Ben & Me

release date: Jun 11, 2024
Ben & Me
New York Times bestselling author Eric Weiner follows in the footsteps of Benjamin Franklin, mining his life for inspiring and practical lessons in a book that’s part biography, part travelogue, part personal prescription. Ben Franklin lingers in our lives and in our imaginations. One of only two non-presidents to appear on US currency, Franklin was a founder, statesman, scientist, inventor, diplomat, publisher, humorist, and philosopher. He believed in the American experiment, but Ben Franklin’s greatest experiment was…Ben Franklin. In that spirit of betterment, Eric Weiner embarks on an ambitious quest to live the way Ben lived. Not a conventional biography, Ben & Me is a guide to living and thinking well, as Ben Franklin did. It is also about curiosity, diligence, and, most of all, the elusive goal of self-improvement. As Weiner follows Franklin from Philadelphia to Paris, Boston to London, he attempts to uncover Ben’s life lessons, large and small. We learn how to improve a relationship with someone by inducing them to do a favor for you—a psychological phenomenon now known as The Ben Franklin Effect. We learn about the printing press (the Internet of its day), early medicine, diplomatic intrigue and, of course, electricity. And we learn about ethics, persuasion, humor, regret, appetite, and so much more. At a time when history is either neglected or contested, Weiner argues we have much to learn from the past and that we’d all be better off if we acted and thought a bit more like Ben did, even if he didn’t always live up to his own high ideals. Engaging, smart, moving, quirky, Ben & Me distills the essence of Franklin’s ideas into grounded, practical wisdom for all of us.

Socrate Express

release date: Jan 11, 2023
Socrate Express

The Socrates Express
The New York Times bestselling author of The Geography of Bliss embarks on a rollicking intellectual journey, following in the footsteps of history’s greatest thinkers and showing us how each—from Epicurus to Gandhi, Thoreau to Beauvoir—offers practical and spiritual lessons for today’s unsettled times. We turn to philosophy for the same reasons we travel: to see the world from a difu00adferent perspective, to unearth hidden beauty, and to find new ways of being. We want to learn how to embrace wonder. Face regrets. Sustain hope. Eric Weiner combines his twin passions for philosophy and travel in a globe-trotting pilu00adgrimage that uncovers surprising life lessons from great thinkers around the world, from Rousseau to Nietzsche, Confucius to Simone Weil. Traveling by train (the most thoughtful mode of transport), he journeys thousands of miles, making stops in Athens, Delhi, Wyoming, Coney Island, Frankfurt, and points in between to reconu00adnect with philosophy’s original purpose: teaching us how to lead wiser, more meaningful lives. From Socrates and ancient Athens to Beauvoir and 20th-century Paris, Weiner’s chosen philosophers and places provide important practical and spiritual lessons as we navigate today’s chaotic times. In a “delightful” odyssey that “will take you places intellectually and humorously” (San Francisco Book Review), Weiner invites us to voyage alongside him on his life-changing pursuit of wisdom and discovery as he attempts to find answers to our most vital questions. The Socrates Express is “full of valuable lessons…a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and bubble-gum philosophy approach and gradually pulls them in deeper and deeper” (NPR).

A zsenialitás földrajza

A zsenialitás földrajza
Miért növekszik robbanásszerűen a kreativitás egyes helyeken? Miért képesek a géniuszok olyan jól boldogulni rendetlenség és káosz közepette is? Tényleg séta közben jutnak eszünkbe a legjobb gondolatok? Eric Weiner filozófus utazó, gyógyulófélben lévő elégedetlen, A boldog zarándok – Egy mogorva alak elindul, hogy felfedezze a világ legboldogabb helyeit című bestseller szerzője. Korábban az amerikai közszolgálati rádió, az NPR külföldi tudósítójaként dolgozott, írásai megjelentek a The New York Times, a Slate, a Quartz, a Los Angeles Times, a Foreign Policy, a BBC, az AFAR és a The Best American Travel Writing hasábjain. Still Life... Is Still Life

Still Life... Is Still Life
We are a multitude. All multicellular organisms are collectives. After "we" die much of this life goes on. Photographing months old flowers left over from my daughter''s wedding I began to see powerful dynamic forces that I would have called a "life force" were it not for them being dead. This led me to new speculations about what it meant to "die" and conversely, what it means "to be alive". While the sense of self we identify with may "die" a large part of what constitutes our "life" lives on. The dance changes but a vital dance goes on. The photos have one eye on the classics and another on the contemporary appreciation we are developing for the non-human life that surrounds and sustains us all.

Come nasce?

Daddy's Tattoos

Daddy's Tattoos
This book of graphic poetry is written for children between the ages of 8 - 17. In the same way Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein wrote fun, rhyming, and rhythmic verse for children that could also be serious and mature in its themes and provocations, my poetry encourages readers to think about issues of transformation, imagination, family, bullying, and the environment to name only some of the themes that run through the book. As a professor of education it is my understanding that children have the capacity for critical thought and are emotionally much more mature than many of the adults who are in charge of producing entertainment and educational experiences for children generally believe. If we provide children with the opportunity and the tools to think critically and reflect on their emotional responses to ideas and images, they will rise to the challenge. My poems are intended to be read aloud so that children and their parents can listen to the sounds of the language and think about how the sounds intersect with the meanings of the verse and their corresponding images. In the end, I wrote this book as a celebration of my daughter, but I quickly realized the universal nature of my love for her as a father. Hopefully other parents will find love and joy in sharing these poems with their children.

Man Seeks God

release date: Sep 01, 2011
Man Seeks God
Bestselling author of Geography of Bliss returns with this funny, illuminating chronicle of a globe-spanning spiritual quest to find a faith that fits. When a health scare puts him in the hospital, Eric Weiner-an agnostic by default-finds himself tangling with an unexpected question, posed to him by a well-meaning nurse. "Have you found your God yet?" The thought of it nags him, and prods him-and ultimately launches him on a far-flung journey to do just that. Weiner, a longtime "spiritual voyeur" and inveterate traveler, realizes that while he has been privy to a wide range of religious practices, he''s never seriously considered these concepts in his own life. Face to face with his own mortality, and spurred on by the question of what spiritual principles to impart to his young daughter, he decides to correct this omission, undertaking a worldwide exploration of religions and hoping to come, if he can, to a personal understanding of the divine. The journey that results is rich in insight, humor, and heart. Willing to do anything to better understand faith, and to find the god or gods that speak to him, he travels to Nepal, where he meditates with Tibetan lamas and a guy named Wayne. He sojourns to Turkey, where he whirls (not so well, as it turns out) with Sufi dervishes. He heads to China, where he attempts to unblock his chi; to Israel, where he studies Kabbalah, sans Madonna; and to Las Vegas, where he has a close encounter with Raelians (followers of the world''s largest UFO-based religion). At each stop along the way, Weiner tackles our most pressing spiritual questions: Where do we come from? What happens when we die? How should we live our lives? Where do all the missing socks go? With his trademark wit and warmth, he leaves no stone unturned. At a time when more Americans than ever are choosing a new faith, and when spiritual questions loom large in the modern age, Man Seeks God presents a perspective on religion that is sure to delight, inspire, and entertain.
