Catholicism As Musical Discourse

release date: Nov 26, 2024
Catholicism As Musical Discourse
Catholicism as Musical Discourse reveals the important role that French-language sacred songs, written primarily for women, played in the evolution of the Catholic Reform over the long seventeenth century. By singing sacred songs--called cantiques, spiritual or devotional airs--reformers believed that principles of Catholicism would be easier to learn, remember, and affect women''s behavior. This book shows that various interpretations of Catholicism were not only transformed over time but also how and why. Most importantly, it demonstrates that sacred songs became a part of the Catholic Church''s effort to mediate and shape the role of women in French society.

The Territorial Experience

release date: Jul 03, 2014
The Territorial Experience
During the 1920s, the Chicago school of sociology developed an ecological orientation toward the study of the city. At the same time, other Chicago scholars developed the social psychological approach that was to be named symbolic interactionism. Over fifty years later, Gordon Ericksen examines the best of these two schools to present a revisionist human ecology. In The Territorial Experience, he gives us a fresh perspective on human ecology by reconstructing the discipline in a way that genuinely reflects the realities of our territorial life. Ericksen''s symbolic interactionist approach to the spatial world is based on the appreciation of humans as the creative artists they are, as designers and builders of their environment. Exploring the symbolic meanings attached to space and territory, he challenges the orthodox in human ecology by introducing hypotheses and conceptual tools of analysis which link spatial facts to human motivations and meanings. With people living in a habitat which they have largely shaped for themselves—a world of airports, shopping malls, retirement villages, where human spaces convey human messages—Ericksen demands that we examine what we have done with our environment in order to survive and prosper. This major contribution to human ecology will be of importance to specialists and lay readers in the fields of sociology, social psychology, geography, city and regional planning, urban affairs, and economics. Showing how humankind speaks in and through its physical setting, The Territorial Experience is a bench mark in communications theory.

Album of Dated Latin Inscriptions, Part II, Text
The second installment of the Album of Dated Latin Inscriptions from Rome and the Neighborhood offers a rich continuation of epigraphical and palaeographical study, covering the period from A.D. 100 to 199. Building on the foundation laid in Part I, this volume intensifies the focus by presenting 102 meticulously selected texts, drawn from 179 inscriptions for which squeezes were made. The inscriptions, many from the city of Rome and its surroundings, offer unique insights into the social, political, and cultural life of the second century. Through careful analysis of stonework and lettering, this collection provides an invaluable resource for scholars looking to deepen their understanding of Latin epigraphy, while maintaining a commitment to accuracy and scholarly rigor. In this volume, the authors address critiques of Part I by improving the clarity between texts and annotations, refining the typographical presentation, and enhancing the organization of the plates. This careful attention to feedback ensures a more accessible and user-friendly experience for researchers. Among the highlights of this collection are rare inscriptions published for the first time, such as a previously unknown praetor''s name from the year 121, and additional texts from the Arval Brethren, which pose intriguing questions about the authenticity and chronology of these ancient records. The authors also include several inscriptions of great historical significance, such as the metrical texts and records of important officials from the era, making this volume a critical tool for both seasoned epigraphists and students of Roman history alike. This title is part of UC Press''s Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press''s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. Conversations About Job Performance

release date: Jan 11, 2012
Conversations About Job Performance
Conversations About Job Performance details the Communication-Centered Approach (CCA) to performance appraisal that is focused on its most challenging part—the appraisal interview. For many years, researchers and practitioners have devoted substantial time and effort to develop satisfactory performance appraisal systems that impart useful information to employees about their job performance. Nonetheless, problems continue to arise, principally because managers often find it difficult to provide feedback on performance to their employees. If this sounds familiar to you, you’ll need this book, which details the Communication-Centered Approach (CCA) to performance appraisal that is focused on its most challenging part—the appraisal interview. The CCA described by authors Gordon and Miller is important because, despite the continuing evolution of performance appraisal, a conversation about the employee’s performance is still a very important component of the latest systems. Also, focusing on communication offers a valuable perspective on all aspects of performance appraisal: the definition of performance and its various facets, how performance information is given and perceived, and the interactional context that affects the meaning of feedback. Thoughtful insight and communication literature that is the basis for each of these ideas is included, as well as illustrations on how the conceptual foundation may be translated into practice.

A Precarious Happiness

release date: Jan 02, 2024
A Precarious Happiness
A strikingly original account of Theodor Adorno’s work as a critique animated by happiness. "Gordon’s confidently gripping and persistently subtle interpretation brings a new tone to the debate about Adorno’s negativism."—Jürgen Habermas Theodor Adorno is often portrayed as a totalizing negativist, a scowling contrarian who looked upon modern society with despair. Peter E. Gordon thinks we have this wrong: if Adorno is uncompromising in his critique, it is because he sees in modernity an unfulfilled possibility of human flourishing. In a damaged world, Gordon argues, all happiness is likewise damaged but not wholly absent. Through a comprehensive rereading of Adorno’s work, A Precarious Happiness recovers Adorno’s commitment to traces of happiness—fragments of the good amid the bad. Ultimately, Gordon argues that social criticism, while exposing falsehoods, must also cast a vision for an unrealized better world.

