An incredible true coming-of-age story In 1938, eighteen-year-old Phyllis Ellsworth packs her bags, says goodbye to her anxious parents and sets off from her quiet seaside home for the Hackney Hospital in London''s bustling East End, where she is to fulfill her dream to train as a nurse. At first, it is a whirlwind of long days, hard work, new friends and plenty of mischief, but just ten months later Britain declares war on Germany and life at the hospital is transformed. Phyll''s days become an endless cycle of air-raid sirens, injured servicemen and anxiously waiting for news of loved ones. And when she falls in love with a handsome young solider, Alistair, Phyll''s work provides the only distraction from worrying about his safety. Bandaging the Blitz is a true story of coming-of-age in terrible times, of the blossoming of first romance into a life-long love affair, and of a young woman whose eagerness to do good in the world brought her suddenly face-to-face with death and drama in all its many guises.

Ian Ross offers a welcome change of perspective. He spent his career as a senior executive in two controversial industrial sectors - tobacco and oil - and necessarily sees the world through the lens of business. The West and the Rest examines what he gained that we can learn from.

Two Big Differences

Two Big Differences
Zinaida Bondarenko is returning to Odessa, Ukraine from Detroit, USA, with one companion, Valentine Pechenko, a Ukrainian-American who is in love with her. Zina came to Detroit in search of her mother, met Valinka (Valentine), and forged a strange relationship with him. Now Zina-as Valinka ends up calling her-has been deported. Upon their return to Odessa, they are greeted by her father and a country at the brink of war with Russia. It''s 2014, and the Euromaidan Movement is underway in Kiev. Odessa appears to be taking her usual unique path.On May 2nd, 2014, the worst violent event in Odessa since the Great Patriotic War (World War II) took place in the fire in the Building of Trade Unions along Kulikovo Field. This event will bring Zina''s and Valinka''s journeys to an end. It will both unite and divide Odessa. It will show how even Odessa, long thought to be "not Ukraine" because of the language (most Odessans still speak Russian), must decide on her identity.

Tears in Heaven

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Tears in Heaven
TEARS IN HEAVEN is for those who desire the truth and have retained the potential to search for it. Illuminati conspiracy? New World Order (NWO)? Skull and Bones Society and the Bohemian Club? What is the link between ancient Egypt and the Pharaohs with early Christiality and the Church''s cover-up today? You have read the fiction (or near fiction) in the likes of "The da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown and "Holy Blood Holy Grail" by Michael Baigent. Now it''s time to get the facts from archeologist and historian Ian Vayro. You won''t be disappointed. Very few people, Christian and non-Christian, know why they are here on earth or where they are headed. Two thousand years of institutional religion has been less than successful at remedying this situation, simply planting seeds of further uncertainty and confusion. In the past, the Church has been accepted as the arbitrator and authority on theology and learning but the facade is now falling apart as an absolute multitude of lies and deceptions are continually exposed. Despite a mandate of helping the people of this planet, the cleverly veneered assurance of the Church under a guise of ''goodness'', have served only to create distrust, disharmony and religious wars. There is a reason that conflict is occurring.

The Third Colour

release date: Apr 01, 2021
The Third Colour
The Third Colour features two ancient spirits who have been reborn repeatedly. With each rebirth, the two must relearn everything, from their own names to basic vocabulary. They must also relearn, and relate to each other through allegorical tales, the history of the land where they find themselves. And this time, the spirits are reborn as two Indigenous women, Agatu and Head Full of Lice, who are forced to revisit the history of Indigenous-settler relations in Canada. Ian Ross employs humour, anger, and a finely-honed sense of the absurd to tackle the colonialism, trauma, and the disconnect between settlers and Indigenous peoples. How do we bridge the two worlds? Or should we? Is it better, Head Full of Lice asks, to burn it all down and start fresh? Or can we, as Agatu hopes, reconcile?

