He argues that the encounter with landscape played an important role in literature of the West, and distinguishes this particular characteristic from the literatures of other American regions. If Aristotle is to be believed, Speculative Philosophy came into being through a dilemma. "His collection contains letters and other materials surrounding the life of five-term U.S. congressman David Wyatt Aiken, who biographers have styled "South Carolina''s Militant Agrarian." Born in 1828 in Winnsboro (Fairfield County, S.C.), Aiken served as a colonel in the Confederate Army and later went on to serve in the S.C. House of Representatives. He was a member of the Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina and served on the executive committee of the National Grange. From 1877 until 1887, he represented South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives. He died in 1887 at his home in Cokesbury, South Carolina. The collection consists in large part of letters to his second wife Virginia Carolina Smith Aiken (1831-1900), as well as a hand-written autobiography and other materials surrounding his life.

Background: Improving patient outcomes is a priority for healthcare organizations and clinicians. Teams and how they function have been viewed as closely related to improved patient outcomes, particularly in the perioperative setting. While significant focus has been given to developing methods to improve teamwork less attention has been given to understanding the characteristics of the team and how these characteristics may contribute to improved patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the team characteristics of experience and familiarity and patient outcomes in the operating room (OR) using logistic regression modeling. The Systems Research Organizing Model (SROM) guided the study. Methods: Using retrospective data from the electronic health record as well as faculty and staff credentialing data, measures were calculated to quantify team experience and team familiarity. These measures were used in a logistic regression model to understand their relationship to the patient outcomes of OR supply cost, OR length of procedure, as well as if the procedure started on time. Results: Logistic Regression modeling did not show any significant relationships for the characteristics of experience or familiarity to the outcomes of OR supply cost, OR length of procedure, as well as if the procedure started on time. This was an expected result due to the fact that the data did not show to fit well for the model. The study objective to explore team proxies proved to be the most interesting work, particularly creating novel methods to quantify familiarity. Conclusions: The results of this study are not conclusive in supporting a relationship between team characteristics and patient outcomes. However, the methods developed to quantify familiarity and team experience characteristics provide groundwork for future research and study of teams. The team characteristics of experience and familiarity need further exploration related to the organizational structures of team composition - which will inform further development of these calculations improving statistical modeling options.
