Microbiologic Studies of the Activated Sludge Process for the Recycling of Human Wastes
A study of the metabolic characteristics of the bacteria has been carried out to evaluate the assimilability of common urinary and fecal constituents by the active saprophytes of high-solids activated sludge. The organisms were isolated employing standard bacteriologic techniques. After isolation, the isolates were examined in Warburg studies and in substrate depletion studies. The substrates studied were the common constituents of human feces and urine, and additional materials such as cellulose, and soaps and detergents not easily replaced in remote environments.
