Assessment criteria articulate to students what they are required to do to complete a task successfully or to achieve a particular grade. They signal what students should focus on and hence direct their learning efforts. On the other hand, student work is graded using the established criteria, and so provide certification of students'' levels of achievement to the community at large.Although assessment criteria are widely used in many disciplines, they are not commonly present in the context of undergraduate mathematics. This guide aims to address this gap and support effective mathematics assessment practices in higher education. This guide is designed for novice mathematics lecturers as well as more experienced lecturers who are making the transition to criteria based assessment. This guide features:*the language for describing levels of achievement in various dimensions of mathematics assessment*guidelines to follow when designing assessment criteria*worked examples illustrating the use of assessment criteria in undergraduate mathematics.

Essex Walks

Essex Walks
The Essex landscape gently undulates, with the highest ground to the north and west, near the Herfordshire and Cambridgeshire borders. A variety of routes are selected across the county to give a broad flavour of the county''s landscapes and heritage. On the marshes of Essex there is a genuine feeling of solitude that is hard to find anywhere else in southern England. Colchester, the oldest recorded town in Britain, is featured in one of the walks, and there are routes through Epping and Hatfield forests, which contain some of the finest surviving fragments of England''s medieval forests. The Essex-Suffolk border is Constable Country, and walkers are guided through Dedham Vale, passing Flatford Mill and Willy Lott''s Cottage.

Though It Can't Last

Though It Can't Last
For over a decade beginning in 2010 poet Susan Debora King and photographer Hal Watson engaged in a private, artistic, and creative jam session of sorts. Watson''s stunningly spiritual photographs of our natural world and King''s passionate poems interact and refract off of one another in ways that both challenge and heal at the same time. King''s poems unlock whole new stories, questions, and realms of meaning from Watson''s photographs and make us wonder what keys do we hold within us as well? All of this work is brought forth with an attitude of wonder and awe. Over the course of 23 poems and photographs, we are privy to intimate ruminations and breathtakingly expansive celebrations - and always left with a sense of gratitude for the beauty and wholeness of a world that quietly invites us to contemplation.

Voice and Valence-altering Operations in Falam Chin

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Voice and Valence-altering Operations in Falam Chin
This dissertation describes and analyzes voice and valence-altering operations in Falam Chin, a Tibeto-Burman language of Burma. The data is explained within the framework of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG), which supplies several key concepts particularly useful for generalizing the behavior of the Falam Chin operations. The first is RRG''s system of semantic decomposition, based on Dowty (1979), which is used to formulate each predicate''s underlying logical structure (LS). Second is the concept of macroroles, generalized semantic roles actor and undergoer, which are assigned to the arguments of a predicate according to a hierarchy of LS positions. M-transitivity refers to the number of macroroles assigned to a given predicate (Van Valin & LaPolla 1997; Van Valin 2005). Within this framework, each of the primary voice and valence-altering operations of Falam Chin are shown to be lexical operations which affect the underlying LS and/or macrorole assignment of the base predicate. Causatives and applicatives are valenceraising operations which fuse two LSs by means of a lexical rule, such that their arguments are treated as the arguments of a single predicate. On the other hand, reflexives, reciprocals, and middles assign coreferentiality to two arguments of the base predicate, after which they lower M-transitivity by joining the macroroles of the two coreferential arguments into a single macrorole. Finally, antipassives lower M-transitivity by blocking macrorole assignment to the lower-ranking argument of the base predicate. While Falam Chin displays both dependent-marking and head-marking characteristics, this dissertation argues that it is a fundamentally head-marking language. As is characteristic of head-marking languages, Falam Chin''s NPs are in semantic apposition to its cross-reference pronominals, which are the true core arguments. In light of this, a number of unusual features of Falam Chin''s voice and valence-altering operations are revealed to be natural results of its head-marking makeup. Furthermore, as claimed by Nichols (1986), head-marking languages tend to downplay syntactic distinctions in favor of semantic and pragmatic ones, a characteristic evident in Falam Chin''s preference for lexical operations with semantic and pragmatic functions.
