This chapter provides a brief overview of international terrorism, including domestic and international responses to the phenomenon. This approach includes a discussion of laws. treaties, intelligence, and military-led activities. The chapter also delineates some of the possibilities for the future of international terrorism.

In this article, the author reviews the process by which the National Institute of Justice, the largest funder of criminological and criminal justice research in the United States, operates in the adjudication, dissemination, and monitoring of research grants. I also analyze the functions of social science analysts/grant managers and the role of potential and actual grantees. By funding the bulk of research on criminal justice, the institute plays a key role in linking research to current policy issues and in shaping the direction that the field takes. This analysis is based on my experience working in the agency for the Office of Research and Evaluation, as well as a review of relevant academic research.

This article reviews the scholarly research that has been conducted on the problem of correctional officer (CO) deviance. It then outlines the most dominant kinds of CO deviance and the solutions that have been proposed and, in part, implemented. In so doing, the author provides a typology of the categories of deviance and the variety of controls. The researcher concludes with several recommendations on how these findings might be utilized to further the research on this subject.

To ensure consistency, paper manufacturing requires knowledge of the thickness, areal density, and moisture content of a paper sheet as it is produced. In this thesis, I show that it is possible to use terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to estimate these three parameters. I relate the electromagnetic response of paper to its composition based on an effective medium model that includes an additional term to account for Rayleigh scattering. I show results from Monte Carlo simulations that establish statistical limits on the parameter estimates for this model under realistic conditions, and I assess the performance of the model using experimental results on pulp samples. Finally, I discuss current limitations to the precision of this measurement technique, and suggest methods for improving it.
