The People, No

release date: Jul 14, 2020
The People, No
A “brilliantly written, eye-opening” look at how elites distort the meaning of populism by the bestselling author of What’s the Matter with Kansas? (The Washington Post). Rarely does a work of history contain startling implications for the present, but in The People, No, New York Times-bestselling author Thomas Frank pulls off that explosive effect by showing us that everything we think we know about populism is wrong. Today “populism” is seen as a frightening thing, a term pundits use to describe the racist philosophy of Donald Trump and European extremists. But this is a mistake. The real story of populism is an account of enlightenment and liberation; it is the story of American democracy itself, of its ever-widening promise of a decent life for all. Taking us from the tumultuous 1890s, when the radical left-wing Populist Party—the biggest mass movement in American history—fought Gilded Age plutocrats to the reformers’ great triumphs under Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, Frank reminds us how much we owe to the populist ethos. Frank also shows that elitist groups have reliably detested populism, lashing out at working-class concerns. The anti-populist vituperations by the Washington centrists of today are only the latest expression. Frank pummels the elites, revisits the movement’s provocative politics, and declares true populism to be the language of promise and optimism. This is a ringing affirmation of a movement that, Frank shows us, is not the problem of our times, but the solution for what ails us. “Frank describes an indigenous radical tradition that descends from Jefferson and Paine and stretches forward to Franklin Roosevelt and Martin Luther King Jr. . . . Compelling.” ―The New York Times Book Review “Tom Frank does what few writers today are capable of doing―he criticizes his own side.” ―The Wall Street Journal “Readers come away knowing that at its heart, populism means just one thing: This land was made for you and me.” ―The Washington Post

Listen, Liberal

release date: Mar 15, 2016
Listen, Liberal
From the bestselling author of What''s the Matter With Kansas, a scathing look at the standard-bearers of liberal politics -- a book that asks: what''s the matter with Democrats? It is a widespread belief among liberals that if only Democrats can continue to dominate national elections, if only those awful Republicans are beaten into submission, the country will be on the right course. But this is to fundamentally misunderstand the modern Democratic Party. Drawing on years of research and first-hand reporting, Frank points out that the Democrats have done little to advance traditional liberal goals: expanding opportunity, fighting for social justice, and ensuring that workers get a fair deal. Indeed, they have scarcely dented the free-market consensus at all. This is not for lack of opportunity: Democrats have occupied the White House for sixteen of the last twenty-four years, and yet the decline of the middle class has only accelerated. Wall Street gets its bailouts, wages keep falling, and the free-trade deals keep coming. With his trademark sardonic wit and lacerating logic, Frank''s Listen, Liberal lays bare the essence of the Democratic Party''s philosophy and how it has changed over the years. A form of corporate and cultural elitism has largely eclipsed the party''s old working-class commitment, he finds. For certain favored groups, this has meant prosperity. But for the nation as a whole, it is a one-way ticket into the abyss of inequality. In this critical election year, Frank recalls the Democrats to their historic goals-the only way to reverse the ever-deepening rift between the rich and the poor in America.

One Market Under God

release date: Feb 10, 2010
One Market Under God
In a book that has been raising hackles far and wide, the social critic Thomas Frank skewers one of the most sacred cows of the go-go ''90s: the idea that the new free-market economy is good for everyone. Frank''s target is "market populism"—the widely held belief that markets are a more democratic form of organization than democratically elected governments. Refuting the idea that billionaire CEOs are looking out for the interests of the little guy, he argues that "the great euphoria of the late nineties was never as much about the return of good times as it was the giddy triumph of one America over another." Frank is a latter-day Mencken, as readers of his journal The Baffler and his book The Conquest of Cool know. With incisive analysis, passionate advocacy, and razor-sharp wit, he asks where we are headed—and whether we''re going to like it when we get there.

Supramolecular Organometallic Chemistry

release date: Nov 21, 2008
Supramolecular Organometallic Chemistry
Supramolecular chemistry has become not only a major field of chemistry, but is also a vivid interface between chemistry, biology, physics, and materials science. Although still a relatively young field, termini such as molecular recognition, host-guest chemistry, or self-assembly are now common knowledge even for chemistry students, and research has already been honored with a Nobel Prize. This first book on supramolecular organometallic chemistry combines two areas in chemistry that are experiencing the fastest developments. It provides a comprehensive review of various organometallic assemblies, arranged according to the types of intermolecular bonding. Details on the synthesis, structures, and properties of these compounds will be a valuable asset to the scientific community. The broad spectrum of assemblies containing main group element, transition metal, or f-element metal and a diverse range of ligands, held together by different bonding interactions make this a fascinating compilation. Illustrated extensively, this book is a very easily accessible, yet wide-ranging source of information.

