Selling Captain Smith
The 1957 Jamestown Exhibition was held to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the landing at Jamestown. In an attempt to reassert Jamestown''s claim as "Birthplace of the Nation" typical Colonial Revival marketing and aesthetics were widely employed in goods created in conjunction with the Festival - either through literal images or by applying the Jamestown label to generic Colonial Revival style goods. Typical of Colonial Revival goods, the Colonial association these objects were intended to evoke originated more frequently in the advertising of the objects than in the objects themselves. Although historians generally consider the Colonial Revival to have died out during the 1930s, the creation and advertising of goods related to the Festival demonstrates that, rather than dying out, Colonial Revival became a pervasive part of American middle class culture.

Feather Mites Through Genomic and Ecological Lenses

release date: Jan 01, 2024
Feather Mites Through Genomic and Ecological Lenses
Symbionts, or organisms that form close and persistent associations with hosts, are ubiquitous across the tree of life, and symbioses are among the most common interspecific interactions in the natural world. Symbionts play a fundamental ecological and evolutionary role across multiple levels of biological organization - from individuals to ecosystems - and can have strong effects on global biodiversity. However, many aspects of these relationships are poorly understood including symbiont genetic diversity (inter- and intraspecific), host specificity, and the mechanisms underlying their functional nature or any context-dependent patterns. This dissertation uses a model symbiosis between permanent, obligate, ectosymbiotic vane-dwelling feather mites and their avian hosts of the family Parulidae to address these and other related knowledge gaps in symbiology. First, a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of parulid feather mites at the species-level reveals that symbionts can exhibit wide variation in their host specificity despite limitations in dispersal. Second, a population-level genomic analysis of two mite species with contrasting degrees of host specificity rejects the specialist-generalist variation hypothesis and indicates transmission may occur at unexpected periods of the hosts'' annual cycles. These first two studies not only provide insight into the transmission dynamics of feather mites and how mite transmission impacts their evolution at both the species and population levels, but also highlight the application of novel genomic approaches and workflows to investigate microscopic organisms. Third, microbial surveys and resource selection analyses at the infrapopulation-level reveal that mites are selective consumers of feather microbes and exhibit a mutualistic relationship with hosts such that they clean and defend feathers from feather-degrading microbes. Fourth, an experimental manipulation of mite abundance conducted in the field indicates that mites do not impact host survival or body condition at the individual-level, but do rebound to a stable population size, regardless of host specificity. These latter two studies suggest that feather mites exhibit a commensalistic-mutualistic relationship with their hosts and emphasize that ecological and evolutionary context may determine the functional nature of symbiotic relationships. Overall, this dissertation showcases the integration of ecological and genomic data at the individual, population, and species-levels and advances our understanding of host-symbiont ecology and evolution.

Implications of Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Sense of Place
This paper contributes to an understanding of the social implications of using UAS in natural resource areas; specifically, the ways in which these tools impact human constructed sense of place. This paper draws on in-depth interviews and document analysis to (a) develop an understanding of place meanings held among Mono Basin stakeholders and (b) define the ways in which increased UAS presence may interact with these visions of place. In short, this research shows that sense of place in this rural area is influential in the way that UAS are received by local stakeholders. The changing nature of place meanings in the Mono Basin caused tension for many of the participants in this study. Furthermore, the struggle to shape these dynamic place meanings is cause for conflict both between stakeholders and with the outside world. UAS may be incompatible with place meanings that many in the basin value such as wilderness, solitude, and separation from the global flows of capital. This research indicates that land managers should use thoughtful consideration and take measures to mitigate these negative consequences when introducing UAS as a management tool.

"Nature Hath Given You a Sheath Only"

"Nature Hath Given You a Sheath Only"
This thesis examines female engagement with honor codes in early modern English literature. Through the circa 1605 Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher play "Love''s Cure, or the Martial Maid" I examine the textual understanding of honor, gender, and social power or "custom" through scenes involving swordplay. Lucio and Clara, a brother and sister, have been raised in the garb and encouraged to behave as the gender opposite to their sex to protect them from their family''s enemies. While one of the main components of the play is the return of these siblings to their "proper" gendered social roles, the play is a didactic tool that the playwrights use to criticize early modern honor codes that privilege personal integrity and violence over Christian charity or law. Through contemporary textual sources, including fencing manuals, pamphlet literature, and additional plays, this thesis examines Love''s Cure as a way to understand early modern English attitudes about honor. I examine the concept of gender through three scenes of swordplay in three separate chapters. In chapter one I study the reputation of the female protagonist and her engagement with swordplay. Chapter one also examines gender issues and how they are portrayed through crossdressing. In chapter two I investigate the concepts of honor and justice in the text by how they are portrayed in a street brawl. In chapter three I examine the superior honor code portrayed by the women in the play. This honor code is used as didactic tool in a judicial duel scene to teach the men a superior and less bloody code of honor and conduct. While ostensibly the "natural" outcome of the play is a subservient role for women, the reality is much more subversive: the women''s code of honor is clearly superior to that of the male characters.