MIG-23/27 Flogger

release date: Jan 01, 2005
MIG-23/27 Flogger
The latest title in the renouned Aerofax series is a detailed history of the development and operation of the Soviet interceptor, the MiG23/27, code named in the west, Flogger. In the era of the Cold War, the military planners on both sides of the Iron Curtain were very aware of the threat to their security both from bombers which could carry nuclear weapons and from spyplanes. Thus it was deemed essential to have fast fighter aircraft which could intercept and destroy such incoming threats. The MiG-23 was developed to succeed the MiG-21 as the standard Soviet interceptor. It was a major advance on the earlier aircraft. Its swing-wing configuration was a generation on from its predecessor. Deliveries began in 1972 and in excess of 3,000 aircraft were built before production ended in 1986. As was the case with many Soviet types, the MiG-23 was widely exported to satellite or friendly countries. The MiG-23 saw service with air forces in the Middle East, the Far East, Cuba and Eastern Europe and a licenced version was built in India. The book also covers the history and operation of the MiG-27, a development of the MiG-23.This was a latical strike aircraft with a completely redesigned forward fuselage which was produced in significant quantities from the late 1970s on wards. Both of these important types will be covered in the usual and well regarded Aerofax style which combines a thoroughly researched narrative with many photographs. This volume in the series will complete the Aerofax coverage of MiG design bureau''s major modern types.

Early Printed Books

release date: Jan 13, 2021
Early Printed Books
Excerpt: "When we speak of the invention of printing, we mean the invention of the art of multiplying books by means of single types capable of being used again and again in different combinations for the printing of different books. Taking the word printing in its widest sense, it means merely the impression of any image; and the art of impressing or stamping words or pictures seems to have been known from the very earliest times. The handles of Greek amphoræ, the bases of Roman lamps and vases, were often impressed with the maker''s name, or other legend, by means of a stamp. This was the basis of the art, and Cicero (De Nat. Deorum, ii. 37) had suggested the combination of single letters into sentences. Quintilian refers to stencil plates as a guide to writing; and stamps with letters cut in relief were in common use amongst the Romans. The need for the invention, however, was not great, and it was never made. The first practical printing, both from blocks and mov[2]able type, was done in China. As early as a.d. 593 the more important texts were printed from engraved wooden plates by the order of the Emperor Wên-ti, and in the eleventh century printing from movable type was introduced by a certain smith named Picheng. The multiplicity of Chinese characters rendered the discovery of movable type of little economical value, and the older system of block printing has found favour even up to the present time. In the same way, Corea and Japan, though both had experimented with movable type, returned to their former custom of block printing."

Divided on D-Day

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Divided on D-Day
"In anticipation of the seventy-fifth anniversary of D-Day comes this fresh perspective on the Normany invasion- the beginning of the end of World War II. The book highlights the conflicting egos, national rivalries, and professional abilities of the principal D-Day commanders who planned and executed the OVERLORD operation and its aftermath. Two historians, one American and one British, show how bad decisions and lack of cooperation lengthened the war, increased casualties, and allowed the later Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. ... Among the questions addressed: What caused the two-month delay for the Allied breakout from the Normandy beachhead? Why did the bulk of the German army escape from the Falaise Pocket? Who stopped Patton''s August 1944 advance intyo Germany? Why did it take so long to open the Port of Antwerp, needed for securing the required supplies for the Allied advance into Germany? The evidence presented ... makes it clear that the problems raised by these questions and many other difficulties could have been avoided if the Allied commanders had been less contentious."--Jacket.

Tulane

release date: Mar 01, 2001
Tulane
Tulane is the story of a southern school striving for national recognition in the post–World War II era of American research universities. Clarence L. Mohr and Joseph E. Gordon pre-sent a candid, in-depth treatment of the 150-year-old New Orleans institution during this transformative period, when it grappled with such pervasive issues as federal and private funding; academic freedom; an enrollment surge set in motion by the GI Bill and sustained by the postwar “baby boom”; the cold war; desegregation; the antiwar, civil rights, and student-power movements; expanding intercollegiate athletics; censorship; the clash between liberal and utilitarian conceptions of higher learning; revision of curricular content; and the role of universities as platforms for social criticism—all of which together profoundly altered the mission of American higher learning. In addition to these external forces, the authors examine the many individuals—administrators, professors, and students—whose responses in both calm and crises shaped the evolution of Tulane’s unique academic, physical, and demographic design. Like its regional peers in the 1950s and 1960s, Tulane faced the challenge of transcending its past without repudiating traditions of lasting value. From a loose confederation of locally oriented undergraduate and professional schools, it developed into a nationally focused research university serving a diverse student body selected through rigorous admissions standards. Its journey over the past half century should remind those who support, study, or teach in American universities that their own institutions during that period have in a very real sense made history as well.

Mil's Heavylift Helicopters

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Mil's Heavylift Helicopters
In the early 1950s a need arose in the Soviet Union for a heavy transport and assault helicopter capable of airlifting cargo weighing up to 6 tons (13,230 lbs) - primarily artillery systems. The chief Soviet "helicopter maker" - OKB-329 headed by Mikhail L. Mil - took on this important task. The prototype of the V-6 (eventually redesignated Mi-6), which first flew in June 1957, was a much larger machine. For the first time not only in the Mil OKB''s practice but also in the world helicopter design practice, the powerplant consisted of two gas turbine engines; another peculiarity was the use of auxiliary wing offloading the main rotor in cruise flight. The Mi-6 provided a major boost to the Soviet Air Force''s capability. In 1959 it served as the basis for the unconventional Mi-10 capable of straddling bulky loads. In 1967, however, Mil truly amazed the world by bringing out the mighty V-12 capable of lifting a 25-ton (55,110-lb) payload. This machine was destined to remain in prototype form; yet in 1977 the OKB achieved a major success with the smaller but more advanced Mi-26, which remains the world''s largest production helicopter and, like the Mi-6, has rendered invaluable service in both civil and military applications. This book covers the development history and design of all the various types in detail and is well illustrated with numerous photos and line drawings.