Growing Pains at the Transportation Security Administration

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Growing Pains at the Transportation Security Administration
Since September 11, 2001, the United States has significantly revamped the ways and means used to provide and insure national security against terrorist attacks. Key legislation included the PATRIOT Act (signed October 2001) and its revision, the USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 (passed March 2006), which created new rules on domestic surveillance and detention; the Homeland Security Act (signed November 2002), which established the Department of Homeland Security (DHS); and the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (passed November 2001), which created the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).In order to contextualize the growth and development of the controversial security-related TSA policies and practices over the past six years, this chapter follows a relatively simple chronology, tracing the events that passengers might experience from getting to an airport to deplaning. It then briefly reviews the different kinds of theories of bureaucratic decision making that are applied to policy making, and concludes that to all intents and purposes, the TSA has been operating on an incremental decision-making basis.

(Mis)Representing Corrections

release date: Jan 01, 2014
(Mis)Representing Corrections
The correctional system in the United States and elsewhere suffers from numerous problems (Welch, 1996, Austin and Irwin, 2001). One of the most important issues is that it is hard to obtain accurate information about corrections, incarceration, and prisoners. Consequently, many falsehoods, myths, misconceptions, misrepresentations, and stereotypes about this field have been developed by individuals, organizations, and institutions. To address this problem, I identify the common myths of corrections, review the most important cultural industries that are responsible for developing the misconceptions, and provide appropriate examples from the respective industries that demonstrate how the myths are used. To do this, it is necessary to situate this endeavor in an appropriate epistemology. I use the radical/critical perspective, which I believe best informs this topic. In this chapter, I explore the importance of mythmaking about crime, criminal justice, and corrections; look at why myths are successful; examine the important role of cultural industries, such as fashion, advertising, documentaries, fictional treatments, motion pictures, and the mass media/news media; and offer some concluding thoughts about remedying this problem.

A Comparitive Study Between the Fuel Efficiencies of Hybrid and Conventional Automotive Propulsion Systems
Compare the fuel efficiency of hybrid automobiles to conventional automobiles for an urban and a highway driving scenario. Overall, there are two main purposes for this study. One is to test whether the hybrid automobile, both in the virtual and real experiments, achieves a greater efficiency compared to a conventional automobile. The second is to determine if the control strategy behind a hybrid system significantly affects the fuel efficiency of the system.

Cambrian Microfossils of the Tethyan Himalaya

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Cambrian Microfossils of the Tethyan Himalaya
The Parahio Valley hosts the type section of the Parahio Formation, a unit that occurs widely in the Tethyan Himalaya. Recent revision and recollection of trilobites from multiple horizons within this unit show that it spans the latest part of State 4 and much of Stage 5 of the Cambrian Period. Broadly coeval Parahio Formation deposits occur in the Zanskar Valley some 150 km to the northwest. A variety of small shelly fossils have been recovered by acid dissolution of carbonate beds within the Parahio Formation from both these sections, and these are described herein. They include tetract and pentact sponge spicules belonging to hexactinellid sponges, chancelloriid spicules belonging to Chancelloria sp. and new species of Archiasterella , A. n. sp., shells of a helcionelloid comparable to Igorella maidipingensis , the hyolithid-like Cuptittheca , sp., a poorly preserved hyolithid, a meraspid trilobite that may belong to ptychopariid, and an assortment of spinose microfossils of uncertain affinity. No conodont or paraconodont specimens were recovered, in contrast to an earlier report of microfossils from one horizon at this locality, and inspection of those earlier reported micofossils suggest that they may have been detached chancelloriid spicules. These newly recovered microfossils are consistent with the trilobite-based middle Cambrian age determination for these formations and are inconsistent with the late Cambrian age for the top of the Parahio Formation in its type section by some earlier workers. Individual small shelly fossils taxa show variable ranges within the section, and lie within known stratigraphic ranges for comparable forms known from sections elsewhere in the world. The newly described species A. n. sp. provides the first biostratigraphic link for the Parahio Formation between the Parahio and Zanskar Valleys.
