Fifty Shades of Schwarz

release date: May 01, 2013
Fifty Shades of Schwarz
Fifty Shades of Grey is hilariously sent-up by an exciting new indie author, Ed Harris, in Fifty Shades of Schwarz. Ana Steele, move over and make way for Maya Stein, a sexy 29-year old Brandeis graduate living in trendy Brooklyn and working in Manhattan for an Internet marketing firm. While Ana of that other series - which has sold a mere 65 million copies - may be a virgin who never owned a computer, Maya is a confident, experienced young woman with several notches on her belt and who spends most of her day surfing the web. As the book opens, Maya is dating Jeremy Goldberg, a part-time waiter and yoga teacher who is pursuing an online graduate degree in education and trying to develop a screenplay. Maya is ambivalent about her feelings for Jeremy. She insists that they be allowed to date other people and refuses to change her Facebook status to "in a relationship." A chance encounter on JDate leads Maya to Aaron Schwarz, a brooding, intense commercial real estate broker with unusual tastes in the bedroom as a result of a troubled upbringing. Meanwhile, Maya''s mom, Dottie Stein, is trying to fix Maya up with a single young rabbi, David Teitelbaum. And, more than ten years later, Maya still wonders wistfully if she should have gone to senior prom with Adam Goldman, who is about to graduate from Harvard Medical School. How might her life be different today as a doctor''s wife if she hadn''t turned him down because of his teenage acne? Fifty Shades of Schwarz is laugh-out-loud funny, while also a moving story of trying to find love and romance in a modern, hookup culture. Readers will identify with Maya and the other richly drawn characters, and be entertained by a humorous and fast-paced story. Find out why Stanford grad and former contestant on the TV show The Bachelor, Britt Billmaier wrote: I so enjoyed Fifty Shades of Schwarz! In particular, I love the situations you''ve created to allow the reader to get to know Maya. I''m incredibly impressed at your understanding of the female psyche. In my opinion, you''ve nailed it.

Mongrel Island

release date: Jul 14, 2011
Mongrel Island
Marie is losing herself in her grey office existence, trapped by endless piles of paperwork and the same people saying the same things every single day. But as she is forced to work later and later into the night, she discovers a deeply strange twilight world where a new possibility for rescuing her sanity is illuminated by the fluorescent office lights. Commissioned by Soho Theatre and written by up-and-coming writer Ed Harris, Mongrel Island explores the mind and memory, offering a perspective of how the workplace can strip away our humanity. Combining madcap, surreal humour with an indictment of the corporate world''s subjugation of individualism, Mongrel Island is a bittersweet, touching and darkly humourous play.

Whitton Brook, Formerly Birket's Brook

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Whitton Brook, Formerly Birket's Brook
This rare union of Twickenham and Isleworth local history will be of interest to those living both sides of the Richmond upon Thames and Hounslow borough divide. It makes for a fascinating story of a modest stream that has served for centuries as the parish and borough boundary, and which survives, in part, despite the indifference of both local authorities and the predations of big business. Its 68 pages are complemented with 50 photos, illustrations and maps in black and white and colour; some never before published. Included is a full-colour pull-out reproduction of Moses Adams'' 1842 survey of Twickenham copyhold Land held in Isleworth parish showing the course of the brook from the site of Whitton Park to Moor Mead with all the modern day landmarks indicated.

The Footballer of Loos

release date: Aug 03, 2009
The Footballer of Loos
The Germans fighting on two fronts were concentrating in the east where the Russians were weakening. In the west, the Allied effort was met with well prepared German defences, and efforts to open a new front on the Gallipoli Peninsula had foundered. Decisive action to break the deadlock on the Western Front saw a mighty attack of six British divisions planned for the autumn of 1915 in the vicinity of the small mining community of Loos en Gohelle where ''The Big Push'' would begin. The bitter recriminations that followed the perceived failure reduced the Battle of Loos to a footnote in the history of the Great War for many decades. Entirely lost in translation has been the Boys'' Own tale of the Tommy who kicked a football ahead of the charge. That soldier was identified as Rifleman Frank Edwards, and through his original research, Ed Harris clearly establishes for the first time that the first great attack by the British army was begun when Edwards kicked a football towards the German lines. Harris sheds light on what it was like to be a part of this crucial battle and questions the largely held view that Loos was a failure, using material sourced from a wide variety of sources form the Imperial War Museum to the National Football Museum.

Effective Federal Tax Rates Under Current Law, 2001 To 2004

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Effective Federal Tax Rates Under Current Law, 2001 To 2004
Examines how effective federal tax rates will change over the coming decade under current law -- that is, if the provisions of tax laws enacted in 2001, 2002, & 2003 phase in, phase out, & ¿sunset¿ as scheduled. Under current law & the assumption that incomes grow at a constant rate, the overall effective federal tax rate drops from 21.5% in 2001 to 19.6% in 2004. It then rises irregularly over the subsequent decade as tax provisions phase in & out. The increases in the effective tax rate between 2005 & 2010 & between 2011 & 2014 occur primarily because rising real incomes move taxpayers into higher tax brackets & the alternative minimum tax affects more taxpayers over time. Charts & tables.

Effective Federal Tax Rates (1979-1997)

release date: Mar 01, 2002
Effective Federal Tax Rates (1979-1997)
Examines effective federal tax rates -- tax liabilities measured as a percentage of income -- over the 1979-1997 period for all households and for quintiles, or fifths, of the income distribution. The analysis uses a comprehensive measure of household income that encompasses not only cash income but also the value of benefits received in kind, such as health care and food stamps. The study provides information on the four major federal taxes: individual and corporate income taxes; social insurance, or payroll, taxes; and excise taxes. It also considers the combination of the four. Illustrated with graphs and tables.

In this peek behind the scenes of the quirkiest corner of the corporation, Harris charts the transition of the complaints department from a cosy cottage industry through to outsourced high-tech Information Centre. As well as tweaking the collective memory of a nation glued to the box, the book should appeal to psychiatrists, psychoanalysts and other students of the human condition. After ten years managing the BBC''s complaints department, Harris includes dozens of real-life examples ranging from the utterly hilarious to the downright dotty.
