A standard grading system is used to evaluate the properties and expected performance of an asphalt binder. The most common grading system used in the US today is the performance grading (PG) system. This system prescribes an operational temperature range within which the binder is expected to perform satisfactorily without resulting in rutting, fatigue cracking or thermal cracking as a distress. On the low-temperature and thermal cracking end, this system uses both a metric related to stiffness and rate of relaxation (m-value) to establish a low temperature grade for a given asphalt binder. Although these parameters provide some information on the rate of relaxation and overall rigidity of the asphalt binder they don’t include an evaluation of the tensile strength of the asphalt binder. The tensile strength of the binder can furnish critical information about its resistance to cracking including thermal cracking. The asphalt industry has become particularly interested in the impact of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and additives such as rejuvenators on the behavior and performance of the material. The goal of this study was to evaluate the tensile strength characteristics of asphalt binders and composites in addition to their stiffness characteristics. The study was conducted in three parts: (1) the evaluation of tensile strength of asphalt binders with similar performance grades, (2) the evaluation of tensile strength of asphalt binders as a function of the amount of recycled asphalt binder added to the virgin binder, and (3) the influence of recycled asphalt and rejuvenators on the stiffness and tensile strength of asphalt mortars. In addition to these three objectives, this study also developed simplified methods to prepare and evaluate the tensile strength of asphalt binders and mortars as a material characterization tool to screen or evaluate the efficacy of RAP, rejuvenators, and other additives. Results show that similarly graded binders have a significant variability both in terms of their stiffness and strength and that rejuvenators can be used with RAP to achieve a balance of stiffness and strength.

Solving the energy crisis and putting a halt to climate change is the greatest challenge of this century. In order to solve the energy crisis, harvesting energy from renewable sources needs to be economically and technologically feasible. Renewable energy sources are intermittent, but for our society to keep functioning uninterrupted access to electricity is a must. For this uninterrupted access, electrochemical energy storage (EES) is needed to provide energy when the renewable source is not available. Among EES, batteries and electrochemical capacitors (ECs) have shown the most promise, providing higher energy and power densities than other EES. In this publication conducting polymers as electrode materials are demonstrated to have improved performance over commercially available electrodes for EES applications. Conducting polymers are proven to be both electrocatalysts towards the redox reactions of organosulfur compounds and high gravimetric capacity electrode materials. Studies of the origin of the electrocatalytic effect yielded poly-3,4ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) as the best electrocatalyst. The idea of incorporating small redox active substituents (RAS) is proven effective and the understanding of the electropolymeriation reaction of RAS-CP is achieved. A RAS-CP that had practical capacities of 80 mAh/g was designed; this capacity was higher than any other CP reported in the literature to date. Finally, the post-polymerization reaction was proven effective for the synthesis of RAS-CPs yielding polymers with enhanced capacity retention.

Quantifying the reduced emissions due to renewable power integration and providing increasingly accurate emissions analysis has become more important for policy makers in the age of renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and emerging carbon markets. This study focuses on the method of quantifying the reduced CO2, NOx, and SO2 emissions due to renewable penetration on the electric power grid. A simplified model is used which calculates avoided emissions from the marginal generators that are displaced if generation from a renewable source were to come online. Analyzing the reduced greenhouse gas emissions from these load shape following generators provides a more telling story of the benefits of time varying nature of renewable power sources. This study gives an updated picture and retrospective analysis into 3 major regions of the US electric grid and a look into the emission savings possibilities brought on by renewable generation using a windmill feasibility study as an example.

Small and very small slaughterhouses generally spray lactic acid for carcass decontamination utilizing a hand held sprayer. Even though this tool represents a very small investment, it may present important disadvantages such as uneven delivery of the spray over the carcass surface. If the decontamination treatment is not applied properly, the untreated areas of the carcass will still have high bacterial loads present and could be a source for recontamination of the areas that have been treated. A sanitizer spraying system (sanitizing halo system) was designed and assembled. The sanitizing halo system was tested at the Rosenthal Meat Science andTechnology Center, Texas A & M University. Thirteen carcasses were split in halves. Thirteen halves were sampled and used as control after knife trimming and water wash; then they were sprayed with 2% L-Lactic at 55°C with the sanitizing halo system. The other 13 halves were sprayed by the RMSTC employees utilizing a hand held sprayer. Counts of aerobic and mesophilic bacteria obtained from carcasses sprayed with the sanitizing halo system and the hand held sprayer were both significantly lower than the control counts. In addition, coliforms counts were below the detectable limit for the sanitizing halo system and the hand held sprayer. After testing, the sanitizing halo system was installed at two small commercial slaughter plants processing beef and pork carcasses. At each slaughter plant, 24 carcass halves were treated with 2% L-Lactic at 55°C using the sanitizing halo system, and the other 24 halves were used as control. Mesophilic bacteria populations were reduced in beef and pork carcasses by 2.9 and 1.9 log cycles, respectively, after the lactic acid treatment. Also E. coli counts were significantly lower in the three regions sampled after application of the 2% L-Lactic acid with the sanitizing halo system. From the data collected during this study, we recommend the sanitizing halo system as a tool to reduce the bacterial loads on the surface of beef and pork carcasses. The use of this system should help small and very small slaughterhouses to improvefood safety performance while providing cost-efficiency, simplicity, and convenience.
