The Fractured Court

release date: Apr 09, 2023
The Fractured Court
The world shattered after the War of Ruin. There was hatred running so deep within the seams of this world, it seemed beyond repair. Kyra wanted this world to be a better place for her brother, but she was just one girl. A thief, doing her best to give her little brother the life she never had. But every life mattered. Whether demon, Fae, human or... A Fallen. Fallen hadn''t been seen in over six centuries, why would one be here now? Why would he come to the Human Court? He knew the truth. He must have. The truth no one else saw, the truth only Kyra had figured out. The witches were brewing something in the heart of the Human Court, something worse than the war that took the dragons, worse than the war that shattered the world. This time, they would take everything, but if she truly had an ally in this Fallen stranger, maybe just maybe, this world stood a chance.

Sacral Morphology of Prehensile-tailed Primates in Relation to Biomechanical Loading

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Sacral Morphology of Prehensile-tailed Primates in Relation to Biomechanical Loading
The few available comparative studies of prehensile tail anatomy in primates have established that several features of the caudal vertebrae are associated with adaptation to the increased loading of the tail during prehension. Given that the caudal vertebrae are anchored to the sacrum, it stands to reason that sacral morphology should also covary with tail prehensility. Convergent evolution of prehension in ateline and cebine primates and clear variation in the use of tails among taxa raises questions not only of how sacral morphology differs between prehensile and non-prehensile taxa, but whether different prehensile-tailed taxa evolved the same solutions to the biomechanical demands of prehension. The first step in addressing these problems is to document and measure the anatomical correlates of prehension in the sacrum. A comparative study of primate sacra was completed among the following genera: Alouatta, Ateles, Cacajao, Cebus, Chiropotes, Lagothrix, Macaca, Pithecia, and Saimiri (total n = 103). The genera were split into fully-, semi-, and non-prehensile groups; Alouatta, Ateles, and Lagothrix were categorized as fully-prehensile, Cebus as semi-prehensile, and the remainder as non-prehensile. Linear measurements for 16 anatomical variables were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses returned some degree of significant results. While some measurements were more meaningful than others, morphological differences in relative size and transverse expansion of spinous processes, relative size of features associated with postulated muscle attachment, and relative size of articular surfaces of sacral vertebrae exist among individuals of varying prehensility. Thus, basic anatomical correlates of prehension were identified, and questions of morphological adaptation to prehension can be asked.

Constructing the American Dream

Constructing the American Dream
This dissertation argues that the Armed Services Editions (1942-1947) as an inherently middlebrow project, together with the post-WWII GI bill education and housing benefits, cohered and solidified an enduring fiction of the American Dream as one in which hard work can yield the success and comfort of suburban middle-class life. The middlebrow nature of the American Dream is intimately connected to the concept of military masculinity, a particular conception of gender presentation and formation which was perceived as essential to winning the War. Discussing conceptions of American identity, the middlebrow, and the military masculine together brings us closer to an understanding of the American Dream--and thus, of the fiction of American identity--as innately middlebrow and intimately connected to the fiction of the inherent masculinity of the military, which in its democratizing and homogenizing education is itself a kind of middlebrow institution. I argue that the middlebrow is incredibly dependent on and entangled with print culture, which both dictates and reflects how one ought to act, what one ought to buy, and what one ought to aspire to--and thus the ASEs, as a recreational reading project, both complicated conceptions of the middlebrow as feminine and perpetuated ideas about the American Dream which middlebrow culture ascribes to. The American Dream is a dream of striving and invention, and the middlebrow aesthetic argues that the evolution-of-self that is involved can be bought--can be constructed out of an accumulation of objects, or images, or identities contrived through the purchase of books or commodities. Thus the American Dream and the middlebrow are inextricably linked and mutually constitutive. This discussion necessitates exploration of the literature itself as well as policy, economics, critical gender studies, and memory theory. Although perhaps seemingly disparate pools of data, these areas of information help create a full picture of "Middle(brow) America" as it came to be in the 1950s--a time still shrouded in nostalgia today.

Dairy Consumption and Its Influence on Body Composition

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Dairy Consumption and Its Influence on Body Composition
Regular consumption of dairy is thought to aid in preserving lean body mass while decreasing body fat, however, studies have reported inconsistent results. The overall aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the influence of dairy consumption on body composition, specifically body fat percentage, among college-aged individuals in Mississippi. Total dairy consumption, type of dairy, and the relationship between race and sex were examined in 580 participants aged 18-26 years. Two-tailed correlation tests revealed a nonsignificant relationship between frequency of dairy consumption and body fat percentage among males, (r = .02, p = .68, n = 98) and females, (r = .06, p = .17, n = 469). There was also a nonsignificant interaction among race categories and dairy consumption. Future studies examining college-aged individuals should be performed with a more diverse sample to see if a relationship exists.
