My journey encapsulates a three year mystery that began in Edinburgh, Scotland in October 2006 in which I was led by a variety of mysterious historical symbols to learn about the life and challenges of Lady Mary Hay in Cruden Bay, Scotland, who was the 14th Countess of Errol during the years of 1711-1758. Mary Hay was the Senior Great Officer, Royal Office of Scotland and Chief of the King''s Household in Scotland. She succeeded to the title in 1717 when she became Lady Hay and Baroness of Stain, 23rd Chief of the Hays (since 1171) and Mac Garaidh Mhar (a Celtic title). In 1727 she nominated John Duke of Roxburgh, to act as Her Deputy and walk in the procession for the coronation of George II. In 1745 she raised an army of Buchan men who stood for "Bonnie Prince Charlie"-Prince Charles Edward Stuart. She was close to sixty years of age at the time. At this time, Mary was a practicing Episcopalian and as this faith was persecuted by the Hanoverians she fitted out a grain store as a place of worship. This was known in Cruden Bay as `Countess Mary''s Girnal''. It was burnt to the ground in 1746 by English Dragoons. She succeeded her brother, Charles Hay, and was succeeded by grandnephew Lord James Boyd Kilmarnock, the grandson of her late sister Margaret.

She charmed America with her smart, likable, down-to-earth personality as she campaigned for her husband, then vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. She inspired millions as she valiantly fought advanced breast cancer after being diagnosed only days before the 2004 election. She touched hundreds of similarly grieving families when her own son, Wade, died tragically at age sixteen in 1996. Now she shares her experiences in Saving Graces, an incandescent memoir of Edwards’ trials, tragedies, and triumphs, and of how various communities celebrated her joys and lent her steady strength and quiet hope in darker times. Edwards writes about growing up in a military family, where she learned how to make friends easily in dozens of new schools and neighborhoods around the world and came to appreciate the unstinting help and comfort naval families shared. This research used in-depth interviewing with fifteen girls on probation, their parents and their probation officers to explore how these three parties explain the girls'' delinquency; these three groups hold widely divergent definitions of the situation. Although the girls stressed their agency in their explanations, neither their parents nor their probation officers thought them principally culpable for their legal problems. The probation officers tended to blame the girls'' parents for their daughters'' misbehavior. The parents, on the other hand, were aware of our cultural tendency to blame parents for their children''s misdeeds, but overwhelmingly refused responsibility for their daughters'' misdeeds; instead, the parents offered other reasons for their daughters'' misconduct. These parties'' explanations of the girls'' runaway behavior contribute to the long-standing debate over how much of female offending is attributable to volition and how much is due to women''s victimization. The girls sometimes left home to gain independence; other times, they left to avoid volatile home situations. Yet, rather than running away to escape abuse, participants'' narratives revealed that the girls often had a hand in the turmoil and violence in their homes. This study also uncovered how girls and their parents experience juvenile justice including probation and located a constellation of tensions that exists among these parties. Four primary tensions decrease families'' collaboration and ultimately harm the success of girls within the juvenile system: role conflicts, disagreement over solutions, expectations that do no match actual experiences, and system practices that undermine parental authority and parental cooperation.

Regulatory protocols generally recognize that destructive processes are the most effective mechanisms that support natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents. In many cases, these destructive processes will be biological processes and, for chlorinated compounds, will often be reductive processes that occur under anaerobic conditions. The existing EPA guidance (EPA, 1998) provides a list of parameters that provide indirect evidence of reductive dechlorination processes. In an effort to gather direct evidence of these processes, scientists have identified key microorganisms and are currently developing tools to measure the abundance and activity of these organisms in subsurface systems. Drs. Edwards and Luffler are two recognized leaders in this field. The research described herein continues their development efforts to provide a suite of tools to enable direct measures of biological processes related to the reductive dechlorination of TCE and PCE. This study investigated the strengths and weaknesses of the 16S rRNA gene-based approach to characterizing the natural attenuation capabilities in samples. The results suggested that an approach based solely on 16S rRNA may not provide sufficient information to document the natural attenuation capabilities in a system because it does not distinguish between strains of organisms that have different biodegradation capabilities. The results of the investigations provided evidence that tools focusing on relevant enzymes for functionally desired characteristics may be useful adjuncts to the 16SrRNA methods.

This thesis examines the place of metaphor in biomedical knowledge about two major public health problems: cancer and coronary heart disease (CHD). Specifically, it considers why cancer is constituted by biomedicine in obviously metaphorical concepts that are also highly pejorative. Conversely, the metaphorical dimension of the biomedical knowledge concerning CHD is less obvious and less negative in its connotations. This thesis posits that the difference in linguistic styles associated with cancer and CHD can be accounted for by whether knowledge about them confirms or challenges the knowledge and value system of modernity.
