Hello There

Hello There
The effective communication of emotions within audio-visual content, such as film, was one of the most important aspects that needed to be considered when creating such content. Within the field of communication, there was a limited amount of research that existed on the communication of emotions in film. This was a problem as such content is becoming more prevalent in society. Knowing how those emotions were created and developed would allow communication scholars to better understand how to effectively elicit emotions from their own audio-visual content. By examining a well-known series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, scholars could see how different aural and visual elements influenced the emotions found in a narrative. Most communication scholars would accomplish this using media framing theory, yet there are limitations with this theory. Therefore, by bringing integrative framing analysis to help fill the gaps, a more complete analysis of aural and visual frames can be accomplished. Throughout this study, aural and visual frames found within the series were integrated and analyzed together before conducting separate analyses for each kind of frame. In some cases, aural frames held more influence over the emotions being conveyed by a character and in others, visual frames held more influence. There were, however, some cases where the emotions conveyed had the most influence when both aural and visual frames were examined together.

Separating the Art from the Artist
Expectancy violations theory (EVT) addresses the expectations individuals have for the behavior of others and how the violations of these expectations impact communication patterns and relationships. EVT has been applied in mediated contexts to examine how individuals respond to the behavior of celebrities (Cohen, 2010) and characters (Bonus, Matthews, & Wulf, 2019). However, communicator reward valence, an integral part of EVT, has not been specifically examined when applying this interpersonal theory to parasocial relationships. The unique status and contributions of celebrities may impact how violations are evaluated and in turn responded to. The purpose of this study is to further the application of EVT in mediated contexts and propose a potential factor of communicator reward valence specific to relationships with celebrities. Participants (N=231) engaged in an online experiment in which they were randomly assigned to think of a male musical artist that they were either a fan of or felt neutral toward and filled out information about their relationship with this person. At least 48 hours later, they participated in part two of the study and were given a hypothetical scenario regarding the behavior of the celebrity they chose that was more or less severe in nature. They then answered questions about their response to the behavior, their feelings about the perpetrator, and their anticipated future interaction behaviors. As hypothesized, parasocial relationship strength and entertainingness predicted celebrity CRV, as did similarity and attractiveness. CRV, PSR, and entertainingness did not impact violation perceptions consistent with the tenets of EVT. However, violation perceptions did negatively impact future interaction patterns with the celebrity. Implications and future directions for research are discussed.

Empowering the Body
"This dissertation is the first historical examination of the women''s health self-help movement in the late twentieth century. In the late 1960s, feminists across the country started to criticize and resist the constraints of male dominated healthcare controlled by physicians. They began forming self-help groups where they demystified their bodies by conducting their own physical examinations and reading medical literature. Some groups disseminated information by holding self-help presentations and publishing their findings. Others opened feminist health clinics and formed ongoing groups in which women conducted their own gynecological examinations and abortions, monitored their fertility, and performed donor sperm inseminations. Some self-help activists worked to influence mainstream healthcare by training medical students and holding inspections of hospitals and clinics. Women of color and indigenous women adapted self-help techniques to explore how systemic racism and colonialism shaped their mental and physical health and address problems in their communities such as fetal alcohol syndrome. In the 1990s, young women continued to spread information about self-help by creating underground publications called "zines." By participating in the self-help movement, women around the United States created an alternative healthcare system that continues to shape healthcare today."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Effects of Cardiovascular Risks and Acute Exercise on Cognitive and Brain Functioning in Young Adults

