God Caesar and the Freedom of Religion

release date: Jun 02, 2011
God Caesar and the Freedom of Religion
Summary of God, Caesar and the Freedom of Religion by Elizabeth Warren November 17, 2004This book is a distillation of the current practices of 191 national governments concerning their respect for the Human Right of freedom of religion. Its focus on the relationships between governments and religions reveals the relative political power of both. Religions are vital to societies. They give people a way to express their responses to the divine impulse. They form the basis for social order and morality. Since 1948 when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved by the United Nations, a majority of the nations of the world have approved it. The question presented by this book is, how well do the nations respect the right in practice? While a majority of the governments do respect the freedom of religion, some restrict the right of people to practice their religion through laws and administrative practices. Moreover, there are times when inter-religious rivalries get in the way of free expression of religion and lead to conflicts. Sometimes a benign religion comes to be used by militants who badly distort its message. Some religions become seekers after power, either with respect to each other or with respect to their governments. In at least one case, religion and government are one. The book is different from others that discuss freedom of religion in that it classifies 191 countries according to their governments'' respect for freedom of religion in practice, using U. S. State Department reports and other sources. The focus of the book is political, not theological.

Jonathan Wright Plummer

Jonathan Wright Plummer
The book about Jonathan Plummer comes out of my association with the Religious Society of Friends. This group attracted me because of their practice of silent group worship and a simple lifestyle. In this time of great national stress, the Quaker devotion to peace and their quiet service to mankind satisfies my sense that theirs is an appropriate response to the needs of our times. Jonathan Plummer was praised as one of the pioneers of the renaissance of the Society of Friends at the end of the 19th Century. He urged people to act on their faith, a venerated Quaker principle. He brought together seven Yearly Meetings from Illinois to New York and Philadelphia to devise ways to carry out Quaker testimonies. These included urging peaceful relations among men, giving aid and strength to those in prison, and helping working women, children and those needing education. The long-established Quaker opposition to the death penalty for convicted criminals was also on the agenda of the organization he founded, the Friends'' Union for Philanthropic Labor. The Union evolved into the Friends General Conference whose work continues today. Jonathan Plummer is an example of 19th Century Quaker devotion and service to his fellow man at a time of great social change in America.

Travel Memories

Travel Memories
The travels recounted here are my experiences and outlook, at the end of the 20th Century. On these particular trips, I took notes and wrote them up when I got home. I have relived these years through the notes and writing of this memoir. It makes me realize how fortunate I have been to visit these countries. On these trips, I felt a continual excitement at what we were seeing and doing, and this was true in spite of physical fatigue. In Greece, I enjoyed our trek up the Acropolis and the view of Athens on that clear and sunny day was beautiful. The Parthenon was graceful even as the workmen were repairing cracks and weathered places in preparation for the upcoming summer Olympics. It was stimulating to be on a cruise with Karen Armstrong in Greece. She gave lectures about the monotheistic religions as we visited a number of sacred sites. Cape Town, South Africa, is a resort city for Europeans where history had been made when apartheid no longer governed a primarily black nation. The changes in law and the culture had been made only a few years before the Parliament of the Worlds Religions held its convocation there. Former President Nelson Mandela addressed us. Perhaps the greatest treat for me was the visit to the Soviet Union in 1989 just two months before the Berlin wall came down and the world rejoiced in the televised performance of Beethovens Ninth Symphony conducted by Leonard Bernstein. I enjoyed our visit to Spain and Morocco where we learned from Harvey Cox about the history of convivencia that describes the three monotheist religions as they found ways to live together in Spain. My last trip was with Janet Moore and her tour, Distant Horizons, to Jordan where we learned how educated and capable women live and work in that Muslim country.

Mathematics at the Margins
This book reports the impact a four-year longitudinal study (Representations, Oral Language and Engagement in Mathematics (RoleM)) had on teachers and students from 16 schools in disadvantaged contexts. It offers theories with regard to the interplay between teaching and learning mathematics as teachers and students in these contexts implement a mathematics program. The data are longitudinal, drawn from 154 teachers and their students (up to 1738 students) from the first four years of school (Foundation to Year 3). To ascertain the effectiveness of the RoleM Professional Learning model, teachers were interviewed three times a year and pre and post-tests were administered to students at the beginning and end of each year. Students’ results indicated that all students’ understanding of mathematics improved significantly, with the ESL students showing the greatest gains. Their results matched the norm-referenced expectations for all Australian students of this age. This book shares the journey of these teachers, Indigenous teacher aides and students. It outlines the dimensions of the research findings that supported teachers to become effective teachers of mathematics and assisted students in becoming successful learners of mathematics. The book also draws on the expertise of researchers from both Canada and New Zealand. They share the similarities and the differences between RoleM findings and their own contexts, in order to draw general conclusions for the effective teaching and learning of mathematics at the margins of society.
