Where Do I Go?

release date: Dec 17, 2017
Where Do I Go?
We all go through seasons of desperation and disappointments. Maybe we go to college with thoughts of making a difference in the world, but then after the first semester we start to wonder if we will even get a job. Perhaps it could be as simple as being married and fulfilling a dream of having a loving family. But then we approach 30 years of age and then 40 years and a season of depression seeps into every thought as reality hits us and now we struggle with what to live for. But then there are others who end up with the dream job or getting married to the prince charming or beauty queen, but then life doesn''t end up the way we had hoped. We struggle to get up for work in the morning. The prince charming or beauty queen turns out to be a beast and we end up having a season of depression and we wonder if dreams are even worth having. I think we all know of someone who is struggling with disappointment. Maybe we have friends who are looking at the road they find themselves and are wonder if they should give up, keep going, or change directions. I imagine there are many self-help books with what they perceive to be the solution. So how does this book stand out? I feel the solution to the problem of disappointment is found in the Bible and specifically how we view God working in our lives. I refer back to my personal experience as I guide the reader through how I overcame, and still gain victory, through my seasons of disappointment. Let''s go on a journey together as we enter into the realm of joy and away from the trap of depression.

Heat Transport and Tracing Within the Hyporheic Zone of a Pool-riffle-pool Sequence

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Heat Transport and Tracing Within the Hyporheic Zone of a Pool-riffle-pool Sequence
Hyporheic water is thought to infiltrate at the head of a riffle which in turn is complemented by upwelling back to the stream at the tail of the riffle in a pool-riffle-pool (PRP) sequence. Heat tracing is a potentially useful method to characterize these hyporheic flow paths and quantify associated fluxes. Temperature was monitored within a PRP sequence for several days. Temperature in the hyporheic zone reflected the diel temperature change in the river but not uniformly. The observed thermal pattern exhibited deeper penetration of thermal oscillations below the head pool and shallower penetration below the tail pool. This pattern is consistent with the conceptual model of hyporheic exchange over a PRP sequence. One-dimensional analytical heat transport models were used at different points below the PRP sequence to estimate distributed vertical fluid fluxes. The calculated fluxes exhibit a trend that follows the expected distribution for a PRP sequence but modified for a losing stream. Deviation of both magnitude and distribution of fluxes from the conceptual ''downwelling-to-upwelling'' model is partly due to the dominantly losing conditions at the study site but the trends are consistent with a losing stream undergoing hyporheic exchange. Violation of the assumptions in the analytical models most likely adds error to flux estimates. For this study, flux estimation methods using a temperature time series amplitude analysis more closely matched field measurements than phase methods.

Bedform Interaction and Preservation

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Bedform Interaction and Preservation
The shape and motion of bedforms are envisioned to arise as a consequence of a hierarchical cascade of interactions that occur within a bedform field. Interactions within the field are driven by conditions external to the bedform field, called boundary conditions. One such boundary condition is transport regime, the annual cycle of sediment transporting winds that drive uneven movement and deformation of bedforms. Paradoxically, uneven bedform movement results in geometric organization, as bedform crests align to wind regime. High resolution mapping of bedform crest movement reveals stochastic crest motion that acts to maintain the geometric organization of the bedform field. Stochastic motion of bedforms is driven by the interaction of bedform topography with sediment transporting flows. One such interaction occurs when oblique bedform crests create a wake containing trailing helical vortices. Each trailing helical vortex may preferentially route sediment to or away from a downstream bedform. This routing causes deformation or ablation of the downstream bedform. Either way, a section of the downstream bedform may deform to an oblique orientation. The oblique section may also trail a helical wake and further propagate stochastic bedform motion downstream. Bedform field boundary conditions provide an external influence on stochastic bedform motion. A numerical model of dynamic bedform topography is fueled by four sets of boundary conditions: a uni-modal and bi-modal wind regime each investigated with and without the restriction of a linear bedform source area. The chosen boundary conditions are demonstrated to influence the shape and stochastic motion of bedforms within the field the rate at which the bedforms grow and mature. Fields of bedforms, driven by boundary conditions may leave a stratigraphic record of their stochastic motion. Given sufficient time, boundary conditions are transient. A numerical experiment is performed to investigate the preservation of signals from both stochastic dune motion and a transient boundary condition, the strengthening and weakening of sediment transport with time. The numerical experiment demonstrates that stochastic dune motion and transient boundary conditions influence the preservation of bedform topography in the resulting stratigraphic record.

Futures Prices as Risk-adjusted Forecasts of Monetary Policy

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Futures Prices as Risk-adjusted Forecasts of Monetary Policy
Many researchers have used federal funds futures rates as measures of financial markets'' expectations of future monetary policy. However, to the extent that federal funds futures reflect risk premia, these measures require some adjustment to account for these premia. In this paper, we document that excess returns on federal funds futures have been positive on average and strongly countercyclical. In particular, excess returns are surprisingly well predicted by macroeconomic indicators such as employment growth and financial business-cycle indicators such as Treasury yield spreads and corporate bond spreads. Excess returns on eurodollar futures display similar patterns. We document that simply ignoring these risk premia has important consequences for the expected future path of monetary policy. We also show that risk premia matter for some futures-based measures of monetary policy surprises used in the literature.
