The Tiger of Mysore: a Story of the War with Tippoo Saib

release date: Oct 09, 2017
The Tiger of Mysore: a Story of the War with Tippoo Saib
"Mr. Henty not only concocts a thrilling tale, he weaves fact and fiction together with so skilful a hand that the reader cannot help acquiring a just and clear view of that fierce and terrible struggle which gave to us our Indian Empire." -Athenaeum. The Tiger of Mysore: A Story of the War with Tippoo Saib (1895) by George Alfred Henty, is a story in which Dick Holland''s father is supposed to be one of the English captives in the hands of that bloodthirsty tyrant, Tippoo Saib, who is known in history as "The Tiger of Mysore ". So Dick, who is a spirited lad, resolves to proceed to India, gain tidings of his father, and help him to escape, if possible. Accordingly he sails for Madras.... George Alfred Henty (1832 - 1902) was a prolific English novelist and war correspondent. He is best known for his historical adventure stories that were popular in the late 19th century. "The Tiger of Mysore" was well regarded at the time of its publication: "This is a very vigorous picture which Mr. Henty has drawn for his readers. . . . The descriptions of the campaigns against Tippoo . . . are, of course, capital reading, and really invaluable. The Tiger of Mylore is an admirable specimen of this kind of historical fiction."-The Spectator "Those who have read any one of Mr. Henty''s tales will be sure to welcome this also, and after reading it will be glad to see more from the same skilled and clever hand." -Asiatic Quarterly Mr. Henty''s well-known stories, illustrative of British wars and British pluck, though perhaps mainly written for the purpose of instructing the young in history through the happy medium of personal narratives, may well be read, as extremely adventurous tales, by older persons; for his facts are accurate, his descriptions graphic, his plots simple yet effective, and his characters well drawn and admirable. If there be a slight overcharge of the heroic in personal adventures, that only adds a more spicy and pleasing flavour to his tales. The present one is quite equal to any of its numerous predecessors, and that, in itself is no little praise. The Tiger of Mysore is the notorious but now almost forgotten tyrant, Tippu Sahib of Seringapatam; the tale turns on his cruel and changeable disposition, constant only in his hatred of the British; and the thrilling interest of the reader in a pathetic, beautiful and well told story is fully maintained till the very last page. Other works by Henty include: The Boy Knight A Tale of the Crusades The Cat of Bubastes A Tale of Ancient Egypt Wulf the Saxon In the Reign of Terror Under Drake''s Flag A Tale of the Spanish Main In Freedom''s Cause The Young Carthaginian Beric the Briton For the Temple A Tale of the Fall of Jerusalem A Tale of the Western Plains The Cat of Bubastes With Lee in Virginia True to the Old Flag Maori and Settler A Story of The New Zealand War The Treasure of the Incas The Lion of the North Through Russian Snows Under Drake''s Flag Among Malay Pirates With Clive in India Or, The Beginnings of an Empire By Conduct and Courage When London Burned No Surrender! A Tale of the Rising in La Vendee One of the 28th A Tale of Waterloo By Right of Conquest: Or, With Cortez In Mexico The Lion of St. Mark With Wolfe in Canada The Cornet of Horse A Tale of Marlborough''s Wars St.Bartholomew''s Eve Jack Archer Bonnie Prince Charlie Through the Fray A Tale of the Luddite Riots The Young Carthaginian The Dash for Khartoum Won by the Sword
