The Renaissance Battle for Rome

release date: Jan 01, 2024
The Renaissance Battle for Rome
The Renaissance Battle for Rome examines the rhetorical battle fought simultaneously between a wide variety of parties (individuals, groups, authorities) seeking prestige or legitimacy through the legacy of ancient Rome—a battle over the question of whose claims to this legacy were most legitimate. Distinguishing four domains—power, morality, cityscape and literature—in which ancient Rome represented a particularly powerful example, this book traces the contours of this rhetorical battle across Renaissance Europe, based on a broad selection of Humanist Latin Poetry. It shows how humanist poets negotiated different claims on behalf of others and themselves in their work, acting both as "spin doctors" and "new Romans", while also undermining competing claims to this same idealized past. By so doing this book not only offers a new understanding of several aspects of the Renaissance that are usually considered separately, but ultimately allows us to understand Renaissance culture as a constant negotiation between appropriating and contesting the idea and ideal of "Rome."

Sharing the Burden of Stories from the Tutsi Genocide

release date: Apr 23, 2020
Sharing the Burden of Stories from the Tutsi Genocide
This book deals with literary representations of the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda. The focus is a transnational, polyphonic writing project entitled ‘Rwanda: écrire par devoir de mémoire’ (Rwanda: Writing by Duty of Memory), undertaken in 1998 by a group of nine African authors. This work emphasizes the Afropolitan cultural frame in which the texts were conceived and written. Instead of using Western and Eurocentric tropes, this volume looks at a so-called ‘minority trauma’: an African conflict situated in a collectivist society and written about by writers from African origin. This approach enables a more situated study, in which it becomes possible to draw out the local notions of ubuntu, oral testimonies, mourning traditions, healing and storytelling strategies, and the presence of the ‘invisible’. As these texts are written in French and to date not all of them have been translated into English, most academic research has been done in French. This book thus assists in connecting English-speaking readers not only to a set of texts written in French with significant literary and cultural value, but also to francophone trauma studies research.

The Labour Market Myth
In this incisive book, Paul de Beer interrogates the concept of the labour market and its theoretical shortcomings in treating labour as a commodity. Potential for Industrial Energy-Efficiency Improvement in the Long Term

release date: Jun 29, 2013
Potential for Industrial Energy-Efficiency Improvement in the Long Term
This book does not give a prediction of what the efficiency will be of the energy use of industrial processes in the future. However, it does give an exploration of limits to the efficiency of current processes and an indication of what might be achieved if new technologies can be developed. At the Department of Science, Technology and Society of Utrecht University research had been done to the opportunities for improvement of the energy efficiency in the short term since the 1980''s. This had resulted in a comprehensive database on energy efficient measures. This database and a possible application are described in Chapter 3 of this book. The use of the database induced new research themes around efficiency improvement, e.g. concerning barriers for implementation of measures. It was around 1993 that I did a preliminary study to the potential for efficiency improvement in the long term. Historical analysis had shown us that the short term potential stayed constant over the years. It seemed to be replenished by the introduction of new technologies. This lead to the question whether there are limits to the efficiency, taking into account both thermodynamic considerations and ideas on the development and dissemination of new technologies.

Eighteenth Century Gunfounding

Eighteenth Century Gunfounding
"This book, published by a British publisher, was written by authors from the Netherlands and from the United States. It is about drawings made, probably by a Netherlander, to illustrate a period of developing specialist technology in a British institution, the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. The impetus to this period of activity was the importing by the British government of two technologists from the Netherlands, which move carried on an established tradition of employing foreign experts in this field. These technologists, the Verbruggens, under the industrial impetus of the War of the American Revolution, raised the standards of brass gunfounding to new heights. They allied their own proven high standards of workmanship to a greatly increased demand and in the Royal Brass Foundry in the Royal Arsenal--the building illustrated--achieved new levels of efficiency and excellence."--Foreword, page 7.
