Luffy żegluje przed siebie w poszukiwaniu członków do swej pirackiej załogi. Wraz ze swym pierwszym kamratem, "łowcą piratów" Zoro, postanawia wyruszyć ku Grand Line. Wkrótce jednak zostają wplątani w konflikt pomiędzy okradającą piratów złodziejką Nami, a piracką załogą kapitana Buggy’ego. Gdy Luffy do-wiaduje się, że Nami posiada niesamowitą wiedzę na temat nawigacji oraz o tym, że w posiadaniu Buggy’ego znajduje się dokładna mapa Grand Line, postanawia stanąć do walki z piratami! Wraz z Zoro pokonują ich pierwszego oraz drugiego oficera, by wreszcie stanąć oko w oko z Buggym. Sęk w tym, że kapitan włada mocami jednego z diabelskich owoców... A jakby tego było mało, okazuje się znajomym Shanksa!
