The Labour Market Myth
In this incisive book, Paul de Beer interrogates the concept of the labour market and its theoretical shortcomings in treating labour as a commodity. He argues that to offer people a real chance of a satisfactory work life, the idea of the labour market must be replaced with a focus on long-term employment relationships.

The Renaissance Battle for Rome

release date: Jan 01, 2024
The Renaissance Battle for Rome
The Renaissance Battle for Rome examines the rhetorical battle fought simultaneously between a wide variety of parties (individuals, groups, authorities) seeking prestige or legitimacy through the legacy of ancient Rome—a battle over the question of whose claims to this legacy were most legitimate. Distinguishing four domains—power, morality, cityscape and literature—in which ancient Rome represented a particularly powerful example, this book traces the contours of this rhetorical battle across Renaissance Europe, based on a broad selection of Humanist Latin Poetry. It shows how humanist poets negotiated different claims on behalf of others and themselves in their work, acting both as "spin doctors" and "new Romans", while also undermining competing claims to this same idealized past. By so doing this book not only offers a new understanding of several aspects of the Renaissance that are usually considered separately, but ultimately allows us to understand Renaissance culture as a constant negotiation between appropriating and contesting the idea and ideal of "Rome."

The Digital Dilemma

release date: Jun 28, 2022
The Digital Dilemma
Society has recently been challenged by an increasing concern regarding the compulsive and excessive use of digital devices through the abuse of social media, online video gaming, online pornography, cyberbullying and associated risks and harms. This has become even more evident in the recent periods of social isolation during lockdown and following the Covid pandemic, during which the direct effects of digital overexposure were seen, firsthand in every household. Dormant concerns about the digital world and overexposure thereto, were acutely realized and we are now faced with the devastating reality in dealing with the consequences thereof. This book not only addresses these issues in detail, but also explains addiction from a unique perspective, identifying the core root of a wounded identity, the effect thereof on spirit, soul and body and provides guidelines and solutions to these problems. By approaching these issues from a uniquely epistemological, statistical, theological, and spiritual perspective, as well as personal experience, the authors create a holistically driven, objective, and revelatory point of view in how these pressing issues can be successfully addressed and rehabilitated. This book is a must have for every parent, teacher, counselor, family member and any concerned party, directly or indirectly affected by digital addiction. The Digital Dilemma is co-authored by Anke Brand and Eldred de Beer. They are very happily married with three children in their blended family.

Low-Carb Express

release date: Feb 01, 2021
Low-Carb Express
We would all love to eat less carbohydrates and switch to a low-carb diet, but many of us think we just do not have the time. We believe that low-carb cooking and baking are time consuming, because you have to start from scratch, and it involves specialised ingredients which may be expensive or hard to find. Not so, says Vickie de Beer, who believes the problem lies in the fact that we have become afraid of the kitchen and lost the knowhow of basic cooking techniques. The truth is that you can still cook nutritional and flavourful meals without refined carbohydrates even when you are pressed for time. In Low-Carb Express, Vickie shows that with a little planning and better time management, you can cook healthy meals in a cinch that will not only benefit you and your family’s overall health, but might also benefit your budget.

Sharing the Burden of Stories from the Tutsi Genocide

release date: Apr 23, 2020
Sharing the Burden of Stories from the Tutsi Genocide
This book deals with literary representations of the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda. The focus is a transnational, polyphonic writing project entitled ‘Rwanda: écrire par devoir de mémoire’ (Rwanda: Writing by Duty of Memory), undertaken in 1998 by a group of nine African authors. This work emphasizes the Afropolitan cultural frame in which the texts were conceived and written. Instead of using Western and Eurocentric tropes, this volume looks at a so-called ‘minority trauma’: an African conflict situated in a collectivist society and written about by writers from African origin. This approach enables a more situated study, in which it becomes possible to draw out the local notions of ubuntu, oral testimonies, mourning traditions, healing and storytelling strategies, and the presence of the ‘invisible’. As these texts are written in French and to date not all of them have been translated into English, most academic research has been done in French. This book thus assists in connecting English-speaking readers not only to a set of texts written in French with significant literary and cultural value, but also to francophone trauma studies research.

Reality

release date: Sep 24, 2019
Reality
What is reality? Most people in the modern world are ignorant of metaphysical realities, not to mention the prevalence of semantic confusion, and therefore Wynand de Beer aims to counter this ignorance and confusion. He employs numerous insights from classical Greek philosophy and traditional Christian theology in order to discuss the various levels of reality, ranging from the highest (the divine) to the lowest (the material). The author then deals with a range of philosophical and theological themes in the light of the preceding discussion. These include well-being and love, time and eternity, good and evil, truth and knowledge, and the survival of the soul beyond bodily death, which is the only kind of immortality that human beings may attain. A lengthy chapter also deals with the manifestation of higher levels of consciousness in religion, mathematics, and music. In the later chapters of the book, the author subjects salient aspects of the Western sociocultural phenomenon known as "political correctness" to critical scrutiny. In the process, these ideologically driven and media-promoted "isms" are contrasted with both Hellenic and Christian thought, and the penetrating writings of traditionalist and/or anti-modernist thinkers from different parts of the world.

Potential for Industrial Energy-Efficiency Improvement in the Long Term

release date: Jun 29, 2013
Potential for Industrial Energy-Efficiency Improvement in the Long Term
This book does not give a prediction of what the efficiency will be of the energy use of industrial processes in the future. However, it does give an exploration of limits to the efficiency of current processes and an indication of what might be achieved if new technologies can be developed. At the Department of Science, Technology and Society of Utrecht University research had been done to the opportunities for improvement of the energy efficiency in the short term since the 1980''s. This had resulted in a comprehensive database on energy efficient measures. This database and a possible application are described in Chapter 3 of this book. The use of the database induced new research themes around efficiency improvement, e.g. concerning barriers for implementation of measures. It was around 1993 that I did a preliminary study to the potential for efficiency improvement in the long term. Historical analysis had shown us that the short term potential stayed constant over the years. It seemed to be replenished by the introduction of new technologies. This lead to the question whether there are limits to the efficiency, taking into account both thermodynamic considerations and ideas on the development and dissemination of new technologies.

Contemporary Mexican Women Writers

release date: Jun 28, 2010
Contemporary Mexican Women Writers
Mexican women writers moved to the forefront of their country''s literature in the twentieth century. Among those who began publishing in the 1970s and 1980s are Maria Luisa Puga, Silvia Molina, Brianda Domecq, Carmen Boullosa, and Angeles Mastretta. Sharing a range of affinities while maintaining distinctive voices and outlooks, these are the women whom Gabriella de Beer has chosen to profile in Contemporary Mexican Women Writers. De Beer takes a three-part approach to each writer. She opens with an essay that explores the writer''s apprenticeship and discusses her major works. Next, she interviews each writer to learn about her background, writing, and view of herself and others. Finally, de Beer offers selections from the writer''s work that have not been previously published in English translation. Each section concludes with a complete bibliographic listing of the writer''s works and their English translations. These essays, interviews, and selections vividly recreate the experience of being with the writer and sharing her work, hearing her tell about and evaluate herself, and reading the words she has written. The book will be rewarding reading for everyone who enjoys fine writing.
