Colloquial Rhythms (color)
Vocabulary is a realm within the realm we live in; a combination of endless codes, each combination offers entry into a new dimension and escape from repetition of daily lifestyle. This book contains figurative words, slang, metaphors, entendres, ambiguities, sarcasm, etc., while the viewpoints of many different characters are depicted; portrayed, described and delivered in a volume of poetry that defines brevity: clear and concise; expressing much in few words. No long and overdrawn explanations. Factual information has been formatted for easy reference; nearly each page contains footnotes and text boxes with words, definitions, and reference information. Dialects of English have been incorporated into this volume. Every odd page has been custom-margined for comfort so the reader does not have to wrench the book open to get to the text. All poetry is alphabetized and all poetry titles are listed and page numbered in the index. Much time and effort was put into the layout of the interior. 8.5 x 11 Bright white paper. 360 pages: over 280 poems. Matte finish paperback cover (in color): color interior. All text is plain, simple and easy to read. Most of the poetry is in 16pt. and all footnotes are in 11pt. text. Prepared to appeal to diverse groups of every social class and contains many categories: history, romance, science, comedy, mystery, drama, horror, fiction and non-fiction, adventure, youth and old age, nature (wildlife and botanical names; descriptions and definitions). As much thought went into what to include in this book as what to not include. Within just over two years, I have worked full time as well as weekends and holidays to produce over 300 poems with reference information. I included approximately 284 poems in this volume. Poetry has been an obsession of mine while I race for my goal to become an acoustical artist/guitarist within the realm of the music industry. While I intend to bring these lyrics to life in the future, I welcome other musicians to incorporate them into song. This book is introduced for enjoyment, the simple beauty of friendship, entertainment in general, and for educational purposes. All footnotes and text boxes contain information from a variety of dictionaries and internet sources. Dictionary.com and Wikipedia.com have been most helpful regarding the words and definitions in this book. Definitions from internet sources have been compared to hardcopy desk references and slightly modified or shortened before publishing because the Poetry of the Author is the focal point. Wikipedia.com has proven to be a great resource for reference, provides links for further investigation pertaining to in depth study of a specific word or topic, and provides source information to further reading which may provide leads to other sources of information regarding origin. All poetry is original work of the Author.

Philosophical Disagreement and Skepticism

Philosophical Disagreement and Skepticism
Disagreement is ubiquitous in philosophy. Although this disagreement is sometimes easily explained, other times we find more difficult disagreement arising between epistemic peers. There are a few different ways we can react to peer disagreement in philosophy. Following Hilary Kornblith, I argue that we should suspend judgment in the face of such disagreement. Although I think this is the most rational choice, it eventually leads to an uncomfortable skepticism towards philosophical methods. I conclude that when we examine the reliability of philosophy based on its usual defenses, we find that philosophy is indeed unreliable.

Pubertal Timing and Adult Criminal Behavior

Pubertal Timing and Adult Criminal Behavior
The criminogenic effects of a hostile view of relationships and low levels of self-control are among the most replicated in trait-based criminology. Some researchers in evolutionary anthropology and human development have argued that risky and antisocial behavior can be explained by bodily developments (often measured by pubertal timing) that occur in response to evolutionary pressures. Life history (LH) theory argues that environmental unpredictability and harshness in childhood cause accelerated development, which predicts risky sexual behavior. Researchers in the LH perspective have recently expanded their arguments to suggest that hostility, self-control, and externalizing problems are part of a reproductive strategy. This paper compares hypotheses stemming from LH theory and two traditional theories of crime and evaluates the value added by the LH perspective. Analyses indicate modest evidence for an LH explanation of crime. Other explanations for the relationships between pubertal timing and crime and implications for future research are discussed.

Medium Access Control and Networking Protocols for the Intra-body Network
In order to prove Body Language feasibility, we created an IBNet prototype environment where the protocols were demonstrated on real hardware and in real time. The prototype also offers important insight into the Body Language[alpha]s computational resource requirements. Our results show that Body Language provides all services required by IBNet and it does so with a very modest footprint.

Emergent Patterns of Bronchoconstriction

Emergent Patterns of Bronchoconstriction
Asthma is defined by its intermittence. Periods of normal function are interrupted by intermittent bouts of airflow obstruction, and the severity and frequency of these bouts define the severity of the disease. Asthma also varies in space just as it does in time. Patches of the lung become compromised during an asthma attack, while the rest of the lung continues to function normally. This dissertation explores the intersection of these two modes of variation--what causes bronchoconstriction to occur in patches, and will it cause the same patches to emerge time after time? A seminal modeling study predicted that lung units under smooth muscle stress exhibit a type of emergent behavior; self-organized patches of constriction can arise from the small airways because of the interdependence of airflow through the airway tree. In a sense, airways "communicate" with each other through flow patterns in a way that allows large-scale patterns to emerge. One goal of this dissertation work was to empirically verify the findings of this model. We chose to perform studies in healthy normal subjects to ensure that the patterns of constriction we observed were due to interdependence and not to underlying inflammation or remodeling. The results of our first study (Chapter 2) found that bronchoconstriction--provoked with methacholine--in healthy subjects did indeed occur in a spatially patchy pattern. Further, we found that this patchy pattern was recurrent in challenges weeks to months apart. We showed that, although subjects each had a characteristic pattern of constriction, there was an overall tendency for the dependent lung to constrict when supine. Our second study (Chapter 3) showed that this was due to the interaction between gravitational compression of tissue and the underlying topography of the airway tree structure. Our final study (Chapter 4) showed that healthy subjects did not recover from constriction immediately after albuterol inhalation, even though traditional metrics of lung function indicated that they had. We interpreted this as evidence for the power and utility of functional imaging in detecting and characterizing pathologic function.

An Internship in Environmental Science

An Internship in Environmental Science
The Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) at Miami University has offered a Master of Environmental Science since 1969. I have completed the class work needed for a Masters Degree concentrating in ''Resource Analysis''. The program required a practicum, internship or thesis to complete the degree. As do most IES students, I chose the internship option so that I could gain valuable hands-on experience in environmental consulting. I have always been interested in consulting work because it represented a bridge between environmentalists and developers who often entertain opposite goals. Here I could use my botanical and environmental background to ensure that developers and government entities develop the landscape within the framework of Ohio''s laws. In addition, I could work with engineers at EMH & T, Inc. to minimize the effects of development upon the environment under the current laws. I completed the internship with Evans, Mechwart, Hambleton and Tilton (EMH & T) Inc. in Columbus, Ohio.