The Wrecking Crew

release date: Aug 05, 2008
The Wrecking Crew
The New York Times–bestselling author of What’s the Matter with Kansas? shares a “no-holds-barred exegesis on the naked cynicism of conservatism” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). In his previous book, Thomas Frank explained why working America votes for politicians who reserve their favors for the rich. Now, in The Wrecking Crew, Frank examines the blundering and corrupt federal government those politicians have given us. Casting his eyes from the Bush administration’s final months of plunder to the earliest days of the Republican revolution, Frank describes the rise of a ruling coalition dedicated to dismantling government. While deregulating some industries and defunding others, they always turn public policy into a private-sector bidding war. It is no coincidence, Frank argues, that the same politicians who guffaw at the idea of effective government have installed a regime in which incompetence is the rule. Stamped with Thomas Frank’s audacity, analytic brilliance, and wit, The Wrecking Crew is his most revelatory work yet—and his most important.

Global Responsibility - Local Agenda

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Global Responsibility - Local Agenda
In various African countries, governments are forced to accept and/or establish decentral structures in order to facilitate ways in which the poor sections of their population might gain influence on and access to development resources. Yet, there is confusion about the role and functioning of such decentral structures as well as about sustainable political approaches to the top down transfer of government power in the context of local agendas. The book highlights major aspects of the legitimacy of local power as presented by modern self-government structures as well as traditional communal authorities. Although the main focus is placed on Southern Africa (Namibia, South Africa, Botswana), examples from other regions (Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo) are also put into perspective. Contributors: B. Benzing, Th. Gatter, G. Hilliges, M. O. Hinz, H. Kammerer-Grothaus, B. Katjaerua, E. Okupa, N. Olivier, B. Oomen, H. Patemann, D. Quintern, D. Schefold, G. Stuby, G. Tötemeyer, Ö. release date: Jan 01, 2000
Incipitarium Ovidianum
Scholars have recently recognized the importance of the medieval and renaissance school tradition on classical authors for our understanding of literary theory and reading practices from the late antique period to 1600. Yet much of the primary evidence, necessary to such an investigation lies hidden in the manuscript repositories of Europe and North America. The Incipitarium Ovidianum will serve as a finding guide for scholars interested in the medieval and renaissance tradition of accessus, biographies, commentaries and Summae memoriales on the poetic corpus of Ovid. The Incipitarium lists alphabetically by their opening words all of the extant texts related to the study of Ovid from 400 to 1600. All known manuscript witnesses to the text as well as the early incunabula, modern printed editions and studies are provided. An appendix lists manuscripts which transmit glosses to the individual works. And a comprehensive bibliography of modern studies related to the study of Ovid in the Middle Ages is included in the introduction to the Incipitarium itself. The Incipitarium surveys 483 texts in manuscript and/or printed form and will be an essential research tool for all scholars working in the field of the classical tradition.

The Conquest of Cool

release date: Oct 21, 1998
The Conquest of Cool
While the youth counterculture remains the most evocative and best-remembered symbol of the cultural ferment of the 1960s, the revolution that shook American business during those boom years has gone largely unremarked. In this fascinating and revealing study, Thomas Frank shows how the youthful revolutionaries were joined—and even anticipated —by such unlikely allies as the advertising industry and the men''s clothing business. "[Thomas Frank is] perhaps the most provocative young cultural critic of the moment."—Gerald Marzorati, New York Times Book Review "An indispensable survival guide for any modern consumer."—Publishers Weekly, starred review "Frank makes an ironclad case not only that the advertising industry cunningly turned the countercultural rhetoric of revolution into a rallying cry to buy more stuff, but that the process itself actually predated any actual counterculture to exploit."—Geoff Pevere, Toronto Globe and Mail "The Conquest of Cool helps us understand why, throughout the last third of the twentieth century, Americans have increasingly confused gentility with conformity, irony with protest, and an extended middle finger with a populist manifesto. . . . His voice is an exciting addition to the soporific public discourse of the late twentieth century."—T. J. Jackson Lears, In These Times "An invaluable argument for anyone who has ever scoffed at hand-me-down counterculture from the ''60s. A spirited and exhaustive analysis of the era''s advertising."—Brad Wieners, Wired Magazine "Tom Frank is . . . not only old-fashioned, he''s anti-fashion, with a place in his heart for that ultimate social faux pas, leftist politics."—Roger Trilling, Details
