Skill Wars

release date: May 23, 2012
Skill Wars
Skill Wars shows how to increase productivity and profits by making investments in human capital development. It addresses the disparity between the available jobs and available workers. By education and training only 20% of all American workers can fit well into our demanding high-tech workplace. How do we train the 80%? Skill Wars defines the race between advanced technology investment and human resources investment and shows managers how to measure that investment. It introduces a Human Capital Scoreboard of seven new business management/measurement tools including a more accurate calculation of ROI (Return on Investment) for employee performance improvement programs. It also provides case studies of how quality training can deliver on more problem-solving/thinking skills. It has a foreword by Joseph Boyett, author of The Guru Guide and Workplace 2000. Skill Wars is a "basic workplace performance primer" that presents complex issues in a simple language and format that will move both business leaders and the American public to give their popular support. There are few viable alternatives. Gordon believes that, "Only at great peril can Americans continue to largely ignore the workplace as an important arena that helps structure learning for life."

Conversations About Job Performance

release date: Jan 11, 2012
Conversations About Job Performance
Conversations About Job Performance details the Communication-Centered Approach (CCA) to performance appraisal that is focused on its most challenging part—the appraisal interview. For many years, researchers and practitioners have devoted substantial time and effort to develop satisfactory performance appraisal systems that impart useful information to employees about their job performance. Nonetheless, problems continue to arise, principally because managers often find it difficult to provide feedback on performance to their employees. If this sounds familiar to you, you’ll need this book, which details the Communication-Centered Approach (CCA) to performance appraisal that is focused on its most challenging part—the appraisal interview. The CCA described by authors Gordon and Miller is important because, despite the continuing evolution of performance appraisal, a conversation about the employee’s performance is still a very important component of the latest systems. Also, focusing on communication offers a valuable perspective on all aspects of performance appraisal: the definition of performance and its various facets, how performance information is given and perceived, and the interactional context that affects the meaning of feedback. Thoughtful insight and communication literature that is the basis for each of these ideas is included, as well as illustrations on how the conceptual foundation may be translated into practice.

Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker
Recognized as one of the best fighters of the 1990s, the Su-27 Flanker is a single-seat supersonic interceptor that is often declared the finest and most successful fighter of the Cold War era. Designed by Sukhoi OKB, the imposing fighter quickly gained popularity and respect from countries all across the globe. Intended to be a direct competitor to the new generation of American fighters such as the F-15, the Su-27 was designed with outstanding range, heavy armament, and high agility. Excellent performance, handling, and serviceability have made the aircraft popular with its pilots and ground personnel alike. Equipped with an analog fly-by-wire control system, a full avionics suite, and up to 10 air-to-air missiles, the Flanker also features a rearward-facing radar between the engines, allowing it to fire at targets behind the aircraft. Outfitted with two Lyul''ka AL-31F turbofans, each 12,500 kgp (27,557 lb st) with afterburning, the Su-27''s high thrust-to-weight ratio and refined aerodynamics allow superb flight characteristics at high angles of attack. Yefim Gordon and Peter Davison are the authors of several books on Soviet aircraft including the Specialty Press titles Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrum and Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-15 Fagot. Over 300 photos illustrate the story of the Su-27. Topics covered include design, development, structural detail, international production, trials, upgrades and generations, comparisons, overseas sales, and much more. This book is a must have for all warbird enthusiasts!

Mikoyan MiG-31

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Mikoyan MiG-31
The MiG-31 Foxhound long-range interceptor flew in prototype form as the Ye-155MP in 1975 and entered production in 1979, with the first regiments becoming operational in 1982. It has also been sold to China, and it remains in service in significant numbers. Yefim Gordon, the doyen of Russian aviation writers, continues to amass an outstanding archive of previously unpublished materials. Though the MiG-31 was covered to some extent in the now out-of- print and sought-after Aerofax on the MiG-25 and -31, this new book will be close to a definitive work on this important aircraft and include an enormous amount of newly released and acquired information and a splendid array of unpublished photographs (including detailed walk-around shots) and drawings. The narrative of course includes detailed discussion of the background to the project, its development, versions, service, weaponry, and comparisons with its contemporaries such as the F-14 Tomcat. The aircraft is a favorite with enthusiasts and modelers, and the extensive coverage, both technical and operational, backed up by high-quality images and drawings, will have wide appeal.

MIG-23/27 Flogger

release date: Jan 01, 2005
MIG-23/27 Flogger
The latest title in the renouned Aerofax series is a detailed history of the development and operation of the Soviet interceptor, the MiG23/27, code named in the west, Flogger. In the era of the Cold War, the military planners on both sides of the Iron Curtain were very aware of the threat to their security both from bombers which could carry nuclear weapons and from spyplanes. Thus it was deemed essential to have fast fighter aircraft which could intercept and destroy such incoming threats. The MiG-23 was developed to succeed the MiG-21 as the standard Soviet interceptor. It was a major advance on the earlier aircraft. Its swing-wing configuration was a generation on from its predecessor. Deliveries began in 1972 and in excess of 3,000 aircraft were built before production ended in 1986. As was the case with many Soviet types, the MiG-23 was widely exported to satellite or friendly countries. The MiG-23 saw service with air forces in the Middle East, the Far East, Cuba and Eastern Europe and a licenced version was built in India. The book also covers the history and operation of the MiG-27, a development of the MiG-23.This was a latical strike aircraft with a completely redesigned forward fuselage which was produced in significant quantities from the late 1970s on wards. Both of these important types will be covered in the usual and well regarded Aerofax style which combines a thoroughly researched narrative with many photographs. This volume in the series will complete the Aerofax coverage of MiG design bureau''s major modern types.

