OKB Ilyushin

release date: Jan 01, 2004
OKB Ilyushin
Established in 1934, the Ilyushin design bureau is one of the best-known Soviet/Russian aircraft design companies. Over the years, the Ilyushin OKB has developed aircraft for widely varying roles. Its first aircraft to achieve production status, the DB-3 bomber, entered service in 1936. The IL-2 (Shturmovik) armored attack aircraft brought Ilyushin well-earned fame; this aircraft fought with considerable success during World War II. The OKB''s involvement with combat aircraft continued with the experimental IL-22 four-jet counterpart of the English Electric Canberra. However, it was those years that marked the OKB''s transition to transport aircraft from the twin-engined IL-12 of 1945 developed as a ''DC-3 replacement'', followed by many successful aircraft, including the four-turboprop IL-18 airliner (1957), the four-turbofan long-half IL-62 (1961), the IL-76 military/civil freighter (1971) and the first Soviet wide-body airliner, the IL-86 of 1976. The company has also moved into general aviation with the IL-103 four-seater.

Antonov's Turboprop Twins

release date: Jan 01, 2003
Antonov's Turboprop Twins
8= x 11 128 pgs 200 color & b&w photosThe An-24 was designed in the late 1950s as the Soviet counterpart of the Fokker F.27 in both appearance and capabilities. The twin-turboprop An-24 was produced by three Soviet aircraft factories; many remain in operation. The Soviet Air Force needed a modern turboprop tactical transport with paradropping capability. Thus the airliner evolved first into the "quick fix" An-24T and then into the An-26 which introduced a unique sliding cargo ramp developed by Antonov and protected by many international patents. This paved the way for the "hot and high" An-32 and the "big head" An-30, a specialized aerial photography machine.Antonov''s twin-turboprop family has seen civil and military service in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North, Central and South America, making it a best-seller among Soviet commercial designs. This book lists all known operators on a country-by-country basis and is richly illustrated with photos in the liveries of assorted civil and military operators.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19

release date: Jan 01, 2003
Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19
Following naturally on from the MiG-15 and MiG-17 in the series, the MiG-19 ''Farmer'' now receives the full Aerofax treatment. Appearing in the 1950s, the MiG-19 represented a major technological leap for the VVS, as it was one of their first fighters capable of accommodating air-to-air missiles, ground color intercept system and other advances. By the end of the 1950s it had become the standard VVS fighter and was integrated into the inventories of most Warsaw Pact countries and other Soviet allies. It was produced in many thousands in the USSR, Czechoslovakia and China (as the J-6, JJ-6 and X-5 Fantan); a significant number of export customers included Cuba, Egypt, Albania, Vietnam and Pakistan. As usual, Yefim Gordon has come up with a mass of previously unpublished information and photos from original Russian resources. Dimensions: 8-1/2 x 11inches # of color photographs: Approximately 200 black & white and color photos

Tulane

release date: Mar 01, 2001
Tulane
Tulane is the story of a southern school striving for national recognition in the post–World War II era of American research universities. Clarence L. Mohr and Joseph E. Gordon pre-sent a candid, in-depth treatment of the 150-year-old New Orleans institution during this transformative period, when it grappled with such pervasive issues as federal and private funding; academic freedom; an enrollment surge set in motion by the GI Bill and sustained by the postwar “baby boom”; the cold war; desegregation; the antiwar, civil rights, and student-power movements; expanding intercollegiate athletics; censorship; the clash between liberal and utilitarian conceptions of higher learning; revision of curricular content; and the role of universities as platforms for social criticism—all of which together profoundly altered the mission of American higher learning. In addition to these external forces, the authors examine the many individuals—administrators, professors, and students—whose responses in both calm and crises shaped the evolution of Tulane’s unique academic, physical, and demographic design. Like its regional peers in the 1950s and 1960s, Tulane faced the challenge of transcending its past without repudiating traditions of lasting value. From a loose confederation of locally oriented undergraduate and professional schools, it developed into a nationally focused research university serving a diverse student body selected through rigorous admissions standards. Its journey over the past half century should remind those who support, study, or teach in American universities that their own institutions during that period have in a very real sense made history as well.

Closing the Literacy Gap in American Business

release date: Nov 30, 1991
Closing the Literacy Gap in American Business
For the first time, a user-friendly handbook has been written on America''s workplace literacy gap. Work Force Education has become the quintessential human resource issue of the 1990''s. Its impact is now felt by more than 80 million adults, and carries an annual $300 billion price tag in lost employee productivity. This unique book offers readers a complete review of past, present, and future adult literacy programs. It provides essential context on how this training/educational issue suddenly appeared. Also considered are how current programs consistently fail to close an ever-widening workplace education gap. The book does not talk around potential solutions. Instead, it gives practical, real-life case study examples, from successful on-site company programs conducted by the authors. A blueprint is outlined on how to offer Work Force Education for any business large or small. This book will provide insights to senior executives, human resource/training and development managers, or adult educators. They will obtain a clear understanding of how to organize a multi-level, cost-justified Work Force Education program that meets America''s 21st century international productivity requirements.

Centuries of Tutoring

release date: Apr 09, 1990
Centuries of Tutoring
This book examines both the development of tutoring as a form of education and its influence on ''schooling.'' It offers a review of what past educators wrote on their work, the lives of their students, and the wider socio-cultural ramifications during centuries of tutoring. The role of the tutor and the tutor-governess is reviewed as education at home and the corollary use of tutors in the school. The nineteenth century in Europe and America witnessed the widespread use of tutors, and the gradual adoption of mandatory tax-supported public schooling. The study concludes with a brief review of the contemporary uses of tutoring and an analysis of its historical contributions to Western education.

Illustrated Introduction to Latin Epigraphy

Illustrated Introduction to Latin Epigraphy
This is a much-needed textbook for students of epigraphy and an up-to-date reference work for scholars. Central to the work are its photos. Professor Gordon presents 100 Latin inscriptions arranged in chronological order and illustrated by the best available photographs. The inscriptions, which range in date from the sixth century B.C. to A.D. 525, are collated with standard texts and are accompanied by translations and full annotation. They are preceded by an original introduction dealing with important aspects of Latin epigraphy and followed by several appendices on such special topics as Roman numerals. The photographs of these inscriptions reveal the close relationship between Latin inscriptions and our present-day type fonts by way of the humanistic hand of fifteenth-centry European scholars. This book will be of interest not only to students and scholars of epigraphy but to those interested in the history of typography as well.
