page number.

Her Vampire Knight

Her Vampire Knight
This little panther shifter thinks she’s captured me. Me; one of the most feared vampires in history. I like the feel of her claws, so I’ll stay put. I like the heat of her flesh in my hands, so I’ll let her think she has a hold on me. I like the sweet taste of her lips, the ones above and below her belt, so I’m more than happy to keep her sassy mouth occupied. What I can’t do is penetrate that most sacred part of her. I’m a massive goliath. She’s a wee kitten. I’d split her in two. Doesn’t mean I can’t pet her and make her purr. The problem is, the more she rubs her lush curves against me, the more the beast below stirs, ready to claim her untouched heat. I can’t let it go that far. If I do, it will surely break us both.

Turner and the Elements

Turner and the Elements
A painter of the elements, J. M. W. Turner depicted in his landscapes natural forces such as wind, fire, and water with an emphasis on their considerable destructive power and man''s raw vulnerability in the face of it. And be they storm scenes, avalanches, or disasters at sea, Turner''s oil paintings and watercolors were also informed by contemporary research in the natural sciences. Conceived by the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg and edited by leading Turner experts, this volume comprises eighty-five masterpieces from the Tate Gallery in London that are also scheduled for the National Museum in Krakow and the UK''s newly opened Turner Contemporary. The works presented here exemplify Turner''s extensive knowledge of nature and the impact of its forces, garnered from a lifelong fascination, and show that important developments in the artist''s technique over the course of several decades mirrored the many new scientific insights of the time. Especially significant is Turner''s stunningly realistic depiction of light, which made many of his canvases seem to actually glow. With 150 lush, full-color illustrations, this volume shows how Turner''s ever-deepening understanding of the natural world--and of light in particular--earned him his place in the pantheon of great European artists.

Beautiful New Sky

Beautiful New Sky
It was a bold, ambitious and wildly arrogant idea: extending the reach of communism into space. Spurred on by the defeat of Hitler and the competitive rivalry with the United States, the Soviet space programme saw a frenetic surge of scientific activity focused on the objective of demonstrating Communist mastery beyond the confines of the Earth. In order to create the optimally standardized bodies that cosmonauts would require, top secret military laboratories were set up in 1970s East Germany. The New Man – the modern colonist of space – was intensively trained for the purpose of surviving years of weightlessness in outer space. Experiments were carried out in prisons, hospitals and army barracks with the aim of creating the perfect body: self-sufficient and able to endure extreme conditions for as long as possible. In order to exert dominance over space, it was first necessary to exert total control over those who were being trained to conquer it. Ines Geipel unravels this largely unknown and extraordinary history by delving into East German military records and talking to those who bear the scars of this state-inflicted trauma. Some of the older scientists conducting experiments had already served under the Nazi regime; others threw themselves into collaborating with the Stasi via the military research programme in order to avoid dealing with the war’s emotional legacy. Written like a thriller and infused with empathy from someone who had herself experienced the debilitating effects of state-administered doping programmes in the former GDR, this book exposes some of the most disturbing episodes in Germany’s recent past.

ANATOMY & LIP ENHANCEMENT

ANATOMY & LIP ENHANCEMENT
Our 360 degrees approach to lip enhancement Due to their complexity, the structure and function of the orbicularis oris muscle particularly caught our attention. This unusual circular muscle around the buccal opening, which is not attached to any bone, consists of intertwined fibres that simultaneously act as a dilator and a sphincter. Moreover, the peripheral fibres of this muscle are interlaced with the peribuccal muscles enabling the infinite variations of facial expressiveness. It is essential to understand all of these elements so that they are rigorously safeguarded when undergoing the various type of treatment we can offer. The second common thread in our book is based on highly practical aspects of the various procedures being proposed. From working environment and preparation of the equipment through well whether anaesthesia is indicated and what operating technique is recommended, the contributors have described their personal technical preferences in a context of consistency in this collective effort. Thus we have addressed lip rejuvenation and augmentation with the same balance. Although most of the authors routinely use hyaluronic acid in the course of treatment, it seems to us indispensable to pay special attention to techniques based on the grafting of adipose tissue. The use of adipose tissue, which demands mastery of surgical techniques, has shown itself to be efficient and holds yet more potential in many applications because of the way in which this type of tissue develops in situ after fat grafting. Physicians and surgeons involved in the lip enhancement are working to the same end. We should know all about the sites where we make our injections and to need to analyse with rigour the objective established together with the patient. We all have to take into account the natural balance of the various volumes when remodelling lips to ensure a pretty smile that brings pleasure all around. In this, as in other areas, modesty and caution are the watchwords. In writing and publishing this work Expert 2 Expert attempts to build a bridge between the anatomical knowledge essential to our praxis and the routine practice of lip enhancement procedures. Differences in Labour Law between Germany and Canada