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Effects of Cardiovascular Risks and Acute Exercise on Cognitive and Brain Functioning in Young Adults
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is characterized by damage to the vasculature, leading to impaired blood circulation. This damage is related to structural deficits in the brain as well as decreased cognitive performance. Risks for CVD are more common among young adults now than in previous generations of this cohort. While associations between CVD states and cognition are well studied, little is known about how risk factors for CVD may influence cognitive functioning in young populations. Physical activity engagement is one potential method for decreasing CVD risks and improving cognitive performance. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effects of CVD risks and acute exercise on cognitive and neural outcomes in young adults. A sample of 100 young adults aged 18-30 was recruited for this study. Participants underwent a blood draw, an aerobic fitness assessment, and a cognitive battery. A subset was randomly assigned to exercise (n=40) and control (n = 31) groups to examine the effects of a bout of exhaustive exercise on cognitive function. On separate a day, participants (n=17) engaged in a moderate intensity acute exercise with cognitive and functional neuroimaging assessments at baseline and post-exercise. In the first study, cross-sectional analyses revealed that young adults who possessed three or more risks for CVD had significantly inferior performance on cognitive tests requiring incongruent processing compared to their peers with no identified CVD risks. Participants who engaged in a bout of acute exhaustive exercise had increased cognitive performance post exercise compared to resting controls, in the second study. In study three, an acute bout of moderate intensity exercise had no effects on neural activation in the overall sample of participants. However, blood pressure moderated the effects of acute exercise on neural activation such that pre-hypertensive individuals experienced a differential increase in task-related brain activation after exercise in several brain regions. Young adults who possess several CVD risk factors may already be experiencing subtle decrements to their executive functioning, specifically during incongruent tasks. Short bouts of exercise produce cognitive benefits in this population and also increase brain activation during executive functioning tasks in those who have several CVD risks. Findings from these three studies have public health implications as regular engagement in moderate to very vigorous physical activity has cognitive benefits related to the prevention of age-related cognitive impairments.

Closing the Measurement Gap

Closing the Measurement Gap
The goal of this study was to explore factors that may impact the correlation between self-report and observation of two teacher strategies: praise and response to rule violations. Participants were 71 elementary school teachers (100% Female; 98.6% White) who completed a battery of measures and reported on their use of specific classroom management strategies prior to and after a 30-minute observation. Researchers examined the effect of temporal consistency on the association between self-report and observation (Aim 1) and explored whether the relationship between self-report and observation is moderated by four teacher factors: self-efficacy, stress, knowledge of behavioral principles, and observed global classroom competency (Aim 2). For Aim 1, as hypothesized, the association between self-report and observation was significantly stronger in the temporally consistent condition than the temporarily inconsistent condition for rate of total praise, rate of labeled praise, and percent of praise that is labeled. However, for response to rule violations, unexpectedly the association was stronger in the temporarily inconsistent condition. For Aim 2, none of the teacher factors were significant moderators. Limitations and implications are discussed

Fundamental Studies of Melanosis Development in Processed Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus Cygnus)

Fundamental Studies of Melanosis Development in Processed Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus Cygnus)
While more severe heating regimes may result in prevention of melanosis, the associated increase in costs due to increased energy input, longer processing time and possible weight loss, makes increased heating an unattractive option for the westem rock lobster industry. Since it was shown that antibrowning agents are effective in reducing the incidence and severity of melanosis occurrence in western rock lobster, further investigation of their use in lobster processing is required. Alternative cooking methods that produce a faster rate of heat input may also significantly improve the post harvest quality of lobsters by decreasing melanosis rates with shorter cook times. The application of these systems to western rock lobster processing requires investigation. Evaluation of the impact of these alternative processing methods on PPO activity and subsequent melanosis formation would assist the industry to determine the most effective processing method for prevention of melanosis in western rock lobster.

Striking a Balance Between Melanosis and Weight Recovery in Western Rock Lobster (Panulirus Cygnus)
Fundamental studies aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the mechanisms of melanosis in western rock lobster and the impacts of processing on melanosis formation were undertaken to enable the western rock lobster industry to make informed decisions resulting in rationalization and/or formulation of processing protocols. Polyphenoloxidase (PPO) in the hemolymph of the lobster was the major causative factor in melanosis development after heating to 60-̕80d̕uring cooking. Evaluation of the impacts of heating and antibrowning agents on PPO activity was undertaken. The research showed that the internal temperature of lobsters during cooking must reach 90 ̕and maintained for over half an hour to prevent melanosis, but the lobsters suffered weight loss in the process.