Mil's Heavylift Helicopters

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Mil's Heavylift Helicopters
In the early 1950s a need arose in the Soviet Union for a heavy transport and assault helicopter capable of airlifting cargo weighing up to 6 tons (13,230 lbs) - primarily artillery systems. The chief Soviet "helicopter maker" - OKB-329 headed by Mikhail L. Mil - took on this important task. The prototype of the V-6 (eventually redesignated Mi-6), which first flew in June 1957, was a much larger machine. For the first time not only in the Mil OKB''s practice but also in the world helicopter design practice, the powerplant consisted of two gas turbine engines; another peculiarity was the use of auxiliary wing offloading the main rotor in cruise flight. The Mi-6 provided a major boost to the Soviet Air Force''s capability. In 1959 it served as the basis for the unconventional Mi-10 capable of straddling bulky loads. In 1967, however, Mil truly amazed the world by bringing out the mighty V-12 capable of lifting a 25-ton (55,110-lb) payload. This machine was destined to remain in prototype form; yet in 1977 the OKB achieved a major success with the smaller but more advanced Mi-26, which remains the world''s largest production helicopter and, like the Mi-6, has rendered invaluable service in both civil and military applications. This book covers the development history and design of all the various types in detail and is well illustrated with numerous photos and line drawings.

Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrum

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrum
In the late 1960s the Soviet Union was working on a fourth-generation jet fighter concept. These aircraft would form the backbone of Warsaw Pact air forces in the next decade. The Soviet aerospace industry began considering enhancing combat capabilities with new air-to-air missiles and a sophisticated weapons control system. Thus the MiG-29 was born. High maneuverability, a high thrust-to-weight ratio, a wide speed range, and special short-range missiles are just a few of the MiG-29''s special characteristics. This book extensively covers the concept, variants, upgrades, carrier trials, service, sales, and what the future holds for the MiG-29. Find out how the MiG-29 paved the way for aerodynamic refinements, improved handling, stability, and technological changes that simplified the building process. Learn details on the MiG-29''s engine and controls. Powered by two Klimov NPP (Izotov) RD-33 afterburning turbofans rated at 5,040 kgp (11,111 lb st) at full military power, and armed with an internal gun, short- and medium-range air-to-air missiles, unguided rockets, and free-fall bombs, the MiG-29 is truly a marvel in military aircraft. Authors Yefim Gordon and Peter Davison use over 300 photos to illustrate the story of the MiG-29. Topics covered include design, development, structural detail, international production, trials, comparisons, overseas sales, and much more. This book is a must have for all aircraft enthusiasts!

Tupolev Tu-144

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Tupolev Tu-144
The rapid development of commercial aviation in the 1950s and 1960s, coupled with advancing aircraft technology, led Great Britain and France to pool resources to create the famous supersonic Concorde airliner. As soon as the Soviet government got wind of this program, it tasked the national aircraft industry with an even more ambitious project: the Soviet Union was to create an SST entirely on its own v and ahead of the West; this was a matter of national prestige. Predictably, Andrey N. Tupolev received the assignment to create the airliner that would place the Soviet Union in the lead. At the cost of a tremendous research and development effort, the target was met v designated Tu-144 (and dubbed, rather mockingly, Concordski by the West), the Soviet SST took to the air in December 1968 ahead of its Anglo- French counterpart. This book gives a detailed account of the Tu-144''s design and explains the reasons of its premature withdrawal; it also describes the type''s recent use in a new-generation SST technology research program held jointly with NASA. It is illustrated with numerous previously unreleased photos and line drawings.

Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer
The Fencer, with its distinctive three-position variable-geometry wings, is the Soviet counterpart to the American F-111, though somewhat smaller and lighter, and to a lesser extent the Tornado. Its origins certainly owed a lot to Soviet observation of the American TFX competition and the resulting swing-wing variable-geometry solutions. First flown in 1971, it entered service from 1974 as a replacement for the Yak-28 and remains an important part of the Russian VVS inventory, with severa hundred having been in service. It is able to carry a wide range of air-to-surface missiles and is capale of carrying out precision attacks in hostile airspace at night or during poor weather. Much larger and more capable than previous Soviet aircraft, it combines great penetrative ability with a heavy and varied bomb load, but is such a versatile airframe that it has also been developed in various other versions including tactical bomber, electronic warfare, and reconnaissance. As usual with the Aerofax series, this book includes extensive detail of systems, equipment, weapons, etc., and a plethora of previously unpublished photographs and drawings.

OKB Tupolev

release date: Jan 01, 2005
OKB Tupolev
A History of the Design Bureau and its Aircraft Yefim Gordon & Vladimir Rigmant The origins of the design bureau that was to bear his name can be traced back to the appointment of Andrey Nikolayevich Tupolev as head of the TsAGI''s Aviation Department in 1918. Over the years, nearly 300 projects have evolved within the OKB. Nearly 90 reached the prototype construction stage, with more than 40 types put into series production. In the 1930s, the TB-1 (ANT-4) and TB-3 (ANT-6) bombers, the latter being the world''s first heavy strategic bomber, paved the way for the long line of large multi-engined aircraft both civil and military for which the OKB is justly famed. Wartime production of the SB and Tu-2 plus the remarkable ''reverse engineering'' of the Boeing B-29 that resulted in the Tu-4 led on to the jet Tu-16 and prop Tu-95 bombers. These, in turn were adapted for civil purposes as the Tu-104 and Tu-114 airliners. The supersonic Tu-22 and Tu-22M bombers and the Tu-144 airliner, a move into pilotless aircraft and a host of imaginative but unbuilt projects complete a fascinating work.
