The Red Tornado appears during a meeting of the Justice League of America—intent on killing the members of the team! What has caused the android to attack his fellow heroes?

His remains fished out of Long Island Sound by young Terry Watson (following events in ADVENTURE COMICS vol. 1 #451), Starro slowly regains his former stature and powers. Transported to a Central Park lake by a mind-controlled Terry and his family, the starfish villain has an accidental encounter with Red Tornado and Wonder Woman, which alerts the other JLA heroes to his presence. In the subsequent battle, Starro is able to create dozens of small duplicates of himself that attach themselves to his victims, including Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Red Tornado, Black Canary and Firestorm, putting them under his control. By the time the remaining Justice League members and the U.S. Navy arrive on the scene, the entire island of Manhattan is under StarroÕs mental sway.

The Secret SocietyÕs body switch is uncovered and reversed, thanks to Zatanna.

ÒTHE UNLUCKIEST LEAGUE OF ALL!Ó While the male Leaguers are distracted by a bachelor party for the Atom, Amos Fortune captures Wonder Woman and uses the magical properties of her body to infuse seven random people with superpowers, then sends them to battle the Justice League!

Fans first got to know the spectacular art style of Michael Golden in the 1970s, when his interpretation of Batman and other Gotham City heroes first hit comics. Zatanna contacts the Atom for help when she seems to be losing her magical powers (a gradual development from previous issues), but the affliction appears to be widespread, as other JLA members on individual cases also find themselves bereft of their super-abilities, including the Flash, Black Canary, Elongated Man and the Atom himself. The culprit is the android Amazo, reactivated against his will by the Key, who is stealing the League membersÕ energies for his own use and to cure the Key of his dwarf state (suffered as a side effect of his previous cure in issue #150). With HawkmanÕs aid, the superheroes track down and defeat Amazo, while Zatanna magically cures the Key of his affliction. In the aftermath of the battle, the Atom learns that ZatannaÕs power loss is a separate phenomenon, caused by her overuse of her skills in previous cases, and that her powers are permanently reduced as a result.

In the 25th century Thomas Parker recounts to his son one of the Justice LeagueÕs adventures, in explanation of an exhibit in their honor in the Space Museum. Unknown to the JLA, the demons Abnegazar, Rath and Ghast had caused the mystic Jar, Bell and Wheel used to imprison them to be left behind in the Souvenir Room of the original Secret Sanctuary when the Justice League moved to their satellite headquarters. There, the artifacts were eventually discovered and used to free the demons from their crypts. The evil trio attacked the satellite during a meeting and was repulsed, then battled the heroes a second time at Stonehenge. In this rematch, ZatannaÕs magic proved the key to their defeat by reactivating the imprisonment spell using the Jar, Bell and Wheel.

Something is draining the lifeblood out of the JLA. Can they stop it before it kills them?

Armed with HawkmanÕs repellor-discs, which prevent Starro from taking control of them as he has their fellow members, Batman, Aquaman, the Flash, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Elongated Man and Zatanna mount a counterattack on Starro and his mind-slaves. If they fail, the authorities may be forced to destroy New York to prevent the spread of StarroÕs endlessly replicating duplicates. The problem is solved by two ÒvictimsÓ who escape StarroÕs control. Red Tornado, whose computer mind is not affected as a human brain would be by StarroÕs influence, blacks out the city, leaving Starro without an energy source, and Terry Watson, by hiding in a food freezer, enables Hawkman and Hawkgirl to discover that intense cold can not only free the alien conquerorÕs victims, but also defeat Starro himself. Firestorm and Green Lantern, their minds freed from StarroÕs control, bombard him with ice and freeze him solid, while ZatannaÕs magic chills the air, disposing of the duplicates across the city.