release date: Sep 07, 2024
Differences in Labour Law between Germany and Canada
This book offers a comparative insight into the labour law systems of Germany and Canada, two countries with different legal traditions and approaches. It examines how in Germany a highly centralised system with clear legal requirements offers employees extensive rights and protections, while Canada has a decentralised, more flexible structure of labour law due to its federal structure. Particular emphasis is placed on the federal principle in Canada, where the provinces and territories set their own labour law standards. This decentralisation leads to considerable differences in regulations on minimum wages, working hours, protection against dismissal and holiday entitlements - depending on the region in question. The book shows the consequences of this diversity and highlights the advantages, such as adaptability to regional needs, but also the challenges associated with this legal fragmentation, such as the difficulty of enforcing the law and the mobility of workers. The detailed comparison shows how strongly employee rights in Germany are protected by statutory regulations and collective co-determination, while in Canada greater flexibility for employers and a stronger role for individual employment contracts dominate. This work is aimed at those affected and anyone wishing to gain a sound understanding of the differences and similarities between these two systems - and how these differences influence the dynamics of labour markets, the relationship between employers and employees and social security in both countries.

Endless Biomimicry Habitat

Endless Biomimicry Habitat
The approach to the habitat as an entity inscribed in nature and exemplified by a review of the work of Frederick Kiesler, architect and artist, is especially timely due to the moment of crisis that contemporary architecture is going through. Also, the delicate situation of our planet Earth, where destructive constructions, market processes, artificial materials and a myriad of economic and social circumstances have led to the decline of resources and an unsustainable system in many areas. Problems, such as climatic changes or buildings far from their surroundings. Reading and understanding this artist it is appreciated how his concerns are really a current issue and he provides us with a lot of information to global needs. By understanding his texts and philosophies throughout this book, they will make you a participant in this new conception of what "being" or inhabiting a house refers to. A habitat relating spatial qualities that exemplifies with architectural interdisciplinarity.

Patient engagement in healthcare: a preliminary set of measures to evaluate patient engagement in the European Reference Networks

Patient engagement in healthcare: a preliminary set of measures to evaluate patient engagement in the European Reference Networks
Aim: The European Reference Networks (ERNs) provide clinicians and patients the opportunity to collaborate at EU level to improve diagnosis, care and treatment for people living with rare and complex conditions. However, building a partnership culture to systematically involve patients in ERN activities and decision-making structures is challenging, partly because the role of patient representatives and the value of this collaboration are not always understood. The objective of this project was to develop an evaluation framework to assess the impact of patient engagement in the ERNs and to provide evidence on the value of patient-clinician partnership. Methods: The evaluation was developed by EURORDIS and patient representatives involved in the ERNs (ePAG advocates) through a participatory and iterative process. The work was organised in three different phases: (1) clarify roles and identify common goals for ePAG advocates’ engagement in the ERNs; (2) define a set of measures; and (3) test the measures in three different ePAGs (European Patient Advocacy Groups). Results: The project allowed developing a common understanding among ePAG advocates of their role and goals in the ERNs and defining a patient-driven evaluation framework to assess their level of engagement in the ERNs’ activities and how effectively they were working to fulfil their role. Conclusion: Engaging with ERN clinicians to refine the framework would probably render it more relevant to the reality and priorities of the specific ERNs and more valuable as a tool to build a strong partnership culture. Such an evaluation framework could be integrated into the ERNs’ quality improvement system to ensure that the networks’ activities are driven by and remain responsive to patients’ needs.

The basics of teamwork [Hausarbeit plus Präsentation]

The basics of teamwork [Hausarbeit plus Präsentation]
Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0 (A), , language: English, abstract: At the moment teamwork is a very popular term. People say, that it is nowadays essential for being successful in business to be a teamworker, a teamplayer. But what exactly is a team and what makes teamwork special? Several books and the internet helped me to gather relevant information in order to answer this question. Worldwide markets have changed enormously in the last two decades. Globalisation and liberalisation on the one hand and saturated markets on the other hand have led to high quality standards and customer orientation. In addition to that product life cycles have shortened, so that companies are under pressure to develop more new products and product variations in less time to reasonable costs. The need for more flexibilty and the necessity to adapt quickly to changing market conditions involved a reduction of layers in the management. One of the results is more responsibility for the employees. Not only that they become more and more involved in the decision making process, they also have to meet higher expectations as the tasks become increasingly more complex. It seems obvious that at a certain point one person alone can not handle difficult tasks any longer, especially if high financial and economic risks are associated. Therefore a rising number of companies forms teams. This essay focuses on aspects a team leader has to consider if he or she gets the task to start a team from scratch. While the first chapter has given a short introduction, the second chapter defines teamwork and the steps on the way from a mere group towards a team. Then the third chapter examines conditions under which teams can prosper and perform outstandingly. After that the fifth chapter gives a short summary and allows an outlook. The last three chapters contain a list of vocabulary, references and a test, where you can find out what kind of teamplayer you are.