Sacral Morphology of Prehensile-tailed Primates in Relation to Biomechanical Loading

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Sacral Morphology of Prehensile-tailed Primates in Relation to Biomechanical Loading
The few available comparative studies of prehensile tail anatomy in primates have established that several features of the caudal vertebrae are associated with adaptation to the increased loading of the tail during prehension. Given that the caudal vertebrae are anchored to the sacrum, it stands to reason that sacral morphology should also covary with tail prehensility. Convergent evolution of prehension in ateline and cebine primates and clear variation in the use of tails among taxa raises questions not only of how sacral morphology differs between prehensile and non-prehensile taxa, but whether different prehensile-tailed taxa evolved the same solutions to the biomechanical demands of prehension. The first step in addressing these problems is to document and measure the anatomical correlates of prehension in the sacrum. A comparative study of primate sacra was completed among the following genera: Alouatta, Ateles, Cacajao, Cebus, Chiropotes, Lagothrix, Macaca, Pithecia, and Saimiri (total n = 103). The genera were split into fully-, semi-, and non-prehensile groups; Alouatta, Ateles, and Lagothrix were categorized as fully-prehensile, Cebus as semi-prehensile, and the remainder as non-prehensile. Linear measurements for 16 anatomical variables were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses returned some degree of significant results. While some measurements were more meaningful than others, morphological differences in relative size and transverse expansion of spinous processes, relative size of features associated with postulated muscle attachment, and relative size of articular surfaces of sacral vertebrae exist among individuals of varying prehensility. Thus, basic anatomical correlates of prehension were identified, and questions of morphological adaptation to prehension can be asked.

Dairy Consumption and Its Influence on Body Composition

Dairy Consumption and Its Influence on Body Composition
Regular consumption of dairy is thought to aid in preserving lean body mass while decreasing body fat, however, studies have reported inconsistent results. The overall aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the influence of dairy consumption on body composition, specifically body fat percentage, among college-aged individuals in Mississippi. Total dairy consumption, type of dairy, and the relationship between race and sex were examined in 580 participants aged 18-26 years. Two-tailed correlation tests revealed a nonsignificant relationship between frequency of dairy consumption and body fat percentage among males, (r = .02, p = .68, n = 98) and females, (r = .06, p = .17, n = 469). There was also a nonsignificant interaction among race categories and dairy consumption. Future studies examining college-aged individuals should be performed with a more diverse sample to see if a relationship exists.

Constructing the American Dream

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Constructing the American Dream
This dissertation argues that the Armed Services Editions (1942-1947) as an inherently middlebrow project, together with the post-WWII GI bill education and housing benefits, cohered and solidified an enduring fiction of the American Dream as one in which hard work can yield the success and comfort of suburban middle-class life. The middlebrow nature of the American Dream is intimately connected to the concept of military masculinity, a particular conception of gender presentation and formation which was perceived as essential to winning the War. Discussing conceptions of American identity, the middlebrow, and the military masculine together brings us closer to an understanding of the American Dream--and thus, of the fiction of American identity--as innately middlebrow and intimately connected to the fiction of the inherent masculinity of the military, which in its democratizing and homogenizing education is itself a kind of middlebrow institution. I argue that the middlebrow is incredibly dependent on and entangled with print culture, which both dictates and reflects how one ought to act, what one ought to buy, and what one ought to aspire to--and thus the ASEs, as a recreational reading project, both complicated conceptions of the middlebrow as feminine and perpetuated ideas about the American Dream which middlebrow culture ascribes to. The American Dream is a dream of striving and invention, and the middlebrow aesthetic argues that the evolution-of-self that is involved can be bought--can be constructed out of an accumulation of objects, or images, or identities contrived through the purchase of books or commodities. Thus the American Dream and the middlebrow are inextricably linked and mutually constitutive. This discussion necessitates exploration of the literature itself as well as policy, economics, critical gender studies, and memory theory. Although perhaps seemingly disparate pools of data, these areas of information help create a full picture of "Middle(brow) America" as it came to be in the 1950s--a time still shrouded in nostalgia today.
